[TI-83 Plus]

Texas Instruments has announced the TI-83 Plus graphing calculator. This is an upgradable calculator designed for high school and lower level university math and science courses. The TI-83 Plus includes all the features of the TI-83, and adds these features:

  • Flash ROM technology
  • 160K built-in Flash ROM (user data archive)
  • New applications developed by TI and other educational software developers

The TI-83 Plus is expected to cost about $5 or $10 more than the TI-83 and should be available this spring.

I think that the ti83 cant be upgraded, (I dont know, I dont have a 83 but 86) Last time I cheacked my ti8x it didnt have any area to upgrade. And have you seen the specs for the 83+ has less user mem then the 83 24k instead of 27k

And if they do come out with a 86+ I'm sure its not going to be an upgrade to the 86 but a new calc (this is just a waste of money) If you want a better calc then get a higher 8x calc then the one you have, unless you have a 92+

Uhm, the TI-83+ IS a new calculator. You dont upgrade your old one, you have to buy a new one.

83+ 24k user mem... 83 27k....
seriously, don't you think that's small amount?
mem shouldn't be too expensive to add, why isn't TI doing just that? This kinda reminds me of the 80'ies.... in a bad way.

The 83+ has, or will have, an additional 160k of Flash ROM. I think it works like the 89 flash ROM.

Hey stupidass.... read your facts....the ti-83+ has 24K mem + 160K rom GEE....IF WE ADD 24K AND 160K, WE GET 184K MEMORY...WAS THAT SO HARD?????

Re: Re: Re: Re: TI announces TI-83 Plus graphing calculator

The ROM can ONLY be used for storing information and applications. Once there it CAN'T be edited unless it is copied back to the RAM. (Since most Flash ROMs can only be erased in 16k chunks (but I guess that thats to hard for you to understand MORON))

and btw, since the z80 can't adress more than 64k of memory, ti would need to implement memory bank switching in order to increase the amount of RAM, and therefore they would need to make a much more complicated OS to handle the memory... and then we would get a TI86...

What's your point? You're not supposed to edit games.

I just came up with an idea. You can't send more than 24K to the calc, right? (You can't send directly to the archive.) So you send the programs in 24K chunks. Ahh.

I see all this pissing and moaning over "I just bought an 83 and now they have an 83 plus", and it makes me think "Yeah, I'm glad I have hands and and oversized winter coat."

I think I rolled a 20.

ugghd..no what?
I'm sure many of us here in the TI community pirate software. Well I don't see that much difference between that and getting a five finger discount on a calc.

But pirating software is illegal.. you shouldn't do that.. *s* And a five finger discount is wrong.. *snicker*

Well that's not exactly the same... you should know that by now.
I'm not saying TI should pay something to everyone who bought a TI-83. What i'm saying to them is invent something new, this SUCKS.

OH YEAH........ and every company that has ever released something a little better than a previous product should reimburse people who bought the older product... well life doesnt work that way, if anyone isnt happy about ti releasing the ti-83 tough shit, they are just another company releasing new products.

prefer new prods more than old shit

anyway, this conversation of TI-83+ has lasted too long already. i won't spend my money on this crap, but if someone wants, let it be so.

i can understand where people are mad that they just bought the 83, but if there was an exchange program, then everyone who bought any old calc would want to trade it in towards a newer better one, there would be too much hassle to do it

This is not good. Ti has updated the Ti-92, and is moving on to updating the Ti-83. Once this is done and people are either satisfied or upset, it's likely that they'll update the 85. Or maybe the 86. Whichever it is, Ti is probably going to update all of the "better" calcs and make the originals obsolete. Just wait. In another 6 months, they'll come out with the Ti-86 plus. Or maybe sooner.

I know a lot of people (David) that will be very happy to know that TI is making an 86+ calculator that has the Flash Upgradable ROM. Why do you criticise TI for moving into the future? I like what TI is doing, it is the next logical step to build up it's company and head for the future.

I wouldn't call adding one new part/few years and releasing just the same product again and again moving into the future.
If this is your future, blinking screens and out of space, then let it be... I want something new.
And for that TI-86+ ...makes me wanna cry.
TI used to rock but now they're probably just out of money.(as it seems-)

Ti cannot head for the future simply by updating it's previous calcs and selling them as "pluses".
They need to develop entirely new calcs...

And if they're going to make an 83+, why couldn't they have made normal 83's capable of being updated?

Since they didn't, Ti definately should have made a new calc. Whenever a calculator is "plussed", the original version becomes obsolete. Not worthless - obsolete. All attention will focus on the updated calc. Unless, however, people don't purchase it. (I would never suggest anything...)

Oh, and anybody who likes the idea of paying another $95+ for an 86+ say so below.

It's been a week since I posted that message. It doesn't look like many people feel like buying a Ti-86+ when they already have a Ti-86.

Lets all get Casio calcs then, until TI discontinures the 83+ then...

really, I don't think TI has a monopoly. If you don't like TI, get a Casio, or an HP. Of course, then we would have to kill you, but hey, you are not giving TI the business! 8-)

Re: Re: Re: Re: TI announces TI-83 Plus graphing calculator

hehe=)

nope, casio sucks. so does hp, and they're expensive.
I prefer TI clearly best, but if they clown around with old stuff maybe Casio etc. will get better... who knows.
I just hope TI will realize this, so they can keep their #1 place. This would, of course, need doing something new sometimes.

I don't know about Casio, but the HP calc's kick TI calc's butts. The HP's are just for a different market. The 48G (I think thats the right #) is the best business/work calc. TI's are desighned fo school.

Re: Re: Re: Re: TI announces TI-83 Plus graphing calculator
Fed Up

Okay, everybody stop ripping on TI. Do you see any other companies out there who sell a calculator that is as versitile? HPs are impossible to use, and Casios aren't worth it. Sure, they need to come out with some more calculators, but that takes time. They came out with the 89!!!!!
Anyway, the TI-83 wasn't that great of a calc anyway. Go for an 85 or above, especially if you are in High School or above .
SO, stop bitc*ing about it. If there was no TI, this site wouldn't be here, and you'd find something else to bit*h about. Cut TI some slack, they're doing the best they can. And they're doing a pretty good job at it too!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: TI announces TI-83 Plus graphing calculator

TI used to rock, but this is smelling like cashing out people nowadays. Why does every other company develop better and better products but not TI? TI can't even make tiny calculators, when many companies come up with other kick ass products. I know it's not fair to compare calculator to other electronics, and I'm not comparing the hardware but the time of the production. TI isn't able, for some strange reason, to come up with anything new these days.
TI can't make kick ass calcs anymore, they just make plain calculators. Note that this is just my opinion, and I don't want to hear yours.
(cause I know what you think... wait! you probably don't want to hear my opinion either... anyway!:)
Let's stop this arqument right here, OK? =D
