Back on Telia
Posted by Magnus on 30 May 2002, 10:47 GMT

In preparations for the possible (probable?) death of KPNQwest, ticalc.org has been temporarily moved back to the old Telia connection. This will once again cauase short downtimes as DNS servers refresh, and it will cause the speed to go back to what it was before.

This is a temporary solution. Final solution will be made sometime after we know for sure what will happen to KPNQwest.

Update (Magnus): KPNQwest has now died. The future of their network and customer contracts are still unknown.

Current status is that they may not die after all. We'll see. If they don't die, we'll switch back to get to the higher bandwidth.

So that's why the archive hasn't been updated! How can I help with the Archives? Will the archives be updated under tequila or whatever its called?

That's part of the reason. The other part is that I'm busy with school this (and next) week, but I should have enough time over for the archives.

And I had just gotten under 200 pending files, too... ;)

I'm done with school tomarrow. :) But it doesn't matter what kind of connection it is as long as you don't totally shutdown. That would not be good.

It was that 'Worship Michael Vincent' religion in the Chessmaster post, I believe. Michael was wondering about the 'interest' in him -- the poster interested in Michael blamed it on his brother.

How do you know if they're not going to die? Unless you're God or something, nothing lives forever, at least not here. So, do you mean like after a couple months or something you will switch back?

no he said that if KPNQwest doesn't die, then they would switch back. What I am asking is on what kind of a timeline do you determine they're not going to die?

So... how often do you say stuff like that without meaning forever? Never? Once? You don't know? So.. you were just trying to point out something only a smart-aleck would care to point out just because it left out a technicality?

umm, not really... KPN was something like 11 mbps, while telia is 6 mbps. about half, but it dosen't really matter to me, uness I am reading posts with 600 or so comments

You know, you can switch DNS without any downtime. tinydns supports timestamps for records. You can set it to serve one IP for the time before the switch, and another IP after the switch. It will dynamically adjust the TTL records that it serves, so that caches correctly cache it, and always have fresh data.

Re: Re: Re: Back on Telia

I should also mention that the other solution is to simply use five second TTL times on records. If your normal TTL length is one day, then you need to switch to five seconds at least one day beforehand (to give any already cached records a chance to expire).

Well or you could just leave a one-day overlap in hosting services (probably not possible with ticalc.org though). I just did that with a new Radical Software server.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Back on Telia

Sure, you can do that when you have the luxury of two uplinks going into your data center. Simply add the new IP addresses to the servers, update the DNS, wait a day or two, then remove the old IP addresses and change the default route. You have to do this if you must change the IP addresses for all the name servers for domains and don't want any downtime (and more importantly, don't want to chance losing any mail due to stupid MTA's).
