Joey and Morgan join ticalc.org
Posted by Magnus on 1 March 2003, 19:25 GMT

The long hunt is over, and we have finally hired ourselves a couple of file archivers. New to our staff are Joey Gannon and Morgan Davies, who will share the job of file archiving.

They have just been added to our systems, and it will be a while before they have been introduced in all the parts of our systems, so please give them a while to get up to speed. Once there, though, we hope to see the large backlog of files shrink fast.

Update (Nick): Files seem to be trickling in. After seeing Random Numbar Generator's 73 port as the first added file I didn't know whether to laugh or cry; nonetheless, here we are.

Finally... someone to process all these files!
I personally have been waiting for
4 months now for my posts to be updated
(in the TI-86 graphics section I tried
to send some pics from Need for Speed but
they haven't been updated for four months now)

And btw... first post :)

Greyscale pictures, one of the classic methods used to cheat on the busiest author ranking.

Hey maybe one of the new archivers can create a folder for greyscale pictures that doesn't get counted in the download stats, similar to what was done for ebooks.

I beleive that's the idea. It has been done for some calculators by Niklas, but he hasn't had the time to do it for all of them. That should be fixed now with two archivers.

Thanks. I was a bit negative and forgot to wish congratulations to the new archivers. Sorry. And I am glad to see that there are two of them.

I see that ticalc.org is gaining momentum, rising from it's slump. Don't loose it.

I would still love to see statistics on the total downloads over number of files (including those in the media folders) for each author. The problem with the current stats is that the people uploading loads of... hmmm... not too popular files are not penalised in the stats in any way. However, they would be likely to perform badly in such ratio statistics. It would be interesting to see just for the psychological effect. :)

and super author ratings done like this:

#downloads/sum of total time each file has been available

with that new authors still have a chance of being on the list.

I don't think this is possible, because the time of the files always changes when an update occurs. Somehow I doubt that ticalc keeps tracks of the first upload date for each file. Otherwise, I also think that this would be more just.

Note, however, that the current statistics aren't favourable for new authors either. The ratio stats would give them more opportunity to gain popularity. Remember Gemini or Doom 83.

Isn't that what the most downloaded this week ranking is for?

While I think ticalc should add changes just to stop abuse, they can only make it so fair. Personally I find the statistics interesting because it puts a number on the the number of people who've downloaded my programs. Also if I compared myself to others I'd loose :) Unless I updated yapt again, that would put me in the top for a few days.

>>Isn't that what the most downloaded this week ranking is for?

this would be different. in this case, Will White would be placed dead last, or close to it.

I liked my idea so much that i just added it to CalcGames.org - check it out

As would I, although, frankly, I don't really care that much (I'm embarrassed that I even made those grayscale pictures).

Congrats to Morgan and Joey ... now that there are two new archivers, I think I'll start working on programs again (quality ones, that is).

Yep, me too. TI-89 C games, TI-82 z80 games (they won't be all that great for a while, but I'm trying), and TI-anything math programs. I surprised myself, I actually made a good math program in BASIC that I used non-stop in math class (I found they're a lot more useful than I ever imagined). I wrote one to simplify quadratic equations (took a while). It actually drew it on the screen as you would if you were doing it with pencil and paper. It did all this other stuff too... I think it's pretty cool, considering I wrote it ;)

Interesting idea, but in the near future it is not probable that TICalc.org will change their ranking systems.

NO pictures. That's just why the queue gets filled up. Nobody downloads pictures and it's a cheap way to look like you programmed a lot of files.

Honestly now, what is it with the 'first post' declarations? I can figure that out for myself, thank you.

Normally 'first post' boasts are deleted immediately (with MV's new delete thinger, arg), but this one had enough On-Topic stuff in it so that it was deemed SAFE. :)
