I am interested to know what, of the new calculators, the ticalc.org community has. Personally I just got a TI-89 Titanium, and love it.

Ahh! Little error: The two "84" calculators are the TI-84+ and the TI-84+SE. I'm bet somebody else already noticed this and commented below, but just in case..........

I don't think I'll be getting a new calc anytime soon. My TI-89 works perfectly fine. Of course, I certainly wouldn't mind having another calculator!

After my 83+(regular) broke, I was going to buy a Ti-89, because I was going into AP calc, this fall. But when I saw the TI-89T was going to be released, I figured I had nothing to lose, and waited to get it.

My HW2 TI-89 had a battery explode in the back in April- right before Cala II and Chem 33 finals!! I knew the TI-89 Titanium was due in May, but I didn't want to wait.

So, I bought a Voyage 200 for 12.5% off list. Pretty slick!

I had a battery blow up in my game boy before...I was playing, then all of a sudden I heard a little pop that sounded like popcorn. I also felt a little vibration. I opened the back of the gameboy, and this liquid stuff was leaking out of the battery, and when it touched the game boy's plastic parts, it immediately turned into powder. It broke the gameboy (which luckily was my old one and not the "color" version).

It went "POP!" and then a sizzle.

It was not funny when I had to buy a replacement...

Just found this forum. My son is just entering 8th grade. He is in an Algebra class and his math teacher told him to get a graphing calculator. TI 83, 84, Silver etc. I just started looking on the web and saw TI89. I need help determining which is the best one.
Is the TI 89 the newest? I would like to get him one that he can have for a long while ...even into High School and College perhaps. Anyone who can help give me the low down, I would be grateful.

One goofy mistake: Interpret "84" as "84+" and "84+" as "84+ SE."

Well that mistake was easy to make considering the 83, 83+ corrilation.

It will confuse a lot of members voting though. Atleast those who haven't heard of the new calcs.

To be blunt, TIs new calculators don't impress me at all compared to the earlier versions. Sure, an upgrade here and an upgrade there is fine but it's nothing special. I'd hate to say this but HP is looking like a very good competitor at the moment and the gimmicky "face plates" is nothing compared to a 75MHz HP Calc. ;-P

You know, I have never seen an HP calculator... Heard of them, just never seen them. As a matter of fact, I haven't seen anything TI-92 on up... No stores around here carry any fo those items...

Bigger number != better calc...my friend has a TI-113 or something like that...it's basically a four function calculator :)

Aren't those the plastic blue ones they use in elementary schools? The ones that are solar powered?

Bigger numbers generally do mean better calcs. It depends on what numbers your looking at: 10MB, 75MHz, 15MHz, 6MHz, etc. TI has made a lot of other calculators that aren't graphing calculators and ofcourse they're going to use a similar "product numbering system. Take the TI-99 for example. A C64 type calc. (not quite)

that's what I was talking about...not 6MB 10MB etc...TI89, TI92, TI108 are the numbers I was talking about...TI-108 isn't even as good as the 83...

HP calculators are great. I'm not saying TI calculators are bad, but I really think HP spends a lot more time and effort developing the software on their calcs. For example, the HP-49g has a 4Mhz processor, whereas the 89 has a 12Mhz, but the 49g is faster at most calculations (factorials for example are about 10 times faster) because they spent more time developing the CAS. I will admit though, that TI calculators are more user-friendly. That's why TI's are more prevalent in schools, and HP's in businesses (engineering anyway...)

I know they are good but the price tag is a bit steep (at least on the ones I've seen).

the 49g+ (their best calc) is just about the same if you compare HP's price and TI's price, but both calcs can be found cheaper. I found a 49g+ on ebay for $100...don't think I won it though...I need to check...

I don't understand why they don't create a new calculator using the zilog eZ80 processor with its good performance.

I have only seen their finacal ones. My dad has one and swears by it and RPN. He needed to use my 89ti for something one time and I needed to explain how to use "add". Kinda funny.

HP was really popular along time ago. They were like really high class and expensive, but now people don't pay attention as much. Most calcs now are TIs and Casios.

"Kinda" like anyone who knew anything about calculators (and had money to spend) would get an HP....They still are the best, however they just aren't as readily available and take a bit longer to learn how to use correctly...

Uh... I thought overclocking required some kind of hardware change. (Tampering with the interals and stuff) Just running a program to change the speed of your calculator doesn't make sense.

How you overclock ANY processor (a PC's CPU, TI's 68000 chip, or the ARM chip in a HP calc) with a program is by changing the multiple of the system bus speed in relation to processor core speed. Or, you could raise the bus speed to the same effect. Both REQUIRE good cooling systems to do and will void the warranty. This is accomplished in the BIOS of the machine.

Raise the multiplier in a 3.0GHz P4-HT from 200MHz (I know, they sell it as 800MHz, but it is really 200MHz quad-pumped) from 15:1 to say, 16:1 and your 3.0GHz chip will now run at 3.2GHz.

Or if you raise the bus speed from 200MHz to say, 233MHz, your processor will now run at almost 3.5GHz (3495MHz.)

That is how overclocking is done. The ARM chips in HP calcs can be run much faster than 75MHz- they are run at that speed to save battery power. Sony uses 400MHz ARM chips in its most expensive Clie PDA.

I wonder why TI doesn't use Intel XScale processors in its graphing calcs. The new ones come in at 312 and 624MHz- to do calculations any faster would take Mathematica being run on a dual-processor G5 or an Athlon 64 PC.

It may just be a user frienly approach. Ever since "students" came across assembly language, TI would have to think about what hardware restrictions should take place as someone messing around with: ASM(prgmASM) with machine code that could potentially (blow up your calc) if CPU overclocking were enabled.

It would also make them more expensive. You can get Z80 and 68K processors for a couple dollars each, but XScale and other higher-end processors cost a lot more (heck, some *PDAs* use XScales!).

z80's don't need to be cooled, and allow the calc to be smaller.

XScale processors don't need to be cooled, either. A 400MHz model sits in my Toshiba e740 PDA. No fan, no nothing (it's a PDA..)

I agree with that. There really isn't that much of a difference between the 83 and 84 series, or the 89 and 89 Titanium. The most noticible new feature on the 84+ is just a new retro style case. I hate to say it, but HP's calcs are more powerful, as long as you don't want to play games.

Now, I could be wrong, but I would say that at least half of the people that come to this site download games. Of course they're not going to want an HP!

Saturn Assembly programming and SystemRPL (comparable in speed to TIGCC) is available on a HP calc along with their equivalent to BASIC (UserRPL). Also, although there aren't very many games for the calculators, it doesn't mean it's not possible. For a sample of games that are available, just go to hpcalc.org...

Someone has recently started adapting TIGCC to compile programs for the HP calculators. The compiled programs run in native mode on the calculator and not in emulated mode, so they should run pretty fast.

yeah, that's only on the 49g+...I have a 49g, so I was talking about that...on the 49g+ there's to different asm languages (native and emulated), SystemRPL, UserRPL, and the "in development" thing with (HP?)GCC...

And you know what? TI-84+ SEs are s-l-o-w-e-r than TI-83+ SEs because some of the processer speed is devoted to the clock on the TI-84+ SE!

I am not even going to pay attention to the HP49g+ until they stop emulating old hardware and finally write a new OS for the ARN processor.

I think you will be waiting for a very long time, i don't think they ever will. Think how much it would cost to program.

At least any new games/programs for it aren't emulated.

HP, unlike TI, spends money and time in order to develop some of the THE BEST programming for their calcs, which is why the 49g (not 49g+) is faster in some areas than an 89 even though it has 1/3 the speed of a processor...the only reason the 89 is faster with most calculations is it uses look-up tables...which hogs memory

It means 'lol!'. You see, 'lol!' looks like '101!, and the '101' looks like binary, so when converted to decimal it is '5!', and 5!=120. To avoid confusion, someone decided that it should be written as '120d', with the 'd' standing for decimal. Pretty neat, huh?
