AMS 2.08 Released
Posted by Eric on 19 August 2002, 07:10 GMT
TI has recently released AMS 2.08 for the TI-89 and the Voyage 200. The new version includes added features such as more trig commands and a novel idea TI is referring to as "clack functionality" (yes, kiddos, I believe that should be "clock"). Anyway, give it a try. On another note, I've decided to officially retire from ticalc.org, due to massive workloads and such. It's been interesting, but three years is about long enough, anyway. We're currently in the process of deciding how to proceed, so please don't flood our mailboxes volunteering your help just yet, thanks. Update (Eric): Ok, it appears that TI has recalled AMS 2.08 due to errors with the Black Graph Link cable and TI-Connect.

How can I use the ClockOn and the ClockOff function?? What about the setmzn() and the setzn()?? Is there any use for them??

I don't know about setzn()... in fact, that's not a function... but settmzn() could be used to run a program that operates based on some specific time parameter... settmzn() sets the time zone as oriented to GMT... for example, Eastern Standard Time is GMT -5:00.
ClockOn and ClockOff turn the clock on and off, presumably to save power and processor cycles... but 4 lines of ASM code per second wouldn't affect either *too* drastically. You have to realize that with something like a calculator, the processors will be relatively slow even if they're overclocked. They're not designed to be fast, after all; just to do lots of simple, and some complex, math problems.
On another note, I came up with an idea... how about a distributed computing project based on TI calculators? we could write a client app that calculated hatever we wanted to, and a computer app that would retrieve the data from the calculator and sent it to a server somewhere... anybody up for thinking of something to compute? I'm sure that we'd have a surprising amount of computing power to spare with all these calculators... as long as the processor isn't busy playing games :-p

I loaded 2.08 on HW2...and it would NOT send ANY ASM programs to my calc...and NO flash software would be sent. BASIC was OK. What's the deal here?

If anybody reads down this far, TI has fixed the "clack functionality" part of that page. Either TI is reading ticalc.org's news posts or it's just an amazing coincidene.

I thought of this today... We are all used to write SMS messages in mobile phones and tipically we write it very fast so why don't develop a program that enables us to write just like in a regular cell phone. Press #1 1 time for a, twice #1 for b and so on and so on... You can even create a dictionary and use auto-complete for the most typed words... I dont know if anyone had this idea before and if I had spare time I would try to make this application. Anyone interested? Why do we need that ascii keyboard that TI is going to release for the 89? For nothing I believe! :)
