Vacation Times
Posted by Henrik on 28 June 2002, 22:00 GMT

It is vacation times for the ticalc.org staff. Being based in the northern hemisphere, we will enjoy summer. I know at least some of us will do some extensive travelling around the globe. Due to this, pending files will grow, help mail will be answered with greater delay, and not much new will happen for a month or two.

The ticalc.org staff wishes all our visitors a good summer (or winter if you are below the equator) and hope you all understand we all need some vacation.

Tell us about your own vacation plans below.

Has anyone else been recieving strange emails with attachments that appear to be games? The first I downloaded seemed like a game at first, but ended up being a text file for a TI 83 program, and some weird application. This is what the email said,

"This is a funny game
This game is my first work.
You're the first player.
I hope you would like it."

another said, "This is a special good tool
I wish you would like it."

and yet another said "This is a IE 6.0 patch
I hope you would enjoy it."

I've tried to contact the senders of these emails but I never get a response... is anyone else being sent these strange attachments? I think they may be some sort of virus someone is trying to infect people with,
so be careful when downloading files from unknown senders.

Funny... I get similar e-mail subjects with no attachments, but huge size amounts (150K on some). I think they're viruses, so I delete them. They have attachments like this:
"Hi, no_one_20000, sexy japanese lass' pictures"
"A powerful tool"
"FONT SIZE"
"location.reload("
"Class"
"Look younger, HGH suppliment" (scary)
"The ticalc.org project, All Rights Reserved"
Strage...

Someone had hacked into my computer or something and was sending people viruses using my e-mail address. My friends computer was totally messed up.

They probably infected your computer with a virus, do you have any Anti-Virus Programs?

WTF? I posted a helpful reply and it was deleted.
Nobody has hacked your computer.
The Klez virus sends an e-mail to everyone in your Outlook or Eudora address book, using an e-mail randomly chosen from the book. Apparently, it chose yours.

not always. There are still a few holes in IE/Outlook security that allow the MIME type of an executable file or script to be falsely reported - for example, a page could convince IE that a .VBS or .EXE file is really a .GIF or .XBM file, making it download the executable and processing its code and thereby infecting the computer. You don't *HAVE* to open attachments to get viruses anymore. People have gone beyond that.

Now imagine if a virus was created that looked through your address book to find people you've sent files to recently; parsed the e-mails you sent; found their name/e-mail/name of the file you sent; and sent them a message saying "Hey so-and-so, I forgot to send this with such-and-such a file; I meant to send it earlier." They open the attachment (which seems totally authentic; you could just add the word "addendum" to the end of a filename), and voila, they're infected. Devious, eh?

and yet, nobody has done it... yet...

I HATE that stupid loophole thing in e-mail progs. We have a really old version of Eudora, so I guess it's pretty easy for viruses to fool us. One time, the Klez virus was downloading and our screen went all blue but Norton 2001 saved us.

Congratulations, you now have the CIH virus! Way to run your attachments without scanning them! *doh*

It probably isn't the CIH virus. I get messages like these all the time and scan them. They're just your friendly everyday worms.

Yeah, klez. That's what Norton 2001 said. It was like W32.Klez.gen@mm or something. From what I hear, that one's pretty bad.

I will be in summer school and programming all summer. Check out the group I am part of. (follow site link). I just released a new game today that I made. I also have an assembly project I'm working on. Assembly programming is so much slower. It takes weeks to make an assembly program.

Don't use MSN's free web pages--it's telling the world that you use MSN, which is almost as bad as AOL. I think freeservers is the best free web page host (see link), or you can always buy a domain, which always looks better.

That site is kinda temporary for the moment. I have a site with freewebsites (see link above), but i had some problems for a while. I have 2 computers, one with internet, one with the program to edit webpages. I had trouble using discs, transferring from one to another comp, so i started on the msn site. Now I have Dreamweaver on the comp with internet, and ill be able to work on the freewebsites webpage again. It just might take a lil while to get the freewebsites page updated...

You don't need a program to edit webpages--just use notepad.
