ticalc.org Downtime
Posted by ticalc.org on 26 October 2001, 17:21 GMT

To our users,

We apologize for the downtime in the past week and the resulting inconvenience. We are now pleased to reopen all areas of the site apart from the file archives, which we expect to bring back as well as soon as we have completed a review to remove potentially inappropriate material. Unfortunately, we haven't set a date for bringing the archives back up, but we will post more details once we have a better estimate. Please bear with us -- our archives are extensive and the review will take time. If there is any area where our visitors can be of help, we will post more information.

Despite rumors to the contrary, we have received no threats or demands requesting we close our file archives. This is a decision made by our staff in the best interest of the site's future. This is also a move we take seriously, as we are aware that our users have come to rely on the availability of our archives.

Until our archives return, we invite you to try those of other sites linked from our front page and Community section. Authors of our hosted sites whose links are affected by the closure of our archives can email us at hosting@ticalc.org for assistance. Thanks for your continuing patience,

the ticalc.org staff

This is my view of what probably happened:
Some soccer mom saw her little "baby" highschooler with his TI-83 plus and he was playing a "naughty" game. The kid asked her what some word that was in the game meant and she got all offeneded. She got mad and called up the store where she got the CD with the games on it and started bitching about inappropriate content without a parental advisory. The store got tired and mad at her bitching and called up TI and told them what evil people they are and told them about the Devil-worshipping practices of their new CD. TI called up the people who run ticalc.org and bitched them out for a few hours and the ticalc people took the site down for a little while just to please everybody. I don't really thinks it's that big of a deal, because I don't download games a whole lot. Anyway, this thing will be over soon and hopefully nobody will lose faith in ticalc.org; they have done nothing wrong. If anything happens, peoeple will hear about this "inappropriate content" and investigate it, which will bring more people into the community.

"peoeple will hear about this "inappropriate content" and investigate it"

i think everyone is now looking through the CD for this 'calc porn' that *MIGHT* have been responsible for this... lol... i looked for a while... couldn't find anything... i'm not a pervert, so i gave up after about 3 minutes. (although i did get some of the britney spears video 'stronger' on my calc... with TIMM [btw, i was VERY suprised at how well the videos look on the calc with TIMM]... can't wait till they don't put a limit on how long the videos can be)

did you check the TI-86 graphics files? i know of at least one nude woman picture in there that might be on the cd... (not a pervert either)
concerning TIMM: there has to be a limit because of the available RAM on the calculator. if the 83/83+ only has, what, 26K RAM?, then you're only going to be able to make small videos, unless you can run them from the archive... the videos can be longer on the 86, though, because we have 98K RAM. if you want longer videos, get a better calculator :)

good thinking... when i said 'no limit' i meant until there isn't enough memory to go on. (ti-89's would be able to have HUGE videos with 200K of RAM (i don't know if RAM is the limit, are there any limits before the RAM limit? like can you only fill up 1 data registry or what? i have no idea how memory management works)

Why can't you split videos that are larger than 64k into parts and then dump them into archive. That'd make calc videos very long and popular!

Why does looking at nude women make you a "pervert"? Perversion is "a sexual practice or act considered abnormal or deviant". Heterosexual tendencies would be the least perverted of any. Homosexual tendencies might be considered perverted, from a traditional standpoint, although in our "politically correct" society, such things are accepted. To contrast, most anyone would call someone who has sexual tendencies towards animals as perverted. I find it disturbing that such normal tendencies are termed as perverted.

Lust is perversion. Staring at nude pictures is lust.
There is a VERY big difference between lust and love.

Sure, but that still doesn't make it abnormal or deviant. However, if you are saying that it is "perverted" in the sense that it is "marked by immorality", as from a traditional religious standpoint, then I can agree with you. The point I was trying to make is that many peopl are quick to just term anything of that nature as "perverted", without having a real understanding of what that term means.

Your totally right...TI is totally over-reacting about the whole thing. Lets just look at the recall article...

<<We have recently recalled a software CD that was packaged with two of our calculator accessory kits, the TI-Fun Kit and Connectivity Value Kit, because the CD contained inappropriate content. This content is inconsistent with TI's moral and ethical standards. It was created and compiled by a calculator-user website not otherwise affiliated with TI, and it was not sufficiently screened by us prior to packaging it with these accessories.>>

ok...."and it was not sufficiently screened by us prior to packaging it with these accessories." Why is this ticalc.org's fault? TI should have checked it in the first place, if they publish the CD, you would think they would forsee somthing like this happening...

<<We immediately removed the link to the calculator-user website from our website.>>
Well thats over-reacting...removing ticalc.org's link, is guess this is their way of showing the public they have defeated the big bad ticalc.org that corrupted their youth (or somthing)

<<We initiated a public notice campaign, beginning with announcements in newspapers nationwide Sunday, October 21, to reach those customers who have received the CD through their purchase of the accessories, and to ask them to return the CD to us for documentation and proper disposal.>>
Wow...kinda harsh, they are talking like the CD's are made of anthrax or somthing, and the "unfortuneate" people who buy them will be forever corrupted by some stupid program on a little LCD screen...

<<If you have purchased one of these accessories, we are asking for your help to return the CD to us for documentation and proper disposal.>>
"Proper Disposal" what does that mean, dump them into a volcano where no one will ever be offended by them?

Ok...enough dissing TI I unsderstand why tey are doing this, but i could have easially been prevented. Finally, im not sure why everyone is so upset with the CD being recalled...you can just download from ticalc.org the files aren't that big. Ok...i'll shut up now, i just hope the archives will be back up.

the problem with society
phireph0x

I agree with many of you: TI is overreacting in this situation.. why go to these extremes? It's because we live in a PC (politically correct), sue-happy society. One where parents don't raise their children, they expect the mainstream media to do that. Why can't people just be cool with each other, not easily offended, not ready to sue at the slightest
thing?

<p>Who knows what set this whole thing off, but many of you have the right idea: someone got upset that junior was playing drug wars on his calc, or saw a bad word, and freaked. Instead of doing the right thing, what a "good" parent would do: tell junior not to play the game, explain why it's bad, etc. etc... they call TI and bitch, threaten to sue, you know the story. Better than actually having to discuss real issues with your kid, right? Better to make the company pay than to simply tell the kid not to play the game.. what a waste. 99.98% of the material on that CD was perfectly fine. And the other .02% was probably nothing to get worked up about.. and if it offends you, the answer is simple: DON'T USE IT.

<p>TI should claim no responsibility for this: I'm sure they have disclaimers all over the CD stating the contents of the CD are "as is", and not an official TI product. They really dropped the ball on this one. And severing all ties with ticalc.org.. baad form, very bad. Shame on you, TI. You get a little heat from a few worked-up moms with nothing better do that threaten litigation, and you take the cowardly way out. This is intolerable. You should have defended your position on the "not our software, does not represent TI" stance, as it's perfectly valid. Maybe take the offending software off of the next release. But to outright cancel the entire CD project, with all of the valuable software it contains?? Way overboard. They've got you shaking, you're so frightened by the prospect of being sued.

<p>Want to give TI a piece of your mind? E-mail them at the URL above, let them know what you think.

I'm not sure this has anything whatsoever to do with litigation. TI found out somehow that inappropriate material was on the CD and felt responsible for it, so they did what they did (and I think it was a good thing). Ticalc.org should have been more careful -- after all, according to the contract, they were supposed to exclude bad content.

I'm a little surprised TI didn't screen the content before distributing it, but that's another story...

After reading every post so far, i figure I had to input my two cents on this issue.

Appropriateness is arbitrary. What I think is perfectly fine some other people may not, and vice versa. So what does this mean? It means that we will get a list of what is "appropriate" for us spoon-fed to us by a few individuals at the top of a powerful company. So why does ticalc have to clean up their archives, when threatened by TI, although TI has nothing to do with the ticalc site, which they are stressing. Freedom of speech is very limited for the average person (or website) on a topic like this, if I have a program that I want to get out there, but one person in authority doesn't like it, there's nothing I can do. This statement applies to games like drugwars and the like, but not for the pictures that are on the disc. Personally I think if you have to install a mature themed picture on your calculator, you need a life. But, if you will also check the archives, the pictures in question (I found some in the 86 section) were all part of development packs, and were simply an example of what the calc could do. I don't think they needed to put them in, but if you don't want them, then don't install them! Simple, right?

Apparently not. Oh well, not like it's really going to matter much in a few months anyway. It will be forgotten and things will be back to normal.

Of course this is all my opinion. Anyone else agree or disagree with me?

From the news item:
"Despite rumors to the contrary, we have received no threats or demands requesting we close our file archives. This is a decision made by our staff in the best interest of the site's future."

In my opinion, TICalc.org made a good move.

Sorry, I was not clear. I didn't say close, I said clean up. I read somewere I think on TI's website that said something about asking ticalc to clean up their archives.

Regardless, I believe my point stands. People don't seem to understand the concept of a user based website, and the material that could be contained within. I don't think TI should be surprised, they should have reviewed the programs better then.
