TI Responds to Requests for TI-89 ASM Information
Posted by Nathan on 21 March 1999, 01:42 GMT

A letter was sent to Texas Instruments asking why the promised assembly information had not been released, and when it would be released, if at all. The response received follows.

*****,

Thank you for your e-mail.

Texas Instruments will be releasing the information on their web site. This information should be available Spring of 1999. I have listed the TI web site address below.

http://www.ti.com

If you have any further questions or comments please feel free to contact us at your convenience. Please copy this message in your response and send directly to ti-cares@ti.com for faster service on replies.

Kind regards,

John Onufreiczuk

exactly. ti didn't say anything. they've said this before, and they'll say this again. they make good calculators but they sure suck at support. (same thing with their laptop business).

About TI's Customer service ---
In addition to owning an 82 and an 86, I also have one of TI's PDAs. It's called the Avigo and it's also z80 based. When it broke down, I sent off an email to ti-cares and got a reply on the same day (I think it was a weekend, too). Mr. Onufreiczuk was extremely helpful and the support response was the fastest that any manufacturer has given to me. Never, when dealing with tech support for anything (including that $&*%# blender) have I had a fully working system within three weeks. After mailing my avigo in, still under warranty, I recieved a new one (with a fresh set of batteries and a new stylus to boot) a week and a half later. I don't know much about ASM, but it sounds like this information is quite a load of highly technical data. Is it possible that there has not been enough time to compile it all into a readable document?

unfortunately, even with a good company service varies greatly. perhaps i'd just heard all the horror stories. people do tend to remember bad much better than good.

as for then information, although it IS technical, it should have in no way shape or form taken this long. the issue is ti should have released this information long ago. it isn't fair to the programming community to withhold such important info.

TI CARES IS A LOAD OF SH*T!!!
^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^

When my TI-86's LCD broke I spent 2 weeks trying to find out what to do! The first week I spent e-mailing them with stuff of where I could get it repaired and they replied that they are the only ones who cn repair it. No number to call until I asked how can I get it repaired! When they finally gave me the 1-800 number (1 800 TI CARES), I spent the entire next week listening to a busy signal and they closed at 4PM PST!!! When I finally got through the following Monday I spent that week arguing with them as to what to do until they finally gave me an addresss to mail it in!!! It took almost 3 weeks just to find out where to mail it to and I mailed it that day. It has now been another 4 weeks and no word. Not to mention the $55 +S&H I had to pay for them to take my old 86, throw it in the trash and send me a new one, If I ordered a 86 from them directly (I don't know that they fill orders) it would have arived within the week... no doubt. So don't say that they have a good service department . The next petition should be to get a real service department !!!
by the way, at least make that 15 letter limit 20! It really pisses me off.

Yes, the TI-89 ASM information IS highly technical, but it is NOT information that they don't already have. To my knowledge, it is not possible to design a calculator with "built-in" ASM programming capabilities without designing how those capabilities will work at the same time, thus providing them with the information they need to release. If they are just now coming up with that information, the manager in charge of that department needs to be fired immediately and a check for at least $50 needs to be sent to everyone who has purchased a TI-89 to compensate for the extra amount of money we paid to get the 89 rather than something like the 85 or 86 expecting to get clear 89 assembly information. Plus, even if all of their assembly documentation was written in highly technical terms that would be hard for people to understand, the process of making it easier to understand should have been done during the development stage prior to the release of the calculator. I truly think that the ASM information should have been placed in the 89 manual along with the basic programming information. TI has no excuse to have delayed the release of the information for this long and have even less of an excuse to delay the release any further. TI is capable of releasing this information tomorrow. Unfortunately, as we all know very well, they will wait as long as possible. I recommend that the ticalc.org community organizes a boycott of all purchasing of new TI products and a huge bombardment of e-mails to their technical support address until they release the information that they already have.

Well, when the tip of my graphlink broke off, I emailed TI about and they said they would replace the link AND the calculator I was using it in in case the port had been damaged. I opted just to have the link replaced and about a week later, I got a brand new, re-designed graphlink with software for all the calculators. So don't go telling me TI doesn't have a good customer service department. The need to work on Product Support.

I once broke the tip of my graph too. My girlfriend didn't like it too much cause see couldn't play her favorite games. So I told I would mail Ti about it. The next week they sent me a redesigned *GrpahLink* with an extra looong tip for better downloading. This made me happy and my girlfriend extremly happy.

Re: Re: Re: Al contrario....

Well, perhaps it is a deal with them finally getting some things down, and others not. I would imagine having graphlink tips breaking off would be fairly common and they have a set procedure for it. They must just bumble around when it comes to new things for them. Just speculation though.

Re: Re: Al contrario....
dux gregis

happened to me too .. except my link broke off _inside_ my 86 link port. I sent them both in (without warranty for either) and ti sent me replacements for both in only about a week.

also, there is no reason why ti needs to delay to send this information, they simply have to take the information they used to program and make it pretty. It would take one person maybe a few hours and make a lot of people happy. And still, after almost 7 months of retail, no one has.

Linking
Piloter

Easy enuff to fix. Had a friend's cable-tip break off in his '85 and spent the next two periods tearing it down, popping the tip out, and putting back together...plus he could use it the same day, no shipping waits.

I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. When I sent an email to TI regarding assembly programming, they responded by saying that the information should be out within the next three weeks. That was 2 months ago :(

After deciphering what you said (maybe if you put some punctuations or cut out the run-ons), I believe you were mistaken, I think SMN was asking which email the petetion was send to because the guy who send this reply back to us doesn't seem to know what information we are asking for...

Just thought I would clear that up!
