Calculators vs. PDAs
Posted by Nick on 13 June 2002, 01:22 GMT
CNN has recently put out an article (discussion also on Slashdot) regarding the slow but definitely palpable convergence of graphing calculators and PDAs. Since TI has essentially cornered the graphing calculator market (others would be quick to debate that, but it's what I think), the article places major focus on their business strategy (FLASH on the 83+, Voyage 200, and so forth) and its relation to Palm's inclinations towards mathematical applications and suchandsuch. This is definitely worth mulling over and discussing. Go!

I read the CNN article and they did not mention half of the stuff that the TI-89 can do. One such example the e-books. Also on the other link the people were fussing about cheating on a calculator and people not learning because of the calculator doing it. If the teacher has pop tests without calcs. then you have to learn the material.

Internet on an 83+

Oh, so calculators do not have the internet, hey?
Well, get an 83+, plug in the graphlink, add a null modem cable, a modem, a phoneline, install 'Telnet 83+', dial out and there you have a simple terminal emulation package.
Now, take that and add an HTML renderer- there is a calc with internet access.
I think that someone should try to make an adapter that has the linkport socket on one end and the serial adapter that plugs into the modem-
or that TI should make a modem with a linkport on it and an app that does full internet access...
