Volunteer Screenshot Staff Pulls Through
Posted by Morgan on 11 September 2004, 09:04 GMT

That's right, this summer's volunteer screenshot staff did an unbelievable job. The response I got was truly overwhelming. I actually wish never to send that many emails again in my life. However it was well worth it for ticalc.org. As a group we accomplished many things this summer whilst screenshotting the archives, including:

  • Creating and adding over 21,000 screenshots to the archives
  • Outfitting all ASM / Flash / OS files with screenshots (excluding libs and routines)
  • Surpassing a total of 50,000 screenshots on ticalc.org overall

The goal when we started this summer was to make another dent in the archives, much like we did last year. Never did I even think we would have produced as we have! And just as last year, we had an Aussie leading the pack. A big thanks goes to Tim McMahon for doing many of the BASIC files none of us would have done!

Initially the motivational idea I came up with was to offer community service hours, but not too many people were interested in this. So I asked them what they would like as prizes and they came up with some interesting ideas. In addition to CS hours there were two main prizes, to be given to the top two providers. The winner would have the choice of free hosting space on ticalc.org (as long as the site follows our guidelines) or a gift certificate at a certain value anywhere they wanted online. Second place would get what was left over. In addition, as a motivation to keep myself screenshotting, anyone who submitted more screenshots than I would get the same gift certificate. Finally, anyone who submitted more than 40 programs worth of screenshots would get a free @ss.ticalc.org e-mail forwarding address. These have not been set up yet, but will be soon. Thank you Magnus for implementing this and to NickD and Andy Selle for the idea!

So who exactly helped out with this project...well I am glad you asked:

All in all 12 people will be receiving @ss.ticalc.org e-mail forwarding addresses and two individuals expressed interest in CS hours. Tim will also get the award for beating me :-)

As you can see, we had lots of help! I just want to thank everyone who helped one last time, mostly just for putting up with all my annoying e-mails! On behalf of the ticalc.org staff, Thank You.

Thank you all volunteers! If it wasn't for you, only 4 of my programs would have pictures. but now, all of them have pictures! and with them, I got much more downloads from others and got moved up in the list! if only i wasn't so busy most of the time, i would have tried to help too.

Here's a big thank you to Tim! You did a massive amount of work, on a less-than-popular directory; thank you very much for your effort.

BASIC doesn't *have* to be bad, I agree. But, in all honesty, much of the BASIC programs in the ticalc archives aren't that good.
Anyway, let's not turn this into (another) "BASIC sucks \ does not \ does to"-'discussion'. Let's just congratulate and thank the people who made a hell of a lot of screenshots over the summer. My head started spinning after just 200 or so shots, so I really wonder how Tim and Morgan pulled of thousands of shots without going insane (hmmm, or did they? *evil grin*).

*bows*
I'm not about to say that "Basic" itself sucks, as it's a very useful language. However, a lot of Basic programs in the archive do suck. ;-P
- The Never Ending Snake...
- Pokemon...
- Nibbles v2thousand
- Zeld..(ehe)
& and any program that imitates the TI OS Menus and just does the same thing. (I only found 30 of them)

Basic programs should only be uploaded when they're complete, original (alteast in code), bug free. Oh, and don't put in useless intros: Screenwipes, Textscrolling... They've nothing to do with finding the angle of a triangle.

Well my part was *almost* all of the 86 basic files (the games and math and some of the misc then I got tired and quit) of yes many people don't know how to prgm in basic and one file had like ten thousand things to put on your calc to get it to work and this tired me out very quickly dealing with these files and that is why I stopped in the middle of the contest (another reason was Tim's 1000 programs done at that time)

Re: BASIC section elitism

I get kind of annoyed when I see all the poor-quality BASIC games clogging up the 83+ basic games section (making it a very long wait to load with dialup), because they lower the value of the higher-quality games (like mine hehe). I think it would be nice to be able to sort by rank, so each review or something would be a smiley or frowny face instead of a star, or depending on the rating, like maybe you have to rate it to review it. Then you could choose to filter out all the programs that are less then 5 (the frowny face ones), or something like that.

But still, that's 2 out of 21,026 screenshots: only a 9.512E-7 % error rate. :-)

Or would it be better to find the "screenshotted program" error rate than the screenshot error rate?

That was a definite mess up. Thx for pointing it out. Yes I am human, and a lot of this weas done in the wee hours of the night/morning when I may have not been thinking well.

In addition to the screen shot problem, the program to dowload is not a "zip" file...it's an "ASM" file...Can't people follow directions???

Actually you won;t be able to upload .asm files anymore. IF you want you can try. If it goes through you can delete it from the Manage author Information section under your account.

I'll admit I visit ticalc.org randomly at best these days, but to come here and see this news at the top of the page was truly heartening. Thank you to everyone who even contributed a single screenshot; you've been working to give this site the amazing collaborative spirit it's always had.
