Arena 3D released
Posted by Niklas on 7 October 2002, 15:00 GMT
More 3D goodness: Malcolm Smith just released Arena 3D, a First Person Shooter built using Thomas Nussbaumers FAT Engine for the TI-89, TI-92 Plus and Voyage 200 calculators. The game has a Rocket Arena theme, you can strafe, and special features include a double-speed mode and a "hit find" maneuver (automatically turn to whoever/whetever shot you). More features, options and levels are planned; take a look at Malcolms web page for more information. One small point: being a pre-release, there are still bugs. Malcolm notes one in particular in the readme.txt file, so make sure to backup any important files before you try this out. Update (Niklas): Malcolm has released an Arena 3D SDK (sort of) with everything you need to create your own levels.

This game is AWESOME. I highly recommend that anyone who has an 89 try it out. Good job Malcom! On a side note, it's good to see a new news article. Keep up the good work, programmers and ticalc.org staff!

It's not a foreign language, it's a changed form of English. It's called "Pig Latin".
Whenever a word starts with a letter other than a, e, i, o, or u, you put the first letter at the end of the word and add "ay". For example,
calculator
becomes
alculatorcay.
If a word starts with a, e, i, o, or u, you just add "way". For example,
apple
becomes
appleway.
So the sentence
I can speak a foreign language.
becomes
I ancay peaksay away oreignfay anguagelay.
He made a mistake with 'a'. He forgot to add 'way'.

Oh, look! YOU REMOVED THE FAKE SOURCE OF DOORS XP FROM YOUR SITE! Surprise surprise, you phony!
"Doors XP uses TICI 1.0, a standard for TI calculators similar to USB for computers. Below is the schematic for the BASIC TICI hub that includes Type 'A', Type 'B', and Type 'B mini' ports."
... A standard? It doesn't even exist yet. Not to mention that this text, which is on his home page, is followed by... MORE TEXT! No schematic to be seen! Wow! Instead, we get:
Here's the PIN plan of a PS/2 connector:
Pin Signal
1 Data
2 Reserved
3 Ground
4 + 5 V dc
5 Clock
6 Reserved
GND - base
Clock - middle
Data - tip
In order to build the adapter for a mouse, you need to have the following materials:
(1) mini-DIN female socket
(1) 3-AAA battery case
(3) AAA batteries
(1) SPST switch
(1) 3.5mm stereo socket
(1) 2.5mm stereo socket
(1) case, about 2 1/8" x 1 3/4" x 3/8"
(-) assorted wires
The schematic is here:
(TO BE POSTED VERY SOON)

Don't be so mean to Kerm. He sent me a working beta of DoorsXP, and it's awesome. I made a TICI hub and a ps/2 mouse adapter, and it really works! The program is awesome, it runs ion, mirage, and all other shell programs, including nostub progs. The start menu is truly amazing, with cusomizable appearances like the real Windows XP. It can also simulate shared network drives, so any other calculators on the TICI hub appear as folders on your calculator for easy file sharing or multiplayer gaming. I've tested this with mine and 2 friends' calcs on one 4-port hub. Just because he hasn't released betas to the public doesn't mean he doesn't have any working betas.... I really believe that version 1.0 will be ready by November. Nice work, Kerm!

Well, I can't promise anything, not on a short notice anyway, but if there's someone here that could explain to me how this engine works (in some detail please, so don't tell me it's a raycasting engine or anything, because that won't help me), I might be able to finally start experimenting on a serious 3D game of my own.
By the way, I had planned to post a very simple 3D-like game soon (ASM), using the idea and graphics of TXENII3D or TXEN3DII or something like that, but the original author's E-mailadress does not seem to exist. Does anyone know who I am supposed to be talking to regarding "legal rights"? I don't want to steal their graphics and their idea without ever having contacted them...
