TI-83 Plus SDK Released
Posted by Nathan on 30 October 1999, 07:17 GMT
Texas Instruments released the TI-83 Plus Software Development Kit. According to the FAQ, this allows software developers to program in Zilog Z80 assembly code. Listing technical specifications and user interface guidelines--as well as offering a "software simulator/debugger"--the SDK will allow programmers to create tight programs that are optimized and integrated with the TI-OS (presently, programmers have used incomplete, hacked TI-83 and TI-83 Plus information for programming). Available only in English, this free SDK will soon be followed by both educational and professional versions, which will allow programmers to write Flash applications which execute directly from the Flash ROM.

The calculator division of TI is quite small, and I'm sure the SDK was a HUGE drain on their resources. I figure they need people to buy the SDK to help make up for it. Anyhow, the professional SDK is for professionals--companies and such that create and sell programs for profit.
TI spent a LOT of time documenting everything, and I think it's fair that they offer development tools for free, and then offer Flash development tools for a charge. I know it's steep--but it's for the right to make money off of programs you write.
Anyhow, TI has the right to do whatever it wishes with it's software--you've all known for a long time they would charge for the professional versions of the SDK. I'd rather have the free tools than no tools at all. I think that if I'm too cheep to buy the professional SDK (and I am), I'll be happy with the free utils, or I'll start saving for the professional tools.
Who was it complaining that TI wants to control all programs? They don't do that at all. If you develop Flash Applications they have to be digitally signed by TI, but I think that is a security measure. And you get x many signings with the purchase of the SDK, anyhow.

At least TI released a SDK. That's progress. What TI should really do is release a header file with all function prototypes for the TI-89/TI-92+. It could be done with the minimum effort and would help alot.
PS: Mac users should click on the link above! (note: this is not my page)

80% of these comments are platform wars and only 20% are talking about the SDK's, does anyone see the irony in that.
P.S. Etec, you have spirit, keep up the fight with macs and pcs. We mac users need someone like you to point out the goods and bads of these computers.
Pikachu--I'm sure people want to start a new flame by now about something that is so ovious. Pokemon-mon-mon the first movie. Someones going to say Pokemon sucks, I just know it.
