TI-Keyboard: Coming Soon?
Posted by Eric on 11 May 2002, 22:25 GMT

Several people have alerted me to an interesting new piece of hardware mentioned on Page 8 of the recent TI-Cares publication- a full-sized QWERTY keyboard that hooks up into your calculator's link port. A couple keyboard projects have been in the works lately by independent developers, but apparently TI has decided to make their own official version. More news to come? Hopefully...

Eew they used that ugly orange. It looks nice but would be better with a combined cradle to prop it up

how about a memory expansion card that can hold like 8 MB, and is the same size as your thumb nail with the little plug sticking out? that'd be so buff... you could cheat on tests and stuff...

And if your teacher does a memory reset how would it help, you would loose the drivers for it

Maybe a push button on the external memroy that initiates the silent link and installs the drivers on you calc.

AMS 2.06 will provide the drivers, and yes, that push thingy silence works too.

I had to get the file from TI site recently, and it was 2.07. It sucks, as DoorsOS and HWPatch2 don't work with it :( only nostub games for me! Where do I get AMS2.05 again?

I don't know what you're talking about, since TI hasn't even come out with 2.06 yet.

Actually the MMC card expander I am creating will be able to send the driver to the calc without a driver on the calc...so there!

Geez 45min ago this article wasnt here... and now already 9 comments, guess im just slow... anyway, this has some great potential. If they could implement some kind of external memory card (as someone mentioned in a previous comment) calcs like the 89 could compete with modern handhelds (which is what i think ti is going for with a keyboard) I really look forward to this and hope they dont drop the project....

There's an understatement.

But then /. serves about 1E6 requests daily, while ticalc.org serves a mere 59,361.

Interesting. Maybe they could have a USB link or something else built in to make it better.
I think ticalc.org needs a rating system like Slashdot.

This is all good and nice, but I'd really rather see a smaller keyboard that folds up or something, like what is available for the Palm Pilots, because whoever said it is right - the idea is great, but a full sized keyboard takes away from the (easy) portability of the calc. Example - I've got a 83+ SE, and one of the apps I've got is the QWERTY text editor, which I use to take notes on my calc. I can type fairly quickly, but it's clumsy - I'd much rather have a keyboard...as long as it wasn't bulky.

I don't think the keyboard takes away from the portability of the calculator--you can always leave the keyboard behind. It would make more sense to make the keyboard collapsable, but o well.

Re: Re: Re: Re: TI-Keyboard: Coming Soon?

yeah, you certainly could leave it behind...but like I had said, I use the QWERTY app to take notes in class - I'd do the exact same thing with a keyboard, but a big, full sized one would be rediculous.

The keyboard looks pretty compact ... a little longer than a TI-8X calculator ...
The fact that the picture of the keyboard shows it hooked up to a Silver Edition makes me think that it'll probably be only for the 89 and 83+/SE ... darn.

I imagine it should be fairly easy to implement support for it ourselves on the other calcs...

It would be. All TI calculators share the same link port design. The question of support would be limited only by the calcs that have drivers written for them. I guarantee that, a month after release, if any calcs aren't supported by TI, someone else will write a driver for that calc.

the drivers are already built into the calcs. the calcs have a remote control mode. by sending the correct data in through the link port you put it in recieve mode. then you can send virtual keypress codes in through the link port and the calc responds like the keys have actually been pressed.

dba.ticalc.org already has a keyboard that makes use of this for the 89.

I said all of this last time there was news on ticalc about a keyboard.

ahhhh...I didn't see the pictures. That looks pretty cool, and it is good sized but not too big. Still, I think they should aim for a foldup keyboard - I too have used one, and they are pretty good.

It's got arrows--look underneath the right [SHIFT] button. And many keyboards don't have NUM pads--and if you want a NUM pad for your calculator, unplug the keyboard and physically use the buttons on the calculator--there's many more features than on a NUM pad in it :).

I bought a collapsible keyboard for my Visor Deluxe, which was more expensive than the normal keyboards. It was slick, but it broke within a school year.

Well, the TI-92 and 92+ both have QWERTY keyboards, maybe it'll be something along those lines in terms of size...

same here, I wish QWERTY had support for archived files on the 83+(SE)

ticalc.org doesn't get near the anount of traffic /. does. But they could just use slashcode--that way they wouldn't have to write something like that themselves. Also, ticalc.org doesn't need to add karma whoring to its problems.

Slashcode is configurable and GPL, so it could be modified to better work for a smaller site. Plus, consider than many of the articles here get as many comments as the slashdot article, there just happen to be many fewer articles. I agree that Slashcode would be a Great Thing (TM) to be used on this site. All those annoying FP's could disappear. Plus, karma whoring isn't a big problem, as long as people actually write good posts.

Heh. What exactly are you doing here if you dislike forums so much?

And Slashdot is a good site for technology and computer related news.

Plus, we were talking about SlashCode, which is not Slashdot but which is a GPL news posting system that powers Slashdot.
