TI Announces TI-84 Plus, SE; TI-89 Titanium
Posted by Michael on 7 January 2004, 22:25 GMT

TI-84 Plus Silver EditionTI has announced two new calculators for release in the spring: the TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. Both are fully compatible with the TI-83 Plus and TI-83 Plus Silver Edition. Both have new physical styles, an integrated USB port for computer connectivity, an internal clock, and an available kickstand.

The TI-84 Plus features 480 KB of flash memory, 24 KB of user RAM, and a 15 MHz clock speed, while the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition has 1.5 MB of flash memory, available interchangeable faceplates, and is also 15 MHz. If you haven't already guessed, the Silver Edition, like its 83+ counterpart, is silver in color.

TI-89 TitaniumFor the summer of 2004, the high-end calculator line gets a metallic lift with the TI-89 Titanium. In addition to tripling the memory to 2.7 MB of flash, it also features a built-in USB port for computer connectivity as well as the kickstand slidecase (I'm not sure if this is included or an add-on, I think it's purchased separately). All three calculators feature high-contrast LCDs and are compatible with TI's projection devices (like ViewScreen).

Update: According to this press release, the 84+ will retail at $109.99 and the 84+ SE at $129.99. It seems that these are intended 83+/83+ SE replacements. The TI-89 Titanium press release quotes a street price of $149.99.

Same here. Good thing I refreshed the main page right before I sent it.

Yes they are bigger. I'm only guessing, but I doubt TI would make the screen smaller.

I prefer the width before the height, but okay. Same resolution.

You know, they didn't really write much on the site about the TI-89 Titanium, but it still looks cool anyway. 2.7MB!? That is incredible. That's how much the v200, has, right? Wow... I could actually fit oblivion on that calculator. I couldn't fit it on my other one (I deleted everything but about 2k of space... I think it's just too big). Ah well.

I won't have any more memory problems, because I like to fit lots of stuff on my calc. This is just amazing. I may sell my old 89, then get the titanium. I'd have to back up my calc though, then transfer to the new one. anyone have any idea about the cost of the titanium 89?

That reminds me. I deleted _850_ KB of Archive (and all of my RAM) on my calculator before I could get Oblivion to fit. Now, it has 180 KB RAM. I run Oblivion, so the save file takes up 8 KB, leaving 172 KB. And I get a memory error when I try to play Oblivion again. So I have to delete the save file. UGH! I think I'll go get Xpand.

That won't help you. The problem is RAM, not archive. Your RAM is consumed by FlashApp global variables. You need to delete or hide (using ExtendeD's FlashApp Hider) some FlashApps.

Nope, it won't. Now all of my FlashApps are gone because of a bug in ID, and I STILL don't have enough memory!! UGH!

btw, I've managed to figure out a bug/cheat in Oblivion: press APPS, then any other key to skip to the next level. And I beat the game with it! :D

And I've gotten to level 19 without using that cheat.

Well, please add a lowercase L to the end of it then... or just follow the links from the article through yourself... the URL input seems to have a max length of 64 chars...

The TI-84 Plus SE isn't any better than the TI-83 Plus SE. I would like to have a TI-89 Titanium. It's just as good as the V200 and isn't banned on most tests.

Holy cow!! This is crazy!!! I guess I'm going to be getting some new TI-89Ti's.

Is this just one big scheme to try and make more money?

Do you think that they would do something that would not make them money?

I just realized something interesting.

The chemical symbol for Titanium is Ti. So this is the TI-89Ti? Sounds a little redundant with the TI's ;-)

*drools some more*

I thought about that too, though if they could have made it TI-89It, then that would been even cooler. Since I have a HW1 89 and since I've been considering getting a HW2 89 for a little while...I'll wait a while...

I just now realized what dialect you're trying to imitate.

And yes, obviously, this is a TI marketing scheme to get more money, since there really aren't that many new features. However, it's always exciting to see a new calculator released, and it draws attention to TI's graphing calculator business, so it's a good move for them. They should just add more stuff. :-D (v400)

I'm thinking a 16-color display, like the GBA. And a little wider resolution. Not to mention a faster processor, at least 15 MHz like the 84SE. (The current 89Ti has a 10 MHz processor) And maybe 8 MB of memory, expandable with expansion cards like the hp49g+.

Or better, a whole new OS. One with password protection. And color. And doesn't crash with Address Errors, Illegal Instructions, etc. And a word processor. A smarter CAS. Networking. A 14 Kbps modem! A mouse, or two sets of arrow keys! More strategically placed modifier keys! I could go on and on.

It is really stupid if TI put a HW1 proc in a brand new product. The proc is 12MHz unless otherwise stated.
