ticalc.org Downtime
Posted by ticalc.org on 26 October 2001, 17:21 GMT

To our users,

We apologize for the downtime in the past week and the resulting inconvenience. We are now pleased to reopen all areas of the site apart from the file archives, which we expect to bring back as well as soon as we have completed a review to remove potentially inappropriate material. Unfortunately, we haven't set a date for bringing the archives back up, but we will post more details once we have a better estimate. Please bear with us -- our archives are extensive and the review will take time. If there is any area where our visitors can be of help, we will post more information.

Despite rumors to the contrary, we have received no threats or demands requesting we close our file archives. This is a decision made by our staff in the best interest of the site's future. This is also a move we take seriously, as we are aware that our users have come to rely on the availability of our archives.

Until our archives return, we invite you to try those of other sites linked from our front page and Community section. Authors of our hosted sites whose links are affected by the closure of our archives can email us at hosting@ticalc.org for assistance. Thanks for your continuing patience,

the ticalc.org staff

Well, for those of you wondering, I've been rummaging through the 83+ archives a few times, here's stuff I've found that might have had something to do with this mess.

First of all, the dozen or so versions of Drug Wars:
These usually didn't contain vulgar language, but did promote the usuage of drugs. A favorite alternative of mine to this was Stock Wars, same game concept, but without the crap.

Then, there were the countless number of pimp quest's and pimp games:
These were probably the worst, containing just about every vulgar word known and in the games you would take part in activies such as training your, umm..."female workers" to sell themselves to make money for you.

One specific game I can remember, it was called Jeopardy, but umm...it wasn't the Jeopardy we all know. All the questions had something to do with sex. It did say, "parental advisory" or something along those lines though.

I hope this sheds a little light for some of you.

I just wanna say that I think that this is all bullshit, because the kid's that need these calculators are in 8th grade or above, unless they are geniuses. So these kids which would be 14+ I think would be mature enough to handle these games, Hell, I've made 2 pimp quests and my friends love them, they dont call them inapropriate. I think its all the part of the stupid fucking censorship act. What the hell is this country coming to?, I mean that they are trying to make us all into Barney worshippers. We cant have any fun anymore because of this stupid stuff, like when they tried to make it 18+ to buy Mortal Combat,or when they tried to make a curfew law. These people suck and just have nothing better to do then screw us over. I could go on about my rant over this issue but I'll end it here, I think you get my point. (Any "inapropriate language" used in this post was merly for exclamation.)

It was a fun game and it didn't have any graphical representations of it's contents, only text. BTW, I think that kids who believe it's inapropriate won't even know the meanings of the game's words.

I think it's clear that the programs don't belong on a TI CD for sure. It's an unprecedented thing in the first place, and definitely unprecedented that TI would distribute this sort of thing.

You claim that the only source of conscience is ignorance. Conscience is built up or stunted by knowledge.

Come on, TI wanted cash so much that it didn't even review the contents of the CD. And TI cares so much about content! Then why the hell they trash ticalc.org for their own fault?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: ticalc.org Downtime
lalu

Because, AFAIK, TI had a contract with TICalc.org that TICalc would screen the content for the CDs. Obviously, TICalc didn't do it very well... the problem with TI was that they were too trusting.

A contract? How would you know? I thought it was a non profit stuff, TI just bundled it with calc accessories to attract people and it did, but TI fucked it all!

Note, of course, that DrugWars is easily the most popular game for Palm Devices, and nobody cries bloody murder over that.

The problem is TI's educational focus - they just don't have room for calc pr0n. I can't blame them.

Yeah, I had a blast playing Drug Wars, I even made a version for my ti-80 (ti-80...haha). I just don't think TI wanted a bunch of angry mothers knocking on their door because their kid's pretending to deal drugs on a calculator. TI kinda tries to gear towards the whole family, they have sections on their website for parents, teachers and students. They just want their content to be appropriate for anyone. I've seen some pretty young people who probably shouldn't have graphing calculators yet, but they do. Especially now with the 73 there are probably more younger people buying them. Since most versions of Drug Wars are BASIC, they can easily be ported to the 73. Just copy and paste in the Graphlink software.

Look, Palm Devices aren't intended for kids and such but calc are and I think that's what drives this whole shit. I personally don't care about some games having some censored stuff, cuz it just makes them more fun but some parents make a fuss about this 'inapropriate' content. TI should get a life!

Now here is my comment/Question:
wasn't TI informed that the programs here on ticalc were made by people from all over the world? if so y the (i hate to say the word here)HELL did they not put a disclamer or notice on the cd that kept them from this kind of situation? If not y were they not informed?

being that the archives consist of the authors works and every body all over the world use these programs i think that it is stupid that sombody found something and complained abouti when all they had to do was not use that program at all.

if TI wants to not be affiliated with ticalc any more then it should have found a better way to do that( instead of saying that the "CD" was bad and we didn't follow guiedlines

as of this moment the only sight where i can find ti 86 and ti 83 programs, utilities, games, edcuational stuffs, and compilers all in the same place is down, anmd it stinks!!!

How would you like free advertising and publishing of your software? How about for 44 pieces of your software? I think it's an EXCELLENT idea. Good way to get your work spread around.

I would not be looking for publicity by any profesional company.

As for ticalc, why would they need TI's help? They already had word of mouth, in any discussion group talking about calcs (Even Tis up until this) they were positively discussed, they are indexed on hundreds of SEs. What could they hope to get, a 10 percent visitation increase, more little kids spamming, more virusd alerts?

For crying out loud. If you dont want yer kids looking at porn, then block the websites. If you dont want yer kids knowning the word fuck or whatnot then too bad. You will learn these things, YOU WILL seen porn atleast once in your life and its better to happen now then later when the kids out on a date with a hot chick and doesnt know that the fuck a pussy is, or where to stick it. TI, grow the fuck up.

Thanks for that wonderful display of the problem. Not everyone and certainly not everyone's parents think that the point of dating and living is to get sex. And they do not want their kids using material that suggests such.
TI should have scaned the files better before making their own CDs, but I can certainly see why they would not want games that involve buying and selling women and drugs.
It is not "just games!" How would you feel if you featured in a game where somone could buy and sell you and do whatever they wanted? Stuff like this effects real people. And it is not 100%, but I can certainly see a strong corralation between people who would play these games and people who would defend similar behavior (perhaps to a lesser degree) in real life.
For many obvious legal, ethical, and moral reasons, TI does not need to be associated with simulated drug trade.
Now don't get me wrong, I am not for cencership. But I only care about that if a government tries to do that. Private businesses can choose to associate themselvs with whatever they want to.

Actually, you're wrong. People are animals. Animals live to reproduce. Therefore, people live to reproduce, and therefore we live to have sex.

Simple logical deduction. Think about this for a second and you'll realize I'm right and that all your base are belong to us.
