I wonder if other people with multiple calculators really only use one. I have an 89 and an 86, but I must admit that now that I have purchased the 89, I rarely ever use the 86. Come to think of it, I don't even know where it is right now. :(

/me uses his 89 for normal stuff and his 83 for 2 player tetris (it crashes the 89 and u can only rotate 1 way).

So what? When I play tetris (Especially "The New Tetris" for N64), I only rotate one way. I think it's easier that way.

Real men rotate their Tetris pieces only one way. I didn't even know a second way existed until about thirty-seven seconds ago.

Well, I guess I am different here... I use the two rotation buttons in ZTetris. Certainly makes things easier on level 16 when I am trying to beat my all time high of 17780 points.

After a month long scientific study, my team of experts have concluded that consistantly rotating pieces two ways is much more time comsuming than one way.

Just thought I would add a little bit of my expertise on this subject :)

I have five: TI-81, TI-82, TI-85, TI-86, and TI-89, although I have no idea where the TI-81 is (not that I really care anymore). The only one I use now is the TI-89, since it does just about everything I need it to.

They're also old... :-) Even my TI-89 is about 6 years old, my TI-86 is 9 years old... and I got my TI-81 back around 1994, so, wherever it is, it would be 13 years old. Whoa... Maybe it's about time to upgrade to an 89 Titanium now. I could use more Flash space.

Well, if you only need math, I don't see how can you survive with a TI calculator alone. It's great in classes and all... but let's face it... it's not that fast. If you have 10 calculators and only use them for math, keep a 92 Plus, sell the other 9, buy a computer and install Mathematica 4.0 on it! Then you wlil have a good portable math computer power, and a even better desktop one!

Although I stated in my Bio that I own an 85, 86, and 89, it is just their "soul" that remains... I only have the 89 right now. When I got my 86, I gave my 85 to my younger sister, and just recently when I got my 89 I gave the 86 to my girlfriend (she had one, but it was from school and had to give it back at the end of the year). I really miss it, though, I think the 86 was a lot more efficient when it came to usage, in comparison to the 89 (you can get to things a lot faster), but the 89 has a lot more functionality...

I have a 73, 85, 86, 89, and 92 as far as TI calcs go. I use my 86 for programming and my 89 for math. My 85 is busted (screen went out), the 73 is uh... too basic... and the 92 is too bulky lots of times (but I do use it some). It's one of the problems with a company that creates *so* many different models.

Apple fell into that problem in the early 90's with the Macintosh. It had like 20 different models which were not related very much. That was one of their major problems that causes their downfall.

Yes. I only have one HP. I might get the 49 when it comes out, dunno. It's kind of interesting though... HP released the 48 so long ago and it's taken this long for TI to catch up with the 89 (the 92 doesn't count for catching up IMO since it isn't handheld). So now HP's gonna release a better calculator like within a year. Interesting :)

I'm just kinda curious... HP's seem to be generally regarded as much better than TI's. So why get a TI? I got my 83 'cause I needed it for school (specifically, an 82 or 83 was required to take Trig AP). I suspect many others got their calc for the same reason. But if you have a choice, why get a TI? Is it an issue of price or what?

TI's are cheaper and easier to use. Half the ppl in my calc class had trouble with the 83, imagine what whould have hapened if the teacher tried to teach them RPN.

the new hp49 does both algebraic and rpn, and in fact defaults to algebraic so that they are easier to get a grasp on right out of the box for people who don't know rpn. It should be available real soon now (shipping this week I think) in some places. It's not too much more than an 89, and a little cheaper than a 92+ according to the wholesale calc sites. But the calc<->pc link is pretty expensive, $50ish is what I've seen. Still a very exciting calculator, we'll have to see what TI does with their new rom for the 89/92+ when they release it.

Did you ever try an HP49? Try this:
factorize 2^67-1 or compute the taylor series of ln(sin(x+1/2)) to... lets say... the 25th order... do that on a HP48, a HP49, a TI-89 and a TI-92 Plus (or regular TI-92)... compare the time spent, and the result. On the taylor series, you get a result on a TI calc, and a memory error on a HP48...

But TI is slowly phasing out older models, such as the 82, 85, and original 83 (in lieu of the 83+). That not only means that the market will have too many choices but they'll also have to worry about constantly upgrading their calculator to get the newest model. Hopefully, flash ROM upgrades can help solve this.

Hm... TI must be phasing out the original 83 and the 82 _very_ slowly. I noticed that both calc's are now in the newer case (the one used by the 73, 83+, and 89). Closer to the original topic, I would consider buying an 86+, if TI ever makes one. I thought I remembered reading somewhere in the TI-86 asm list archives that the 86 was originally going to have a flash rom. Does anyone know if this is was the case, or if I'm not remembering things quite right, and if it is, why did TI change it?

however 'real' physics teachers don't appreciate the point of setting q's you can do w/ just pen+paper, hence they use inconvenient angles (anyone know sin 35.5 off the top of their head) hence the 86 (+games of course). also a 92 i never use. (they have derive on the computers in school, but i never use that either)

Cuco, you must be from a European country because your attitude toward calculators and mathematics is not of the U.S. Thank you for saying what I've felt for so long.

I won't say how many TI's I own, but I got them to learn programming. I'm still trying to learn assembly. Learning math takes priority over fiddling around with a calc anyway. Calcs and PC's have their place, but so do pen and paper.

Most of the people at my school use a TI-83 or a TI-83 plus. I program it a lot, and decided to get a TI-89 because of the added functionality. When I got the 89, I thought that I wouldn’t use my 83 much anymore, but actually, I find that I am still using it quite a lot. I am one of the only people at my school that really know how to use the calculators well, and I have made an integrated set of useful (to me anyway) math programs for the 83 that I force everyone else to use by making them required in order for the games that I give away to work. I really don’t want to maintain a TI-83 and a TI-89 version (I update it too much). So, I just use my 83 for math programs and programming for everyone else, and my 89 for math and before I updated to ROM v1.05, some asm programs. Now, I bought an 83 plus because my 83 is falling apart from overuse. I use all of them a lot. TI-89 Basic is pretty powerful compared to TI-83 Basic and I'm glad I bought it.

Your 83 is falling apart? Poor thing. What happened to it? I am just curious because I have beaten my 85 to death in the last 3.5 years and it still works perfect, and it is holding together very solidly, though it does have it's fair share of scratches and marring.

I use all of my calc's: The 85, 86. and the lowly 80. I use the 86 the most for math, but also use the 85 when the 86 is busy doing stuff like finding the zeros on x^7 + 4x^3 + 5x + 20 :) I also use the 85 for games because the 86 is too damn unstable.

I probably use the 80 the least, but it comes in handy because it's so small, light weight, and cheap (I'm not risking my 86 in chemisty lab, I'd rather use my 80 that I paid $5 for :)

I actually use my 36 solar a lot for simple stuff, because it's so much easier to do trig on and so I can save on batteries.

I also had an 83, for stats, which I no longer had (gave it to my 'lil sister). I didn't use it much except for that one class which was centered on the calculator.

I have a 1 TI-83, 1 TI-83+, and 2 TI-86's. I admit, now that I have the 83+, I use the 83 less. But, I still use the 86's as well. I even rotate between them both. I can load up one calc with games, and another with math and science programs. That way, I just grab the calc that I need at the moment and I'm set. And since I ususally have multiple calcs in class, I let other people borrow them and I get to know more people. So, all in all, having and using multiple calcs pays off.
