TI-Keyboard: Coming Soon?
Posted by Eric on 11 May 2002, 22:25 GMT

Several people have alerted me to an interesting new piece of hardware mentioned on Page 8 of the recent TI-Cares publication- a full-sized QWERTY keyboard that hooks up into your calculator's link port. A couple keyboard projects have been in the works lately by independent developers, but apparently TI has decided to make their own official version. More news to come? Hopefully...

1st Comment, finally!
I think I keyboard would be kinda of cool, but it defeats the whole purpose of "portable" calculators.

No, it doesnt defeat the purpose of a handheld calc. It would probabilly be compact as well so it wouldn't take up much space and it would make it more like a palm.

Besides, think about how you would look in school with that keyboard plug into the calculator. I mean just think about it!
During launch, you sat your calculator & keyboard on the launch room table. Everyone staring out you, possibly smiling or laughing. Some may rudely go up to and ask "YO dorkster, wuz that?".
Would you really want this keyboard?

I guess some of us dork would sacrifice our reputation or image to have this thingiemagig. What am I saying? What reputation/image? Who cares what they think right?.........
But anyway if TI would release this keyboard thingie, they should add few more useful things like, extra-Flash memory, multi-tap link ports, and stuff. And they should come with different colors.

Well I have a Visor Deluxe and fold up Stowaway keyboard and take notes in class with it. People think it's cool. The novelty wears off though, and it recently broke. :-/ I hope the warranty is still good.

I have the keyboard, too... it has now become a necessity, seeing how my screen is cracked in two places...

BTW, if anyone has been trying to visit my web site, it's down until further notice. I am yet to figure out how to share a Windows 98 internet connection with a Windows XP computer. Once I get that, I can get my site online again.

A palm?? I have my calculater to help me do calculations (that's also why it's called a calculator). If you want a palm go buy one!
I think TI should focus on developing apps and features that actually can be used for doing what a calculator is for.

I agree. I have a Visor Deluxe (with PalmOS) and the TIs will never match it. The method of backing up your data is messy and slow, whereas PDAs have good methods of backing up with the cradles and hotsyncs and backup modules (at least the handspring line has backup modules). The TI-89 is never going to be my organizer, just my graphing calculator, so TI should focus on that.

A full sized QWERTY keyboard would be an interesting piece of equipment to have. It would make basic programming a more enjoyable (for some) experience. And for first post, I have no clue. Maybe they get some special program if they get 1st post.

One more thing,
this is a little thing I got from my math teacher:
1. Think of a number
2. Add 3
3. Multiply by two
4. Subtract 4
5. Divide by two
6. Subtract your original number
7. The answer is 1 !
(I hope I typed that right.)
If you know a number that won't come out as 1, please let me know! And infinity doesn't count.

That's probably because the TI-89's AMS cancels the variable (infinity in your case) out before it evalutates the expression.

Why keyboard

External keyboard for calculators would be nice if it appeared about 15 years ago (for users of Casio fx8500 or HP 28s). Today everyone has PC, an it is more comfortable to type long text (this is you need external keyboard for) on PC and send it to calculator than spend the batteries. In my opinion, this is my priority list of additional hardware:

1. Pocket modem. With the modem you can read E-mail, download required files, or browse simple web pages. Combined with portable telephone, it gives you more practical device than laptop.

2. Cassete interface. This can be simple medium for storing files independently from computer. Actually, to realise it, will be enough to put few transistors and capacitors over the port link.

3. Printer interface. The oldest calculators like
TI-59 had it, while modern TI-89 has not. To realise it, will be enough to convert serial to paralel signal. Also, this will cover IOmega Zip drive.

4. Memory expanders. Memory is always welcome, although using it as dongle is painful.

5. External keyboard. Nice to relax your fingers, if you have not PC.

>>> 3. Printer interface. The oldest calculators like

Which is interesting, since there's a TI-89 command to print out the contents of a TI-89 TEXT variable on a printer. But there's no (commercial) printers that hook up to the 89...

Funny, I never noticed that!

**runs to find TI-89**
(Okay, so I walked, hey I'm tired today!)
**turns on TI-89**
**Types [APPS], 8, 3, down, [t][e][s][t][p][r][o][g], [ENTER]**
**[F2]**

Oh my gosh, I never noticed that! That is so weird!

I don't even know what that command stuff is! Perhaps they're inventing a TI-Printer, or, it's for taking notes and sending it to the computer and printing it there or something..........

Okay, what is the EOF, and how can you execute text?

     15 May 2002, 02:05 GMT

Re: Re: Re: Why keyboard
Chivo  Account Info

EOF = end of file (most commonly)

To execute text, the line needs to be marked "Command" (have a "C" on the left side of the colon). The line of text is copied to the home screen line and is executed as if you typed it in there. You can make program-like text files, actually. (There are some limitations, of course. For example, For..EndFor cannot be on separate lines, etc.)

HAHAHAHAHAHA
WEEIIIIRD stuff happens if you install the LATEST DoorsOS (the one NOT on TICalc) on AMS 2.05. Like, I tried to recall a variable, and the window STAYED THERE after I closed it. And when I tried to make a text variable, a line about 30 px. wide appeared in the top left of the screen and an ADDRESS ERROR was soon to follow. DON'T USE DOORSOS! IT WILL F--- YOU UP!

The prtscrn command seems to pause because that's all it does if it isn't connected to a printer. Apparently, a while back there was a graph-link style parallel port adaptor for TI calcs, and you could directly connect it to a printer. If you used that command while connected, it printed (in b&w) the contents of the screen. Weird, eh?
