The High Price of Freedom
Posted by Henrik on 12 September 2001, 17:12 GMT

I doubt that there could be anyone who is not all too aware of the terrible tragedy that occurred yesterday in the United States. We live in a world that is now vastly different from what it was only a day ago.

Our community represents people from across the world. Of all our members, the majority are Americans. Almost certainly, someone amongst our number has lost someone they knew, someone they loved... it is entirely conceivable that a member of our community was among those who died. I do not know. In all likelihood, we will never know. But we do not need to know to show our compassion towards the victims of these terrible acts of terror. Those who died were fellow human beings, and that is enough.

I speak for the entire staff when I say that our thoughts are with you all at this time.

How would everone feel if i made a game where you can get revenge on these terrorists? basically it would be a side-scroller, where there is an airplane trying to crash into a building, and you have to shoot it down. good idea? now what if i had a cheat code where you can be the terrorists? would everyone hate me then?

It is sick to even think of using this tradgedy as a basis for a game. IT ISN'T A GAME! Making a game based on this would lesson the significance of this event...

This is meant only for Americans, but I don't want anyone to take offense.

How many people on here would be ready, willing, and able to enlist in the army to fight against terrorism? I would, even though I do not like the thought of killing anybody of any race, gender, or religion. I would join to make sure that my future children and my children's children would never again have to face this threat. I would, if neccessary, slaughter hundreds of terrorists to make sure that future generations of people would never again have to worry about being attacked by faceless enemies during a time of peace. And may God have mercy on my soul.

You're a tough man.You would kill those terrorist for a better future (a cristian future of course).. But who are these terrorists? They are also men like you, willing to kill others for a better future. the only difference is that they are convinced Muslims and they see what the so called Christians do with them.

i'm gonna have to go with jacob on this one... i think you should be allowed to be selfish for something like this... i think, in order, the priorities for a person's life are
1. HIS/her god
2. HIS/her family
3. HIS/her country
jacob just wants to make sure HIS family has a good future. it just so happens that the terrorists follow this same pattern... which can't be solved with words, they will ALWAYS try to kill christians, the only way to stop it is to get rid of the extremists. (now of course, this will NEVER end, no matter how many countries we screw over, there will ALWAYS be someone who will kill himself just to kill someone else)

I would fight against terrorism so that my children will never have to live in fear of being killed while they're going to work or school. I honestly believe that the US is in the right here. And I know that there are citizens in other countries that think the US is so far in the wrong that it doesn't deserve to come back.

It sure deserves to come back, but not in a way of war. The US should be smarter than the terrorists. If it'll come to war, than it must be the whole world against terrorism, not just the US. I think that is the main problem of the US. It likes to handle things on its own

I guess that you haven't heard. NATO invoked a portion of their thing that I forget what it's called that says that an attack against America is an attack against NATO and all it's members.

"ready, willing, and able to enlist"? I'd be willing to under extreme circumstances (and this situation may well lead to that) - but it seems to me that this war will primarily be fought with intelligence, espionage, and commando units. The terrorists will be trying to avoid military confrontations - and our main objective will be to initiate them.

What scares me the most is that terrorists' main targets will most likely be non-military - you can expect a lot of civilian casualties if war erupts.

The government needs to show that it is able to accomplish anything, so they won't use only commando units for this, if it happens, it'll be a full-out assault.

Here's the problem... We declare war on Afghanistan. Then we fight the country's MILITARY, doing little ta actually bring down the terrorists. By the time we've convinced them to stop or they convince us to stop fighting, the people we're after will already be long gone. So what did we accomplish? Weakening/ruining the militaries of two countries, and not getting what we were aiming for in the first place.

You can't turn this into a fight against another country. You've got to convince everyone else to take care of the terrorists in their own country.

Most likely indeed. That's what I've been trying to tell them, but they seem to remain blind. They'll figure it out sooner or later.

I (an american) can think of many reasons why a lot of the world would hate the US; we have everything-more food, technology, energy, etc. We stick our noses in places where they don't always belong. In general, 1/24 of the world's population uses most of the world's resources. I disapprove of a lot of the things the US does, and has done. Still, I really don't think that 6,000 _innocent_ civilians should have been killed for any cause. By the way, your username seems a bit ironic; you say you _understand_ why we were attacked.

Yes, it doesn't allow to kill 6000 people, but maybe that was the only way for you (Americans) to listen.
