Calculators vs. PDAs
Posted by Nick on 13 June 2002, 01:22 GMT

CNN has recently put out an article (discussion also on Slashdot) regarding the slow but definitely palpable convergence of graphing calculators and PDAs. Since TI has essentially cornered the graphing calculator market (others would be quick to debate that, but it's what I think), the article places major focus on their business strategy (FLASH on the 83+, Voyage 200, and so forth) and its relation to Palm's inclinations towards mathematical applications and suchandsuch. This is definitely worth mulling over and discussing. Go!

I read the CNN article and they did not mention half of the stuff that the TI-89 can do. One such example the e-books. Also on the other link the people were fussing about cheating on a calculator and people not learning because of the calculator doing it. If the teacher has pop tests without calcs. then you have to learn the material.

I think that they should say that TI IS BETTER because it obviously is. I didn't see the CNN article, so i don't know all it said.

Obviously you don't own a PDA. I own 2 PDA's - a Casio E-125 and a HP. Both of them have advanced graphing and math software installed; I also have 256-color games, such as Doom, Quake, and much more; I also have Visual Basic / C for Windows CE; and the all-favorite media player, with good sound quality. I also bought a fold out keyboard (pocket sized) that folds out to a good size. It has the internet, and is in 256-colors.

Compare this to a TI: Basic graphing, software; 2 basic colors (with the exception of a few grayscales...); limited games with really no true 3-D effects; media player? HA. ; Keyboard? 3rd party; Internet? I wouldn't think of it.

$450 wasn't bad at the time.

Actually, most of them are. I recieved Doom, Quake, and many others free. The only one I have had to pay for is Sim City 2000.

Yes, $5.00.

I am pretty proficent in what I discuss. I have completed 20 hours of Comp. I believe that the people at MaxCoderz have no clue in what they discuss, with the exception of a few who actually program assembly. The rest are what you call "posers", who attempt to hide the fact that they are knowledless in what they talk about.

I own a PDA, two TI-89s, and a TI-85. I've already had to pay $100 (TWICE) to replace a cracked screen on my PDA. My TIs have not cracked, despite the hundreds of times I dropped them. Simply from a financial standpoint, I like TIs better.

I also use my T-89 about ten times as much as my PDA. In fact, I can't ever *remember* the last time I used my PDA. I love TI, and always will.

BTW, did you know a screen replacement for a Visor Basic costs *more* than the Visor Basic itself?

They have to take it out and replace the flat ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the mainboard. They do it the easy but expensive way: pull the mainboard, transfer your settings & data to the new one, and install the new one. also, they want people to stop being stupid.

TI-82s are FLIMSY. Use TI-83 Pluses or a TI-70, since they have flash ROM the casing is harder and the calculator weighs 3X the weight of TI-82s!

Well, get an 83+, plug in the graphlink, add a null modem cable, a modem, a phoneline, install 'Telnet 83+', dial out and there you have a simple terminal emulation package.
Now, take that and add an HTML renderer- there is a calc with internet access.
I think that someone should try to make an adapter that has the linkport socket on one end and the serial adapter that plugs into the modem-
or that TI should make a modem with a linkport on it and an app that does full internet access...
