I've been caught once with my 89.. it was in French class.. I was playing mario. There was no way the teacher could've seen the screen. She got up, and as she was walking towards me.. I exited the game, and turned on the password protection through Doors, and she took it. She told me I could get it back at the end of the day. She took it and sat down.. she turned it on.. and it asked for the password.. she looked at me.. and I just smiled.. it was funny. Still though.. I had Chemistry and Algebra 2 later that day.. and I didnt have my calc.. that sucked!

That's a good thing to do if you know your teacher clears the memory. Unless he takes out the batteries, then your screwed.

Not quite correct! TI-89's don't get their memory wiped unless you take out the regular and lithium batteries at the same time (yes, even when it's on while you pull the batteries out!) and most teachers don't mess with the lithium.

Besides, on the newer calcs (all but the 80/81/82/85 I think) that would require a jeweler's screw driver.

I dunno about the 85, but I know the 82 also needs a jewler's screwdriver.

It depends on how new the 82 in question is, though.

The old 82s with the blocky cases require a jeweler's screwdriver.

I don't remember ever having to use a jeweler's screwdriver...unless you're talking about those little 1/8" ones.

1. Take out the batteries
2. Take out the backup battery
3. Take out the ROM chip
4. Put the batteries back in, it should be cleaned.

If this doesn't work then....
5. Use a metal object to short two of the rom pins
while the batteries are still in there.
6. Goto Step 4

I always get mine back up with step 5, it takes some practice.

there's an easeir way 4 the 89. just take out the regular batteries only, hold down the "On" key 4 a few seconds, release it, and put the batteries back in. i know this works, 'cause i've used it several times.

Well, depends. For the 89, hold ON then yank the batteries. Watch what happens. Only works if the calc is ON, though. I think there is an app that, unless you hold the right key when you hit ON, it will immediately turn the calc off again. Which eliminates the battery yank. Now what I need to figure out is how to move the lithium cell INTO the case, so that even if they open up the backup battery area, it won't die. Doesn't seem too hard, the cell is small, and contacts using a small tensed strip and a spring. Clip the spring, rewire the strip, and move it inside the casing :) Now they have to risk destroying your property to kill it!!

From posts I have recently read, it doesn't seem that many teachers have much inhibition as to smashing a calc...

id seriously beat a teacher that would do that... ever heard adam sandler's "severe beating of a high school science teacher? that's it. id do that.

seriously though, i've only been caught once, and the worst thing is that someone stole it out of his desk! he was more than willing to replace it as i claimed i was going to make a complaint about him.
muhahahaha
