Arena 3D released
Posted by Niklas on 7 October 2002, 15:00 GMT
More 3D goodness: Malcolm Smith just released Arena 3D, a First Person Shooter built using Thomas Nussbaumers FAT Engine for the TI-89, TI-92 Plus and Voyage 200 calculators. The game has a Rocket Arena theme, you can strafe, and special features include a double-speed mode and a "hit find" maneuver (automatically turn to whoever/whetever shot you). More features, options and levels are planned; take a look at Malcolms web page for more information. One small point: being a pre-release, there are still bugs. Malcolm notes one in particular in the readme.txt file, so make sure to backup any important files before you try this out. Update (Niklas): Malcolm has released an Arena 3D SDK (sort of) with everything you need to create your own levels.

This game is truely amazing; I believe it could justly be dubbed the best 3D game (assuming the project doesn't stop here).
However, there have been a couple of wierd bugs. When I got the program I exec'd it using PreOS/TICCT Explorer (upon which the program should work; and it did). However, on certain occasions, the program mysteriously crashed. Yes, the error is replicable, but not all the time.
If you start the game (no particular preferences; any will do), the game might freeze momentarily and then...Die in Disgrace.
With PreOS running, it intercepts the crashes; however, its still a crash.
Not to say the program is bad; indeed, for an early stage, it should by extol'd.
Well, hopefully the author gets the program done soon; I'm hoping for more weapons (comeon, MP4s all the time get pretty dull). In addition, I find that on occassion, bots can fire from nowhere. You can't really see your enemy, even if you hit the "find shooter" key.

To everyone still following this post, despite the numerous offtopic replies...
If you are having problems running Arena 3D, I've found the 3 most common causes, thanks to comments I've received.
- You are missing a required file (there are 7 of these). This could be
because 'a3dmaps' is missing, for example.
- You moved the game from the "arena" directory to something different. This
problem could happen if the game was in 'arena3d' instead of 'arena', for
example. The sending software should put it in the right directory, and then
just leave it there.
- You don't have enough RAM free. However, about 100k is enough, so check the first two problems first.

Damn cool game, I tried it in VTI on the 92+.
Just a little OT question
I was thinking about selling my TI-89 and getting a V200 instead of that one because of the larger screen, larger archive memory and qwerty keyboard. Is it a sensible idea or should I forget and keep my 89?

I am having trouble with the keys on a TI-89. I can find the fire key, which for some reason is 2nd no matter what I do in the Options, but I can't find any of the other keys such as strafe and hit find. Also, the enemies seem to be able to fire through the walls.

2nd - A - default fire key
Diamond - B - default strafe key
Home - C
X - D
Shift - E - hit find key
alpha - F - speed up key
MODE - G
Y - H
I just tried changing the fire key in the options, and I had no problem. The letter in the parentheses refers to A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H; but those letters correspond to 2nd,diamond, home,x,shift, alpha, mode,y.
Hope this helps,
Malcolm
