TI-84 Plus Now Available
Posted by Michael on 26 April 2004, 04:28 GMT
Breaking news just in: The TI-84 Plus is now available through most channels for purchasing. TI has also created a new website to promote the new 84 product line: 84silver.com.
It appears that the 84 Plus Silver Edition is not yet available (you can pre-order from several places though), only the 84 Plus for now. If you are looking for a place to buy one, check Froogle.

Someone pointed out in the HP release article that it was merely copying slashdot. Well, this time slashdot appears to have posted an article on the 84+ after ticalc.org. Im curious if Ticalc's hit count will be higher today than usual, after a slashdot article about a new ti, although there was no ticalc link on /.

I won't buy it. TI must develop a better screen. The TI-81, purchased first in 1990, had/has the same screen.
It needs at least 200x135 on the same area.
I think TI must introduce a color (e.g. red, green & blue) or, like in RIGview, a greyscale screen to persuade me buying the TI-84 plus.
If they don't do that I will buy a TI-83 Plus S.E.

200x130, are you nuts!?!
I don't even know if expensive laptops could achieve that kind of resolution.
I don't have a ruler with me, but I think the current dpi is close to 1400. A 200 by 130 would require a dpi close to 6000. I might have seen a color lcd with a dpi of 7200 (or was this the dpi of a photograph printer), but that kind of quality would become quite costly.
personally, I think that 120 by 80 would be more likely (about 2000 dpi with current screen). Besides, you would at leas want the same aspect ratio. The current aspect ratio is 3:2, the one you chose is 20:13, so the graphics would seem a little flat.
Furthermore, memory quickly becomes an issue. Currently, the TI83 has 32k of RAM (24k is user while 8k is system). The current display uses 768 bytes. Black and white 200x130 would need 3250 bytes and 120x80 would need 1200 bytes. Adding color to the resolutions would have the following effect:
4 color (white, red, gree, blue) Multiply by 2
16 color multiply by 4
256 color multiply by 8
Both higher resolution and color would require either more RAM or less user space (and 24k isn't much to take away from). Adding a higher resolution color screen and more RAM would be expensive. I would say the price would almost double with all of the new hardware required.
With that said, I would be happy if they would just junk the old display driver and use one like in the 85 and above. The hardware would be a little more expensive, but not a whole lot more.

"Interactive analysis of function values, roots, maximums, minimums, integrals, and derivatives."
DOES THIS MEAN I CAN SYMBOLICALLY INTEGRATE?? I hope so. I need more than just fnInt! That would be awesome for my Calc BC final, cause the teacher won't let me use my 89.

I have a TI-83+SE, and MirageOS works fine on it.
But the thing I'm somewhat annoyed about is that the TI-81, 82, 83, 83+, 83+SE, 84+, and 84+ SE, and TI hasn't made the graphics any better. It's still the same 96x64 screen.
Faceplates, USB and a clock aren't really convincing enough for me to buy an 84.
