Volunteer Screenshot Staff Pulls Through
Posted by Morgan on 11 September 2004, 09:04 GMT

That's right, this summer's volunteer screenshot staff did an unbelievable job. The response I got was truly overwhelming. I actually wish never to send that many emails again in my life. However it was well worth it for ticalc.org. As a group we accomplished many things this summer whilst screenshotting the archives, including:

  • Creating and adding over 21,000 screenshots to the archives
  • Outfitting all ASM / Flash / OS files with screenshots (excluding libs and routines)
  • Surpassing a total of 50,000 screenshots on ticalc.org overall

The goal when we started this summer was to make another dent in the archives, much like we did last year. Never did I even think we would have produced as we have! And just as last year, we had an Aussie leading the pack. A big thanks goes to Tim McMahon for doing many of the BASIC files none of us would have done!

Initially the motivational idea I came up with was to offer community service hours, but not too many people were interested in this. So I asked them what they would like as prizes and they came up with some interesting ideas. In addition to CS hours there were two main prizes, to be given to the top two providers. The winner would have the choice of free hosting space on ticalc.org (as long as the site follows our guidelines) or a gift certificate at a certain value anywhere they wanted online. Second place would get what was left over. In addition, as a motivation to keep myself screenshotting, anyone who submitted more screenshots than I would get the same gift certificate. Finally, anyone who submitted more than 40 programs worth of screenshots would get a free @ss.ticalc.org e-mail forwarding address. These have not been set up yet, but will be soon. Thank you Magnus for implementing this and to NickD and Andy Selle for the idea!

So who exactly helped out with this project...well I am glad you asked:

Tim McMahon has informed me that he will be accepting the free hosting space and thus Mike Bear will get the gift certificate for his second place finish. We will keep you posted on Tim's site plans. All in all 12 people will be receiving @ss.ticalc.org e-mail forwarding addresses and two individuals expressed interest in CS hours. Tim will also get the award for beating me :-)

As you can see, we had lots of help! I just want to thank everyone who helped one last time, mostly just for putting up with all my annoying e-mails! On behalf of the ticalc.org staff, Thank You.

LOL, according to the actual ranking I was in 6th place, but with the alphabetical order, I thought I was in 4th for a sec. :)

No...you wil be geting one...what I was trying to say was that 12 people signed up for the accounts..not that the top 12 recieved them. As soon as Magnus inputs them we should be good to go.

What big prize? If you are talking about the one for those who beat me, then no I never mentioned what it was to the ss staff. I didn;t think anyone was going to beat me...but when you make 6 ss per program... :-)

Anyway since I had not idea how many would accomplish this I wasn;t going to say what it was till the end...just kind of a way to save my own butt. In the end I left it up to Tim to decide what he wanted for beating me.

The screenshots of BASIC programs are especially useful (mostly for the games), because otherwise it's hard to tell whether it's the occasional *good* BASIC game (like V-Factor) or one of the usual crappy ones.

I must apologise for about 10 basic games that I did where I didn't remove the Axis for the screenshots. ;-P
I think they were mostly RPG....

You shouldn't *have to* remove the axes - the program should do it by itself. :-)

Very true. Leaving the axes on only testifies to the quality of the game, thus deterring n00bs from downloading it and freaking out when it doesn't look like the screenshot when they run it.

Re: BASIC sshots

I saw one sshot that was only the axes. Also, I find it annoying that I am not allowed to replace the bad animated sshots of my games that I made with the nice ones (which I spent a while making) that aren't half as fast as in real life, and too long, and with gray replacing black. How hard could it be to replace a screenshot?

Finally! I have been waiting for news on this for a while now. This is great. Hopefully one day, every program will have at least one screen shot. With people envolved like this, I think that that could be true one day.
