Fire Track 2 for 83+
Posted by Michael on 10 January 2004, 02:16 GMT

[Fire Track 2]Benjamin Ryves has released Fire Track 2, based on the original Fire Track BBC Micro game. Besides the classic gameplay, his version features an "extended" mode with randomly generated levels and powerups: EMP, laser, shield, time freezer, kamikaze, and speed. This game appears to be very well planned out in its detail, and is available in both Ion and MirageOS versions.

Is that a glare at me, or the original game author?
I didn't invent the game... just wrote the TI version.
However, if that annoys you, play in extended mode...

Yeah, what he said.

Classic = autofire, 10 levels, no powerups
Extended = controlled fire, infinite random levels, powerups

Try reading the readme.

Very nice. I saw the game before it was featured and said "Why in the world is this incredible-looking game not featured??" But now it is and I'm happy.

Waiting for 83 version, using my bro's 83+ until then...

82 version in planning? If not, I'll probably port it over myself.

Yes please!
Please don't start yet - when I've finished the 83 'port' and released it you should use that source instead as it isn't so 83+ specific as the original, which should make your job a lot easier.

Ah, so you have an 82?
I've never programmed on an 82... I hope that if DWedit takes up the job he understands what I've done ;)

Whee, I have a TI-82, too, actually it's borrowed from my teacher but... yeah. :P

But everyone I know has a TI-83+, most of them have SE's, so I can get one easily enough.

Due to the memory hogging aspect of the game (it requires about 7K of free RAM to run!) the 82 port will probably be a long time in appearing. I've discussed it a little with DWedit -- 82 users might have to sacrifice some of the speed to get the game on their calculator.

Although I don't have a TI-83 (of ANY sort, including + and + SE), I still like the look of this game. The graphics are some of the best black and white graphics I've seen in a while. I didn't download the game (since I have no use for it).

This is an old shot, but it does show the graphics off quite well (it's the most recent animated one, only about 4 weeks old!) - (Click "Web Page" link).
The speed is quite inconsistent in the GIF -- if you save it to disk before running it that should give you a better idea of the smoothness of the graphics.

Or if you have a cable modem... in which case you shouldn't need to wait. These graphics are amazing. However, there's almost too much stuff to keep your eye on... that would probably confuse me... with all the graphics for the walls and stuff in the background... and then the enemies, their shots, and mine... but, like with all games, you get used to it after a few plays. It really does look nice. (I like ellipses)

Actually, I don't think the enemies shoot, just try to run in to you. But don't rely on me for that, as I have only made it to the 3rd level once on extended.

Nice and hard, the way I like it. And random levels add even more the replay value, besides the challenge of beating a high score.

Hehehe! What a sick mind you have...
No, the enemies don't shoot at you.
FT3 anyone? ;)
Not for a good while yet...

I'd be up for an FT3. Actually, my favorite top-down plane game of all time is the old game Raptor. That would absolutely kick butt on the 83/83+, and could possibly use a variation on the FT2 engine, except with powerups that only run out on , and enemies that shoot, and bosses, and buildings that shoot...

Ok, maybe not based on the FT2 engine. But it's a step closer!

Funny you should say that; Jonathon Janevski at Greenfire asked that I should modify the game afterwards to make a Raptor clone. I don't know the original game, however...
