This being the 200 survey in ticalc.org's short history deserved a special kind of survey. What a better way than to look back at all the little tid-bits that have plagued ticalc.org in the past. Fell free to "express yourself" in the posts on this survey as you see fit, but only this survey.

Oh and I purposefully left out the typewriting Monkeys...those damn things just won't leave me alone!

Off topic (but I figured if I could be off topic in any survey, this one would be it)
Does anyone know where any good 68K ASM tutorials are? I am taking a class in school on the whole 68000 family, but I want to know more specific stuff about the TI calcs...particularly the 89. Does anyone know of any tutorials that would fit my needs? I sort of browsed the the archives, but the only one that really looked like it would be TI-calc specific was for the TI-92

I decided to start the "z80 in 28 days" tutorial...I like it...a lot...like, I'm on Day 14 and I have only been working on it for 2 days...I love ASM already

Ahhhh...wait until you get to debugging complex programs that logically *should* work. :-) If you're like me, you'll be shouting curses at your computer (or at least wanting to).

Ummm, 68k asm is not any higher of a language than z80 asm.

Yes but you can use C or Java with TIGCC or a Java compiler which came out recently; I forget what its name is. I recomend C.

He asked anybody if they knew of any good 68k tutorials. Then he said that he was learning z80 (the learn z80 in 28 days guide), and that he was on chapter 14 in two days (or something like that). I was surprised at that, since he was about to learn 68k asm, and then went and started learning z80. Nothing wrong with learning both at the same time, but I would probably get the two confused if I were to do that. That's why I inquired.

I was agreeing with his comment about liking z80 asm. I never said that 68k asm was a higher-level language. They're both ASM languages. Granted, I don't know 68k ASM (I decided that learning C would be easier), but I'm not stupid enough to think that it's a higher-level language.

Ahh, you gotta go for more than 100 ;-) But if you really know 100!, then you're far past the numbers of digits that the supercomputers have calculated pi to. You should be famous!

Also, I heard that you memorize e. How many digits of that do you know. I only know 5, Because they're part of my AIM screenname.

All I know is 2.71828182...I think that's accurate...maybe a couple digits too long...I used to know 169 (13^2) digits of pi and no_one knew 144 (12^2)...not sure how many he knows now, but I only remember like, 50 or so.

Infinite numbers shouldn't be used in math as you'd only get a number that's way off from True.
ie: Pi to 200 Billion decimals would be almost 0% accurate.

Right, but if you think of how many digits of pi everybody knows, that puts us in the 99th percentile for Pi Memorization! Mwhahaha!
But really, how many people know over 100 digits? Not many... *feels special* ;-)

Wow... well, I guess that's true. Most people only know the first three. :-\

3.14 or .141? Some people don't count the 3. I know about 15 with the three but only every use 3.1415. It always gives me slightly diffrent answers then my teachers who just use 3.14. One time a teacher got really made at me.

3.14. If you ask any "normal" person what pi is, they'll probably say "3.14." It's just the common response. In fact, most middle school teachers would probably say "3.14" as well. I bet if you made a poll where somebody randomly walked up to a person and asked them what pi (not pie :)) was, it would look something like this:

3.14 -- 75%
22/7 -- 15%
Huh? -- 9%
[any correct nerdy/mathematical answer] -- 1%

Now, if you factored in all the people who would assume you meant pie instead of pi, then it could be completely different... but really, it's sad, very few people seem to realize that pi goes on infinitely without a pattern.

Now what I really hate is when they make you do math involving pi, but instead of using pi, they make you use 3.14 as your "pi." I ALWAYS use/used the pi button on my calculator (faster than typing 3.14) and I ALWAYS used to get different answers. If they would get mad, I'd simply say, "My answer's more correct than yours, don't complain." Hehehe :)

I have a feeling that the percentage of people who would respond "Huh?" to "What is the value of Pi?" would be quite a bit higher than your example shows. :(

Ahh, probably. But if you polled just high schoolers, then even most of the j0x0rz would have an idea of what pi is.

Or more simply, four times the alternating infinite series of 1 divided by all the odd numbers.

Yeah, that would be :-D But did you mean from one to inifinity? That would make more sense. Unless... n=infinity.

Hm... you know, the correct definition would be n = infinity, but in truth, n can be equal to any such value that will provide the level of accuracy you want... So, I guess technically, it could be just about anything. But if you want the TRUE value of pi, then it's gotta be infinity.

Yep. I think this method takes a lot longer to get any precision. I made a Java program to do this once and I only got a few digits from it. I think the real problem was that the double variable types didn't store enough digits in their answer, so precision was lost. But, I have another idea for getting around this. What if you made your own divide function that would store the answer into a 1000-character string? (all digits must be accurate, of course) Then, if you make "add" and "subtract" functions with the string, then you could get a lot more digits of precision that way. Sound like a good idea? I don't think it would be that hard to do...

or you could just say the arctan(-1)

Yeah, but you can't really calculate pi with that without some kind of look-up table, and to make the table, you have to already know what pi is (or a few digits of it), so yeah, pi = arctan(-1), but you "figure out pi" with that. Or can you? I could be wrong, of course.

But...but...you need infinity for the definition of the integral function!!!! lim (x->oo) [some part that I forgot]

Yeah, you do use it quite a bit for limits in calculus, but I think he's talking about using numbers that go on infinitely (like pi). I just say, use the best estimation of pi you can get. There's a pi button on your calculators. Use it! (But if you're using pencil and paper, that's a different story)

Yeah, I remember when I had 12^2 and you had 13^2. :) And I think the year before that, the number of digits I knew was also a perfect square. Getting 314 digits would be cool. Or 1337, but I don't think I have THAT much time... ;-)

And I bet if you looked over them again, you'd find that you remember more than 50.

Like in the Matrix!!!!! But if there were something like that, he wouldn't need to go to school in the first place, giving him time to do more important things (like program).

But if you could program to your brain, then you could program what is fun, and that could be sitting on the couch all day doing nothing. You could sit all day, and think that you're having as much fun as being in a theme park or something... :)

I know a little over 160 digits of pi and only 15 or so of e. I'll memorize more of both when 3/14 comes around. :)

Heh, you're right, I tested that once. I like google's calculator. It comes in handy a lot when I'm too lazy to get out of my chair to pick up use my TI calculator.

Well, this may seem like a shocker, but try http://www.google.com/ ;-) j/k, I'm just messin'

But really, if you go to google, all you need to do is type in your math problem. For starters, type in pi. At the top, it should say something like "google calculator" and the answer. You can go back and try something else like e^(pi*i) or 2asin(1). It actually handles a LOT of functions (well, more than I thought it would). It's VERY handy, since google is my homepage.

Google can do so much for you... I also use it quite frequently to quickly find the correct spelling of a word. *hugs google*

The only problem with using Google as a spell checker is that there's a small chance that the first few pages found might also have misspelled the word. :-)

Anyway, I remember when Chickendude posted a whole bunch of digits of pi. Was it 50,000? I can't remember how many it was. I just remember that it took up MANY pages. :-D
But posting them is rather pointless UNLESS you know them. Anybody can copy and paste. It takes 1337 SKILLZ to memorize them.
