Gemini RT3D game released for the TI-83 Plus
Posted by Niklas on 21 August 2002, 22:08 GMT

Hans Törnqvist has released Gemini, a real-time 3D raycasting game for the TI-83 and TI-83 Plus (available for Ion and MirageOS ). Features include a background story (!), textures, pushable walls and various enemies, items and weapons, all packed in a huge 23Kb program file.

Also included is some documentation on how to use this game's engine for your own game as well as a discussion of programming methods, shortcuts, and general tips for other programmers. :)

Update (Niklas): A TI-83 version has been added to the archives.

I downloaded it, but I have not played it yet...
Anyway, what makes Ti-Calc want to put a game in the spotlight like this? I know there are many great games and programs out there that never get their own news item....It kinda seems unfair.....

This is not just a great game, it is absolutely INCREDIBLE!!! Especially for the 83/+. It is like the FAT engine for the 89, what makes that so special?

Why they posted

The reason they posted it in the news was because it is the best game for the 83+ ever made(not joking). It has the best graphics, longest gameplay, and u never get bored with it, unless u beat it maybe. I heard about GEMINI from kozak, my friend from www.maxcoders.com and he recommended i try it a while ago and i did and it is awesome! Then a couple days later, the author submitted it to ticalc.org and when i saw it up there, i emailed news@ticalc.org suggesting they post a news item about it because it is a revolutionary new game that brings the 83p into the 3d, good graphics world. And then i saw they agreed cus they posted this news item about it. It isnt too large, because if you keep all your other games in archive, u will still have enough ram for one prgm at a time in ram. This is the best game ever made for the 83+ and there isnt anybody who can say otherwise and be sane at the same time. Oh, and i am trying to get the word out about an emulator that comes with a rom image at http://83p.tigalaxy.com/emulators.html (my site) for everyone out there who doesnt have a calc or cant get a rom image from their calc, so please spread the word.

1) That's illegal
2) TI offers their Flash Debugger, and you don't need a ROM image to use it.
3) It sux though (The TI one)
4) You can run any app in the TI-FD, even ones signed for another calc id.

It isnt illegal. It comes with an emulator to test code on and that is what u use it for when u run programs on it.

It is illegal to download a ROM image from anyone other than TI. It is even illegal to download the TI's flash debugger from anyone other than TI (it doesn't matter that it's a free download). The only emulator that is 100% legal is one from TI.

Normal emulators are generally acceptable to most companies as long as they are: a. for personal use only; b. not distributed with ROM's; and c. the ROM your using is from a system you've purchased. They generally fall under fair use laws (like copying your own CD to MP3 for personal use without redistributing).

Illigality
Rejun2000  Account Info

unless a law has changes recently, I have some insight to provide.

1) A Rom is only Illegal if you do not have a legit version of the item.

This may not be true of calcs though... I haven't read the law recently but it may only apply to console games (PS, Nintendo, etc.)

It isnt illegal because TI created it and put it for free download on their official site(www.education.ti.com) and TI included the rom image built in with the emulator.

It is 100% legal because TI created the emulator and made it avaliable for free download from their official site(www.education.ti.com) and so it is perfectly legal.

Actually, unless you download it from TI directly, it IS illegal. TI has not licensed ANYONE else to distribute the emulator. If you have it available for download on your site, you're breaking the law.

No, because I have a link to the page on education.ti.com where the file is for download, so it isnt illegal.

If you read their license agreement, it says that you can only download it FROM THEM, not a link that points to their site... meaning that if a person gets it without agreeing to this agreement (by following a direct link to the file, or the page where the file can be downloaded which skips the agreement), they have illegally obtained the ROM.

I know, and thats why i linked to their html page, because their html page that displays information about the emulator has the link to the aggreement which takes you to the download page, so it is perfectly legal.

ah... well then... that's ok.
if you linked directly to the file or to the download page, then you'd be breaking the law... but what you did is fine.

1) Yes, it is illegal
2) I didn't know that.
3) Wouldn't be surprised
4) What's TI-FD?
5) Why did I post this message like this?
6) Anyway, there ARE illegal sites out there to download ROM images for VTI (or any other emulator) but PLEASE don't do it 'cuz it's bad. ;-)

Yes, there must be a horrible bias in favor of programs written by previously unknown programmers from Sweden...

Platinum is rather cool, but I personally prefer the original.
