TI-Keyboard: Coming Soon?
Posted by Eric on 11 May 2002, 22:25 GMT
Several people have alerted me to an interesting new piece of hardware mentioned on Page 8 of the recent TI-Cares publication- a full-sized QWERTY keyboard that hooks up into your calculator's link port. A couple keyboard projects have been in the works lately by independent developers, but apparently TI has decided to make their own official version. More news to come? Hopefully...

I have a much better picture; click the URL link for this post. I scanned that off the back of the CD case for the TI CD that came with a USB graphlink. Apparently it's not released yet, but the ad indicates it's available.

This will probably turn into something like with the connector cables. There is already a working program for it (check URL: It includes, I believe source for both a mouse and a kbd). TI will probably make an inferior product that costs too much.

I think that TI are wasting their time:
I use the QWERTY Ion program on my calc that allows you to turn the calc on its side and type in that way. I have only been using it about two days and I can type pretty fast (though it is still a lot faster to just stick on the ALock and type using those keys).
TI should make some funkier hardware addons, like external memory modules for my 83+ (For apps, they're too big!)
Even cooler would be an on-calc assembler (like TASM).
You can already write asm in HEX on the thing, so why not create an app or similar that compiles 'English' style assembler (you know, stuff like 'ld a,4' or 'out (bport),a'. It is too slow to keep on having to recompile and send the file accross.
BTW, is it true that VTI only supports TI83Plus ROMs up to version 1.10? My calc came with 1.13, and now runs 1.14. The ROM-dump just gets up to 512K then knackers the calc!
Oh, and I just released my first ASM program- a system info program. click the 'Web Page' link to check it out.
