TI-84 Plus Now Available
Posted by Michael on 26 April 2004, 04:28 GMT

Breaking news just in: The TI-84 Plus is now available through most channels for purchasing. TI has also created a new website to promote the new 84 product line: 84silver.com.

It appears that the 84 Plus Silver Edition is not yet available (you can pre-order from several places though), only the 84 Plus for now. If you are looking for a place to buy one, check Froogle.

According to the official specifications published by TI, it runs at the same speed as a TI-83 Plus Silver Edition.

According to this link, the ti 84+se's processor is 2.5 times faster than the 83+'s.

Funny, until I actually went to the site, I thought the post was a joke!

You are talking about the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition where as he is referring to the normal TI-84 Plus. Here's the specs:

The 84+ has "2.5x the speed of the TI-83 Plus"
And the 84+ SE has "2.5x the speed of the TI-83 Plus"

So, the 84+ amd the 84+ SE have the same processor speed!

83-: 6 MHz
83+BE: 6 MHz
83+SE: 15 MHz
84+BE: 15 MHz
84+SE: 15 MHz
(BE means Black Edition.)
The 83+SE can be switched to 6 MHz for compatability with the 83+. I cannot guarantee anything about the 84+BE / 84+SE, but I'd be very surprised if they don't have this feature.

Hey, at least you use TI calculators. The guy next to me in my math class has a Casio graphing calculator O_o. It's huge...and blocky...and it's only 12 by 7 characters or so on the home screen...if you could call it a home screen...not really, since you get there through a menu.

I contacted TI about this and they told me, and I researched the same thing, that the TI-84se and ti-83se are exactly the same except for a few differences:
1. the 84se has a USB port
2. the 84se has a clock
3. the 84se comes with a few preloaded programs that the 83se doesn't, but you can download them anyways from TI.
4. the 84se has minor appearance differences.

so, there is no significant differences, unless you want a USB port. No speed or memory differences between the silver editions.

I wouldn't call the different appearance minor. It's much less rectangular, won't pack well. The link ports are both at the top. And the up and down arrows are connected, so it may not be possible to press both at once.

According to the website, though, the most important difference might just be that the Startup app is pre-loaded!

Couldn't somebody write a program so that the usb port for the TI 84 (P/PSE) could use it to connect to a 128mb memory stick? Cuz that would be very cool. Imagine all that memory. You could fit eBooks, like the HP calculators.

Less rectangular means harder to poke holes into backpacks. And why would you need to press both at once, anyways? You can only register it in ASM programs, and I can't see any reason to.

And Start-Up is preloaded on an 83+ SE. I've seen it from a friend's calculator. I even made a pic for him on it.

That's not the problem. The problem is that in pressing, say, the "Up" button, the "Down" button might also depress, therefore canceling out the keypress. Not much of a worry for normal use of the calculator, but if you plan to play games on your 84+/SE, it might be a problem.

You really don't need a 84+...just get an 89 or an 89Ti (Titanium)...at least, that's what I'm doing. The two calculators are only ten to thirty dollars apart, depending on where you get them, so the 89 would be a better investment, especially in advanced math classes.

Yes, but there is always that risk of an inadverdent RAM clear...so ASM programs and shells that can run from archive dont get lost. And, BASIC graphics can only go so far.

It's obviously not 100% compatible. It's not even, as they claim, 100% keystroke compatible, as there are additional functions, and the clock options on the mode screen.

Symbolic and Omnicalc almost certainly won't work.
