TI-84 Plus Now Available
Posted by Michael on 26 April 2004, 04:28 GMT

Breaking news just in: The TI-84 Plus is now available through most channels for purchasing. TI has also created a new website to promote the new 84 product line: 84silver.com.

It appears that the 84 Plus Silver Edition is not yet available (you can pre-order from several places though), only the 84 Plus for now. If you are looking for a place to buy one, check Froogle.

Screen Size (Strange)
jvdthwip Account Info

I went to the 84 silver website and they had custom start up graphics pic for download, I clicked on one and saw it was strangely square...

I copied it nto paint and found that the screen dimensions are:

92 x 68

Thats Thinner AND taller than the 83 plus, which means that 83 plus Basic progs, assembly progs, et cetera, may not work on the device...

I'm taken aback...

Thay just added that so you can see the key presses a little easier. Besides, why would they add a speaker? IT would be a teacher's worst nighmare...

i have questions about the USB port. saying that you could transfer programs to the 84+ from the 83+, could you do it calc to calc or would you have to do it via a computer because the 83+ doesnt have the USB. or does TI plan on coming out with a 2.5 mm adapter. personally i dont see the need for the USB. i havent noticed any exceedingly long wait times to transfer programs to my calcuator anyways. i think i will wait for the 89 titanium (even though i just bought an 89, seems like kind of a waste)

I believe the 84+ has a USB on top and a standard plug on the bottom...

Apparenlty the calculator is intellegent and can determine which linkport is active.

The GetCalc( function also allows you to specify if you want to use the USB, regular linkport, or let the calculator decide.

Actually one could daisy-chain them to make a multiplayer game for quite a few people.

It'd be very slow though. :-)

I thought about that...it actually wouldn't necessarily be slow.

The game would probably be the limiting factor rather than the link speed.

But if you were to link a very large number, the calcs in the middle have to begin to route a lot of stuff back and forth.

Of course, if the regular linkport has a DBUS like the SE and the USB port has something similar, it might be doable.

Of course it depends on the game. I was thinking ZTris but allowing for quite a few players - link communication only needs to occur for sending lines, and there's plenty of wait time to be handling link communication.

Even without...

Assume that you can send a paltry 3000 bytes per second. How much does a packet of information for a game take?

Probably not even 10 bytes - It'd take 3 one-thousandths of a second. I see no reason why, for most games, you couldn't link together upwards of 10 calculators (assuming say a 1/10th second delay is acceptable).

If both ports are on top, how does the TI Keyboard connect to it? Do you use the kickstand that comes with the 84 and connect it on top with the cable from the keyboard kickstand?

The cable in the keyboard kickstand cannot be removed. So, you would need to get a nice, long cable and use it.

I wonder if the OS has keyboard support... I would be surprised if it didn't.

Huh? One of my friends has a TI-Keyboard, and the cable is removable. We even removed it to test my CalcChat program.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: TI-84 Plus Now Available

The cable can be removed from the cradle; however that won't help you, because
(a) the calculator won't fit into the cradle
(b) the cable won't fit into the calculator
So you need to get a standard link cable.

well thats very good to know because some people (like me) may have found a USB only link port to be a disadvantage

Isn't the Titanium the same price as the 89?

Unless you don't already have a TI-89.

Try not to jump to conclusions. The calc has both link ports, and is the same price as a regular TI-89. It also has more flash memory, and more preloaded apps (not that I care about the preloaded apps).

That's why if you don't have an 89, wait for the Titanium to come out.
