International Karate, Vector Space
Posted by Michael on 6 February 2004, 23:20 GMT

[International Karate]David Randall has released his high-kicking game, International Karate. It is a 89 replica of IK+ for the Commodore 64. There are sixteen different karate moves and a variety of options. In the future, there are plans for 92+/V200 ports and link play. Check this game out; it looks quite well done.
[Vector Space]Also, Paul Houser's Vector Space is a vector-based spacewars-like game for the 89/92+/V200. There is either AI mode or link play (which is reported to still have some bugs).

Man, do I hate my math teacher for recommending a TI-83 plus :(

My maths teacher recommended a casio graphing calc. It really sux, and it couldn't even find the intersects...

Naturally, I ignored him, and got myself a TI83+, and later a TI89. Interestlingly, this means that I have the most advanced calc in my school, (and it's only a HW1 TI89)

I have top of the line TI and HP calcs. As far as I know, there are only five or six other people with 89's and no one else with HP's.

I'm going to have to try IK89. It's looks pretty sweet.

I would get an HP...if I didn't already have a TI 89 and 83SE.

Anyways, I've never been much into the karate type games, but vector games- sweet! The screenshot tells all.

thanks... but the screen shot runs at about 30% of the calculator speed, I think you'll be impressed more by the actual game

Oh, International Karate! I love this game! But it's been out for a really long time. Of course, this new version was just out yesterday, I believe. This looks cool... since I played the game a lot before, I'll bet I'll like the updated version even more, so I'd better check this one out.

I noticed the version released yesterday - it looked cool. VectorSpace looks pretty neat, too. Yet another instance of how superior 68K calcs are!

Yes, they are far superior. I'm glad I got an 89

me too, seemed appropriot after recieving 89% total at the end of my math course. 94% on the provincial exam (Canadian system at end of grade 12 course, 40% of total mark, renders SAT type tests useless) was too good, lol, but I think I got 86% on coursework...

I thought there was already an international karate out?! Is this a new version? Because the old one was pretty cool.

Thanks! I have spent quite a bit of time fine tuning this release. Yes, this is an update to the previous version 0.5b. This release is much more true to the original.

How long have you been working on this game? It's really great. I like the background scenery. It adds a nice touch to the game.

I've been working on IK89 off and on for about 2 years. I tried to stay true to the original C64 game as much as possible. It has all of those background goodies: spider, bird, fish, worm, rippling water. You ought to check it out using CCS64 emulator.

I tried Vector Space, and I think it needs to use look-up tables. Overall, a really good game (and challenging).

w00t! Publicity!! Any suggestions people have on Vector Space would be awesome. (BTW, Link play works fine, I just tested it with my friend and I's calc, the problem was with VTI)

Okay. Vector Space looks really cool. I would reccomend adding grayscale, and maybe better graphics, though. The radar at the bottom left would look better, and less confusing.

I wonder if the 92+/v200 versions make use of the larger screen...

That reminds me, it would look better if the text were centered on the 92+/v200.

If someone could help me out with grayscale double buffering, I would add it, but that's the reason I decided not to use it.

Grayscale double-buffering is actually very easy if you take advantage of the Extgraph Library (available at the TICT homepage). The documentation for the library is very good as well.

Some more suggestions:

Make the keys for the V200 be HAND and Q.

Forget about making the game work on VTI.

Add pictures for the ships, instead of just shapes. You just need pictures going vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, then use reflection routines to display them in the other 8 directions. Or just use one picture and a rotation routine.

I have no idea how to do that, and it would take the whole "Vector" idea away. The ships truely are vector based.

Use vectors for the ship's trajectory, instead. ^_^

Bugs:

When you win, the calc occasionally turns off right before the "You Win!" screen.

When you win, the calc occasionally gives the errors 'Line 1111 Emulator', 'Address Error', or 'Internal Error'. All are fatal (crashes the calc).

Suggestions:

(To say what lord_nightrose would say) Have the calculator say "You win!" or "YOU WIN!" instead of "You Win!"

Allow you to quit to main menu using ESC from anywhere in the game.

Go to main menu instead of quitting when you win/lose.

Use _keytest(RR_ENTER_DPAD) as well as _keytest(RR_ENTER), so it'll work on 92+/v200. Also _keytest RR_2ND and RR_HAND, too.

Use arrow keys/enter instead of pressing number buttons in Main Menu. I (and most people) find it easier.

Allow customized keys, like the real Continuum. And make the playing field bigger, it practically defeats the purpose of having radar on such a small field.

Add 'Options', 'About', and 'Quit' to Main Menu; to make it look fancy. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. All of the features you suggested will definetely be the 1.0 version. Could you give me the circumstances of the fatal errors you are recieving? I've tested it thouroughly on my TI89 with AMS 2.09 and have found no problems.

The circumstances:

Voyage 200, AMS 2.08, HW2.

No TSRs. Command Post's Crash Guard doesn't work against it.

Usually happens when you win, and you've greened a lot. (as in, your recharge speed bar is longer than your health bar)

Oh geez, I know what the problem is. I never anticipated people picking so many packages up.
