No, I'm not getting a keyboard because it's not supported on the TI-86. I should be though, because the 86 is a lot better than the 83+, and there are a lot better programmers for the 86 than the 83+, so it would be nice to have one for the 86.

I'm not gonna argue with you, the 86 has better hardware and handles grayscale better. And I will give you that there aren't as many crap programs. But the 86 is all RAM. So if it resets, and you don't have the stuff archived, you're screwed. Just my $0.02

True, TI should have made it 86 compatable (if it isn't, I don't know...). But, the 83 and 83+ are still the most common (especially in high schools and stuff). The only reasons you have anything more is if you are in an engineering program; and if you are, you probably have a laptop. All I can say is that you're SOL.

There used to be a rumor that TI was getting rid of the 86

Why would TI get rid of the TI-86?
Morgan Davies  Account Info

i fail to see why TI would get rid of their most advanced calculator that is allowed to use on the SAT. Seems if people knew they couldn't use their TI-89, more people would be buying the TI-86, or the 83+ if they seek the ability to archive.

I fail to see why some people fail to see that the 89 is completely legal on the SAT, says so on box, says so on Ti's site, response from sat.com says so.

It's the ACT that you can't use the 89 on. That's where people get confused. The SAT rule is no qwerty keyboard, and the ACT rule is no AMS. But being that neither test contains calculus, it is possible to take the test with only a scientific. Any other reason you would need an advanced calc for those tests is illegal regardless of platform anyway.

Seems if people knew they couldn't use their TI-89 (68k calcs) on the SAT, more people would be buying the TI-86, since it has more abilities than the T-83+, excluding the ability to archive programs.

Actually, the 89 is legal on the SAT. I'm not just saying this in blind defense of the 89, I have taken the SAT and I used my 89. I can't understand why so many people think it isn't legal.... it even says that it's legal on the packaging....

ti-86 is the hit on math contests and olympiades. they explicitly prohibit TI-89 and HP-49G -like calculators with symbolic manipulation abilities... not that you could not quickly implement a simple LISP interpreter on a TI-86, thus opening the doorway to 5-line symbolic differentiation, etc. ... integration, too, although it takes more than 5 lines...

I believe the subject at hand is the SAT, not 'math contests and olympiades'.

I checked education.ti.com and they said that the TI-89 was allowed on the SAT's. If they didn't allow it, then either TI is wrong, or they cheated you.

Um, I think they already did, if you go to education.ti.com, you'll see the only calculators "supported" on there are the TI-83+SE, TI-89, and V200. (*cry* my poor, poor TI-82!)

Hey Michael!!

Make a keyboard compatible for everything below 89s (including the 80s, 81s, and, yes, no_one's 82 :) ) and sell it for two bucks!!! TI will be mad at you, but we won't!!

YAY! A keyboard for my TI-82! w00t!

Hehe, this one kid was annoying me in school, so I turned around and said "w00t!" in the middle of when he was blabbing on about something. That shut him up for a while. :D
