It may be pretty cool, it's pretty expensive too. I've had my 83- for more than 3 years now, so I can type pretty quickly on the built-in keyboard. I don't think I'll buy the keyboard, sorry TI ;).

seems like a waste to me, why would I need it, the keyboard on it is easy enough, and Im not gonna use it to take note, I use my newton for that. I can just write on my newton and it recognizes it, ie palm, but before palm, and it works better.

well, sellers always put a nice little 'ONLY' word in front of their little prices no matter how little they sometimes are. anyays, i think $40 for a calc keyboard is outrageous. most folks who have calcs for a long period of time can type very fast on the builtin keyboard (haha, sure 92/+ users :)) i would consider buying the keyboard if it was like $20 max (look at PC keyboards, they're like free comparing to TI keyboard!). okay, my raving comes to the end here...

Before long there will be all sorts of schematics in the archives on how to build a little (PC) PS/2(keyboard) to calc coverter for a fraction of the price. And I hope that such a home made keyboard will include Ti-83 support...

I know a few people who would love to do that...

No offence, but the software sounds a little crappy. I think I'll build such a thing and try to write a Ti-83 driver if I can find the time (I'm building a Ti-83 driven robot for a school project at the moment).
It should be possible to write an interrupt routine to just simply replace the build in Ti keyboard with this thing. Who knows... It would be cheaper than TI's keyboard, that's for shure.

Re^7: Do you plan...

That is what I do, but it is far easier to type non-words than to get the recognizer to interpret them correctly. Try writing "Miles:=StringToNumber( :Parent().MilesInput.text);" as one line and you'll see what I mean. Programming goes _much_ slower when you use the recognizer and speed is only marginally improved by using the on-screen keyboard. I might get one of these for the sole purpose of adapting it to work with the Newton.

That sample line of code was from a project that I had to do in my CS class. I am one of about 2 people who has already programmed and the instructor started us out with a miles-per-gallon calculator for everyone else’s' sakes. I wrote my program in about 2 minutes using NewtDevEnv.

Lastly, if the keyboard is anywhere near as good as the Newton keyboard is, then it is well worth the price. The Newt kbd is almost silent, it can take some serious abuse (being dropped 5 stories, thrown against concrete, a middle-schooler’s backpack, etc.), and it has reasonably sized keys.

$40 is still a lot. I think it would be a nice thing to have, and it would really make programming easier, but can use just imagine yourself going into science or math and trying to take notes by plugging in a massive keyboard to your calculator? First of all, it would take up all the room on your desk, and second of all, you'd REALLY look weird, but that's okay since everbody at my H.S. knows I'm a geek/nerd/etc. (especially those in the "advanced" classes).

Oh don't you keep saying that.
See my comment below about the remote control protocol. This works with any TIOS.
Evidence:
When you compile and run a program in TIGCC, you can run it on your calculator through the link port. The TIGCC IDE sends commands that will emulate one keypress. A group of those keypresses is sent to empty the command line, type your program name, and press enter (key 13). This works on all versions of the TIOS.

I think you need 2.08. It's easy to get though. The new Ti-Connect program automatically backs up and restores files. However, I don't see the point of a keyboard for a calculator. If you're that serious about programming, just get an emulator- they're free.

Folding keyboards are far easier to break, so I do not think that TI will make a folding version. I would guess that its qwerty is about 85% of the size of the qwerty portion of a computer keyboard.

Personaly, I think that a Blackberry style thumb keyboard would make much more sense on a TI, but that would make the calc _very_ long. they could concievably make a thumb kbd that has a cable instead of a plug on the front, but it would still be weird.

they should put a USB port on the Ti-83, so after you write something on your keyboard, you can print it off on your printer

I relize that wont ever happen, but admit it, that would be pretty freaking cool

I feel for you, man. I was stuck with half speed dialup for the past few years. The area where I now live, however, has free wireless broadband. I love wireless T3 lines, but FTTH (fiber to the home, it gets speeds aproaching 500Mbaud IIRC) would be cooler.

Now for the content. This seems like a stupid move on TI's part. The keyboard can only be used in their special app and the 83+ has no clipboard or other such features. If they totaly redid the OS, then it might be possible to get the kbd to work elsewhere, but that would break compatibility with older programs that rely on 1 character variable names. They could make a new app that would let you write programs and then tokenize them, but I doubt that they will. It is also possible that they might let Detached Solutions take a stab at making a tokenizer. The kbd would go fairly well with TitanASM and someone could just write an output plugin that makes TIBasic programs.

1. It can be used in OS 1.15 at the homescreen, and probably other places. Still, I doubt there's tokenization.
2. Why would it break programs relying on 1-character names?
3. Yes, TitanASM support and a tokenizer would be nice. I just hope they can be made to work with the PS/2 link as well.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Do you plan to get a TI Keyboard?

The only use I see for it at the home screen is to type strings.

It would break old programs because of the way that the 83 series interprets variables. The 83 interprets AB as A*B. If you added long variable names, it would interpret AB as a new variable which it would initialize to zero. This would prove to be a rather large problem.
