ticalc.org Downtime
Posted by ticalc.org on 26 October 2001, 17:21 GMT

To our users,

We apologize for the downtime in the past week and the resulting inconvenience. We are now pleased to reopen all areas of the site apart from the file archives, which we expect to bring back as well as soon as we have completed a review to remove potentially inappropriate material. Unfortunately, we haven't set a date for bringing the archives back up, but we will post more details once we have a better estimate. Please bear with us -- our archives are extensive and the review will take time. If there is any area where our visitors can be of help, we will post more information.

Despite rumors to the contrary, we have received no threats or demands requesting we close our file archives. This is a decision made by our staff in the best interest of the site's future. This is also a move we take seriously, as we are aware that our users have come to rely on the availability of our archives.

Until our archives return, we invite you to try those of other sites linked from our front page and Community section. Authors of our hosted sites whose links are affected by the closure of our archives can email us at hosting@ticalc.org for assistance. Thanks for your continuing patience,

the ticalc.org staff

wow there is now a disclaimer on the comment board.

So did you ticalc guys take the opportunity to delete redundant files and feature many great programs which escaped notice?

I think there was, but not on the comment board itself.

Anyway, good to see 'em back up. Gave me quite a scare for a while.

I Have all the TI-graphing calculators I think Ti should make a debuging team. The people that put inopriate stuff on TI thanks alot, not. I am myself coming out with TIMeCH for TI 83+ 89 92/92+

TI is NOT ticalc.org,
ticalc.org has problems with the archives,
TI with the CD, containing some of ticalc.org's archives.
Just to have it clear to all ;-)

...it's certainly dealing with sex (some files contains pictures for ti89, for example...but i don't remember it to be very explicit) or maybe religion

well, forget it, let's just thank ticalc.org for doing the best they can, and hope everything will be cleaned up

There were two nude 86 pics, but the description warned about them. How much can 4 shades of grey expose anyway?

Yeah, but the fact still remains. I think reviewing content on upload would be the best solution for ticalc.org to solve this problem, but it will just slow everything down even more.

I thought that was why it took so long in the first place.

All this, and still no new survey!

Personally, I think the archives were simply too big for ticalc's good. So many redundant files, and clones of games under different names. As for the inappropiate junk, good riddence. Ticalc should repost files after they are reviewed, that way, we don't have to wait for all of them to be reviewed to use the archives again.

We're kinda in a bad spot for program availability. Ticalc's archives are down, and Dimension TI is having really bad server problems (DS is on the same server). So, I can't use Dimension TI, TCPA, or DS during my waking hours, and ticalc's archives are gonna be down for a while. Are 83+ users destined to use authors' sites individually (many of which are hosted by Dimension TI)?!!?!?!?!?

Are you crazy? ticalc.org is the site where you know you can get what you are looking for. My latest project has been delayed by a week due to ticalc.org being offline, as I have not had access to required routines. Even after hours of seaching the net, I could not find routines I knew where on ticalc.org (I'd seen them before). The last thing we want is smaller archives.

I bet most of us don't want smaller archives! The larger archive the larger your file selection, and you don't have to download everything and then say it's inapropriate content.

Does "what you are looking for" include several versions of the same thing for the same calc, with little or no difference?

I have nothing against DIFFERENT files, I think that the redundant files should be gotten rid of, leave the best copy/version of each one. It would make the archives considerably smaller. Too many of the same game is annoying.

Agree, but most of the time different versions/clones of games/progs feature something that others don't and the word 'best' varies from person to person. Not to say leaving the 'best' version would be unfair to other authors who had their removed. I'm sure you can debate this much further, but I'll stop now.

lol, I feel your pain. Personally, I could think of a number of appropriate surveys right now, and I can't see any reason they can't put already-reviewed files back online. But give them a little time. I'm sure they don't like having their archives offline either.

Re: Re: ticalc.org Downtime - BAN BASIC PROGRAMS
Ross Franklin  Account Info

I think that ticalc.org should take out all of the BASIC games. They are mostly all really crappy, and I bet that most of the time it takes to upload a file is due to a vast majority of BASIC programs. Whenever I come to the site, I never even think about downloading something that's made in BASIC because I know that I'm probably just going to delete it afterwards.

Actually, I've found some really great basic programs. Many of them are good. Ticalc should screen the basic programs and take out all of those really horrible games that are clones of drugwars or whatever, and all of the dumb password protection basic programs. btw, I made this really cool random name generator in basic, and submitted it four months ago! It still hasn't come out yet!
