Arena 3D released
Posted by Niklas on 7 October 2002, 15:00 GMT

More 3D goodness: Malcolm Smith just released Arena 3D, a First Person Shooter built using Thomas Nussbaumers FAT Engine for the TI-89, TI-92 Plus and Voyage 200 calculators. The game has a Rocket Arena theme, you can strafe, and special features include a double-speed mode and a "hit find" maneuver (automatically turn to whoever/whetever shot you). More features, options and levels are planned; take a look at Malcolms web page for more information.

One small point: being a pre-release, there are still bugs. Malcolm notes one in particular in the readme.txt file, so make sure to backup any important files before you try this out.

Update (Niklas): Malcolm has released an Arena 3D SDK (sort of) with everything you need to create your own levels.

What's cool (it's on Gemini, too) is that these games have all of these cool graphics and textures and stuff, but they always have to have some original, classic, good-lookin' default text on there somewhere.

Looks like a great game on the screenshots... but I seem to be having a problem. I copied all the files to my 89 (and archived a the gfx ones), then run arena(), press 2nd to start, I enter in the number of bots, frag limit, and skill.... and I end up right back at the welcome/menu screen! What am I doing wrong?

Are you sure that "a3dmaps" is on your calculator? That problem sounds like the map pack is missing.

If that doesn't help, maybe archive more files (although the game only needs about 100k of RAM free)... And if you still have trouble, email me.

- You moved the game from the "arena" directory to something different. This
problem could happen if the game was in 'arena3d' instead of 'arena', for
example. The sending software should put it in the right directory, and then
just leave it there. Note that if you used TI Connect to send Arena 3D, I have just gotten a report that it just puts the game in the 'main' folder. If this is the case, you'll need to make a new folder called 'arena', and move all game files to that.

Try that. If everything is already in an 'arena' folder, email me more information.

Opinions most definitely CAN be factual. You haven't taken a philosophy course lately, I see.

For example, I am of the opinion that I am alive. I'd like you to prove otherwise.

opinions can be based on fact, but they themselves are not factual. I can have the opinion that your dead, and until I prove it, its just opinion. I can also have the opinion that your alive, and when I prove it, (you are responding to comments, so your alive, unless some one is posting for you), it becomes fact.

If you followed that, that is amazing (that is an opinion, BTW)

I said that if you can prove it, then it is a fact, not an opinion.
ex. Opinion earth doesnt exist. (no facts to back that one up)
Fact Earth does exist (plenty facts to back that up)

I accept your challenge to prove the Earth does not exist, puny earthling.

Try to follow with your limited intellectual capacity.

Does everyone agree that "everything" is made of so-called atoms? Yes, you do agree. Now, these "atoms" are nothing more than negative, positive, and neutral charges. SO, if "everything" is made of atoms and atoms are nothing more than electric charges, then there is nothing but electric charges in the universe and any "body" in the universe is nothing more than some arbitrary designation to a collection of these charges. The Earth, as you humans describe, does not exist. The only thing in that region of the universe is a collection of charged particles bound by elementary forces.

How about more? Yeah?
You see by interpreting electro magnetic radiation. When you see the "earth," you are really interpreting the radiation of the spinning electrons that make up the atoms that compose the region of the universe named earth. How do you know that the electromagnetic radiation you are "seeing" doesn't come from a more distant source?

And finally, diving into the depths of Sci-Fi... watch the Matrix. Provide evidence that we are not in this Matrix.

Wow! I just applied chemistry and physics to real life! This is not possible. Someone, tell me I was wrong somewhere. Quickly.

Well, you failed at the second paragraph.

The Earth is DEFINED as that "collection of charged particles bound by elementary forces". So you're wrong.

Re: A visitor from another planet accepts your challenge

It doesn't matter WHAT the Earth is, or how we SEE it. What I want someone to prove is that the Earth, on ANY scale or atomic level DOES NOT EXIST. This is something that cannot be done, as I *LIVE* on the Earth and am 100% certain of its existence.

     28 October 2002, 15:44 GMT

Re: A visitor from another planet accepts your challenge

And no, that isn't how we see things. That explains why things *GIVE OFF* light. When we see the Earth, everything we see (other than from pure light sources, such as lightbulbs and the like) is *REFLECTED* light, from the sun and other stars.
