Public apology
Posted on 10 November 1998, 03:36 GMT

Recenly, rumors have surfaced concerning a "hack" of the TI-Files site. However, no one has stood up and taken responsibility for the incident.

Therefore I am coming forward to say that I was a part of the incident. Two former members of the TI-Files gave me their FTP passwords (before the accounts were removed) and I logged into the TI-Files site and deleted the main directory (including the index.html file).

My actions caused chaos in the TI-Files community and reflected poorly on myself and ticalc.org. I deeply regret what I did and it will never happen again.

- Bryan Rabeler

How do we know this isn't a hack....

Re: Re: Public apology

That isn't called hacking, it's called being sneaky. Hacking is when they found out the password themselves with a cracker.

Why???!?! What sort of a reason drives you to do that? Was there a reason behind it?

Actually, if he was Bill Clinton, he'd put pictures of himself and Monica Lew... all over the site. (I kepted the last name incomplete to protect the innocent.)

Hmm, I have it on sources that this message is real. However, I agree with the first poster. :) "Don't do it again" seems sufficient. I think I'm just glad ticalc.org was online all the time, so that /my/ calculator browsing was uninterrupted.

Just my two cents.

Nathan Haines

Well, he didn't exactly hack into the Pentagon or the DOD, he just deleted a hobby website.

I think that if he'd actually cracked into it it would have been rather more malicious... but there are a lot of people who would do the same thing to either site--and would wipe out the whole site, too, instead of merely deleting the root directory.

And what will we do? He apologized, TI-Files didn't lose too much up-time (as I understand it), what do you want?

Questions:
-Why did you do that?

Definition:
Hack=> using technological knowledge with one's effort to get the unauthorized permission to manipulate the electrical machines.

But, you didn't seem to actually "hack" into the system. It was just the abuse of given authority.

Well, go back and read the news item again carefuly.

Bryan said that the incident with TI-Files was /called/ a hack.

Then he said that it wasn't, but that he was involved.

BTW, there are billions of meanings for 'hack,' and none of them have anything to do with gaining unauthorized access (that's called 'cracking').

Remember the good old days when "hacking" meant writing programs? Or does nobody remember? e.g. Kirk is a hacker, Bryan is a cracker --there's a difference, be specific

Now, wait a minute, if you were the one who did it, then why would you expect someone else to take the blame? That sounds quite strange...

He wasn't the only one who was involved. As I heard the facts, Adam Berlinsky-Schine (founder of Dimension-TI) was the one held responsible.

Re: Re: Re: Public apology

Adam simply gave Bryan the pass, he had nothing to do with the deletings.

Why would someone give a password to a major site to it's biggest competitor?

Load of bull
Concerned ti-community citizen

Since you were one of these people who participated in this "hack", why should we believe that you are TRULY sorry and you'll never do it again? I think you're full of it. You people who go around and just delete your competition make me sick.. what are you trying to become; Microsoft?

You can go take your sap appologies somewhere else.. I don't buy it. Who twisted your arm and shoved those words into your mouth? Are you trying to get back on the "good side" of the calculator community because you want something from us now?

I find your comment amusing. How does his level of sincerity affect you in any way? Whether he's apologising because he means it or he's apologising to "get back on the 'good side' of the calculator community" doesn't affect you in any way. Also, all that Bryan does is runs this site, that's all that's expected of him (and even that would be taking him for granted). He's not the President (the parallels in your statement to the current predicament in the US presidency was my main source of amusement). And as for that "something from us now", he's sacrificed a LOT of his time in order to save us all a little. You owe him quite a bit (at least a little, regardless of who you are, but most likely quite a bit). Lastly, your attitude is not welcome here.

Let's not go around slagging Microsoft. They don't try destroying their competition, they just try to push them around and blackmail them.

Since when were YOU perfect. I sure that you have done some mean things in your day, so don't go jumping on brian just because he was the mature one by admiting his mistake. Mabye he could set an example to others.

BAM Software

I don't know about you, but I don't think it matters if Bryan apologizes. He was wrong with what he did, but Adam shouldn't have given him the password. It may have only taken a few minutes to put the site back out, but he should never be forgiven. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
