Vacation Times
Posted by Henrik on 28 June 2002, 22:00 GMT

It is vacation times for the ticalc.org staff. Being based in the northern hemisphere, we will enjoy summer. I know at least some of us will do some extensive travelling around the globe. Due to this, pending files will grow, help mail will be answered with greater delay, and not much new will happen for a month or two.

The ticalc.org staff wishes all our visitors a good summer (or winter if you are below the equator) and hope you all understand we all need some vacation.

Tell us about your own vacation plans below.

Another non-informational poll on an on-topic basis (somewhat):

If you were able to trade an 86 for an 89, would you do it?

(Just curious)

Well, I'm home, learning how to program... (i'm 11). Currently I'm learning PHP4, and (my dad is waaaaay against this) ASM. Yep, that's right. After learning it, I hope to work on a game called Virtual Pool (C). Well, hope it works. (I have a TI-83+)

You're 11 and learning ASM? Wow! I didn't start learning it until I was 13. Why is your dad against you learning ASM? My parents don't have a clue about what I program in. lol

I started trying late in sixth grade, but I didn't have a clue (few good tutorials), so I waited another year. My friends parents was against me learning asm because it was such a low-level language. I also have an 83+ (but I use the SE more)

I plan to spend the rest of my vacation fixing my PC.

Apparently, whilst installing a new 60GB hard drive, I seriously f---ed something up. I turned on my computer and it booted up... once... just fine. Left in on a couple days, copying stuff (MP3s, movies) to the new HD.

Now, I rebooted my computer (because it was going slow for some reason) and it says:
"DISK BOOT ERROR - INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

I'm guessing I've somehow managed to delete or corrupt my partition table. Anybody have any ideas on how to:

1. restore a partition table, without losing FAT32 info
2. restore a master boot record, without losing FAT32 info

3. properly install a second FAT32-formatted hard drive (with no OS installed on it) without doing this whole thing over again

it would be INCREDIBLY appreciated if you did...

I don't think you can restore a partition table...You need to run fdisk...fdisk /mbr will fix the master boot record.

Found out that static electricity fried the controller on my HD. Bought a new identical HD and am currently having a local shop swap the controllers (since I can't trust myself to do this...).

hopefully, if all works well, I'll get my data back... about 95% of which is not replaceable...

and yes, you CAN restore a partition table. look for Pierre's Partition Table Field Guide online somewhere; it tells you how.

wish me luck, guys. I might have a nervous breakdown if I can't fix this thing - in all seriousness.
