TI-89 Titanium Now Available
Posted by Michael on 17 June 2004, 00:32 GMT

[TI-89 Titanium] Several readers have written in that the TI-89 Titanium has become available after June 1. There still is not widespread distribution, but you can buy one from amazon.com or Beach Audio, among other places. You can read our previous news article for more information about the 89 Titanium.

The TI-84 Plus (not SE) is also now available - I saw it in a Staples store near me.

I saw the TI-84 (not plus) at Best Buy the other week. It didn't have a price tag or anything on it though so I don't know how much it was selling for.

Tell that Best Buy to check the name (see link-no TI-84's (no plus), only 84+ and 84+ SE).

no actually, that was my mistake. I meant to say, "TI-84+ (not Silver Edition)".

I have been drooling over this 89ti ever since I heard about it. I am going into geometry next year, so would it be pointless for me to fork over the cash for this baby? I already got an 83+.

It is a little over-kill for geometry, rookie. Get it anyway, just for the "cool factor" or the "hedious factor" depending on which camp you are in. The thing is pretty gaudy in a cool way.

Just got my 89t last weekend from Best Buy, they had lots of them. It's VERY nice. It's just missing one thing, games. None of them work, I can't get DoorsOS or any shells to install, etc. I'm guessing the OS 3.00 is too new, am I right?? Someone help! I want to play "Space Monkey Quest"!!!!!!!! :)

DoorsOS was obsolete long before the Titanium was released. The only kernel likely to currently work on the Titanium is "TitaniK" which is being worked on by Kevin Kofler. It is based on PreOs and is not yet complete.

By the way, there are approximately 400 TI-89 games in the ticalc.org archives that don't need any kernel (or "shell" as some people like to call them) to run.

Actually, TitaniK probably won't stay maintained for much longer. Most programs need to be patched by hand to work with it, the patches are too complex for an automated patcher. It is also very slow for dynamically-linked library calls. And there's an alternative: a HW3Patch is ready for testing, which can get conventional kernels to run (PreOs has yet to be ported though, I need to separate a few small changes out of the huge TitaniK changeset, or maybe Patrick Pélissier (PpHd) will port it himself). The programs will still need patches, but only the small patches also needed for "nostub" (kernel-independent) programs, and ExtendeD and myself are working on an automated patcher (almost ready).

That PreOs port is now available. It goes by the name "Iceberg".

By the way, it just so happens that the current versions of most of my TI-89 games have been tested on the Titanium and worked fine.

I suspect that Smiley's Adventure is actually the only game of mine that won't run properly on the Titanium. Although untested, I expect it would run at 2/3 the intended speed there. But at least it will not crash (I hope).

I had the thing crash on a reg. 89 (VTI if that matters). All I am trying to say is that it will most likely crash on you in the future.

Try BomberMaze (BomberMan clone). I had a little trouble getting the levelset onto my calc using TI Connect but I had no trouble loading it with GraphLink. The game itself is a near exact copy of the original GameBoy game (it's been a while but it seems just like it).

SMQ is one of the rare kernel-based games that are actually running already. See the link to "TitaniK - a kernel for the TI-89 Titanium" at my web page above.

Will that Titanik thing be able to run any kernel program on a 89ti?

No, but its successor Iceberg (now in public beta-testing) will. :-) See the Custom Beta Tests section at the TICT HQ message board for news from the Titanium Compatibility Strike Force. :-)
