Gemini RT3D game released for the TI-83 Plus
Posted by Niklas on 21 August 2002, 22:08 GMT

Hans Törnqvist has released Gemini, a real-time 3D raycasting game for the TI-83 and TI-83 Plus (available for Ion and MirageOS ). Features include a background story (!), textures, pushable walls and various enemies, items and weapons, all packed in a huge 23Kb program file.

Also included is some documentation on how to use this game's engine for your own game as well as a discussion of programming methods, shortcuts, and general tips for other programmers. :)

Update (Niklas): A TI-83 version has been added to the archives.

Looks cool, but the batteries in my 83+ are dead and I'm not gonna take the ones from my 89. Especially now that <expletive deleted> is starting soon, I need my best calc to be ready. Guess I'll have to buy some new ones(batteries).

What, are we supposed to laugh @ that.?

~Very inventive though.~I'd give it 2 thumbs up in the programming world. >:-B

You can laugh if you want, or if you don't get it you can just stare blankly at the screen :-). I actually didn't make it up, I saw it on a shirt for sale at thinkgeek.com. They have some pretty cool stuff, I'm just afraid of what will happen to me at school if I wear something from there.

Dudeski! What blew me away was actually the textures. An O.O production in the very most.

A possible expander??

I have read about the Expander II and like the idea of it and have thought about making a 1M :-) version it wouldn't be an extended RAM, but like a very large FLASH ROM type thing. Is anyone even interested in this idea?

people with 83+ might be interested, but anyone with a 83+ SE shouldn't really have a use for another meg of ROM - we've already got 1.5, and though it could be filled, you would have to download a lot of pointless junk in addition to anything good (like downloading every game in the ion file 0_o)

You can't use all of it for archive anyway, TI reserved some for Apps. Maybe someone should make a flash App that allocates more Flash ROM than it needs and stores normal programs in that space, so all of the Flash ROM can be used to hold normal programs. I also heard that Mirage 2.0 is coming out, if that is true will there be an option to copy games into RAM when you run them, instead of unarchiving them then rearchiving them when done? It would be quicker and less demanding of the Flash ROM chip.

MirageOS 1.1 already CAN copy programs into RAM in order to run them, it's in the options menu. You should read the manual.

Question:
When I put Gemini for MirageOS on my calc, and I tried to run it, it just went immediately back to Mirage! And when I tried to send the Ion version to my calc, it said there was an error in transmission.
Does anyone know what's going on?

You need to free up some space on your calc. Mirage doesn't give any warning if the program is too large - it just quits. Have at least as much space (in RAM!) available as the program is large (add some extra space is just in case)

Question on Ion OS download.
1. When its sent to the calculater it was grouped and I ungrooped it. Did I need to do that.
2. I ran the Ion program and it said it was done, but it didn't go into any menus or stuff. (I don't even know if there are any because there are no screen pics that I can find,
3. Then when its done none of the stuff runs. I click program A it just says done zminfo says err

4 . What am I doing wrong? (I got mirage to work I just want to try ion too.)

Would it be possible to convert this awesome game to a 32k application and have a bunch of more features? (computer console, gun turrets, etc.)

Does TI-Connect's USB cable not work with Windows XP?

The USB cable would not install properly when I ran the install process, so I had to try to install it using Control Panel on the computer. This didn't work, but merely gave me the message of:

"The software you are installing for this hardware:
Texas Instruments SilverLink (USB Graphlink) Cable has not passed Windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP."

"Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing."

How do I install it?

GREAT GAME! Incredible. Couldn't believe my eyes. Etc.

Unfortunately, it crashes on exit when I have played for a few minutes (Ti-83, Ion). Does anyone else have the same problem?
