Calculators vs. PDAs
Posted by Nick on 13 June 2002, 01:22 GMT

CNN has recently put out an article (discussion also on Slashdot) regarding the slow but definitely palpable convergence of graphing calculators and PDAs. Since TI has essentially cornered the graphing calculator market (others would be quick to debate that, but it's what I think), the article places major focus on their business strategy (FLASH on the 83+, Voyage 200, and so forth) and its relation to Palm's inclinations towards mathematical applications and suchandsuch. This is definitely worth mulling over and discussing. Go!

To anyone on the staff:

What happened yesterday to ticalc? For the longest while, it would just pop up a Cannot find server page when I tried to come here.

sounds like a DNS server outage

I am in southwestern canada, your locations and those of who it worked fine for, who somehow noticed that it did at that time

*laughing* You don't know what a Voyage 200 is?
I'm just messing with your mind. You don't have to be a nerd like us in order to post here.
The Voyage 200 is pretty much a redesigned TI-92+. I believe it has same features, just more memory and a cool looking case.

dosen't the 92+ HW2 have a clock, or at least a constatly on system timer?

Voyage 200 is to the 92 as 83+ SE is to 83+. (cooler)

also, the voyage 200 has a clock and triple A batteries so you get a lot less on one pack than you would on a 92+ w/ double a's.

go to richfiles.ticalc.org to get an AC adapter... you might have to think a bit to get it to work on a voyage (2e4)/(10e1) or is it (2e3)/(10e1) ?
i keep my 89 in the fridge for hot days... just pop it in your pocket... <joking>
anyone ever gave any thought to the idea of an elecrtomagnetic pulse generator? you could fry everyone's calcs (& other electronic equipment ingluding watches and autopilot) from afar while knowing that your calc's case is lined with lead and safely insulated from the outside world! you could also knock out bad music and fry any cds within 25 feet!
Contemplation right before summer vacation... ecstasy.
bet you coudn't line a palm with lead! there's no room in there for anything. they pay so much attention to size without thinking about possible end-user improvements!

That was described in an issue of Popular Mechanics a while ago...Supposedly you can build one for $400. Of course, I've been wanting to build a Faraday cage for my 83+ for a while, so should you indicate your intention to blast my area with an EMP, I will build it and be protected :)

Faraday vs. Plumbum
slimey_limey  Account Info

Lining your calc with lead would work better. A Faraday cage would let the electromagnetic radiation get through between the bars - it only protects the contents from electric sparks, like lightning. Lining your calc with lead, however, would work all the time, without your even having to think about it.
You might want to keep your electronic equipment in a grounded cooler lined with lead instead of lining it and making it heavy.
PS.: Plumbum is the latin of lead. That's why lead's name in the periodic table of elements is Pb.

I used to know what the greek names for all those strange elements were as well (ie: Ag, Au, K, and such). But alas, after 2 years, chemistry has fled my mind.

Is Au = augustatine or something?

There seems to be a bit of misunderstanding about EMP. It is nothing but a high power broadband radio wave with most of its energy concentrated in its lower frequencies.

Transfer to electronic equipment depends upon the antenna. Your calculator would be safer in a wooden desk than in your backpack 'cause you're a pretty good antenna.

A faraday cage will stop EMP. That is exactly what the military uses.

Okay, I have to say this before it gets pushed too far back in the threads.

What TICALC.ORG needs
A better system for uploading files. -- I submitted a file to them about a week ago, hoping it would show up within a day or two, and they just updated the file archives, and it is STILL not there.
Program of the Month -- I don't know why they took it off, but it was a great idea.

What VTI 5.0 needs
THEY NEED TO FIX IT SO TISSHOT WORKS WITH IT! -- I can't make animated screenshots. Does anyone know where I could get a copy of an older version of vti (that works) that allows tisshot to work? PLEASE!? Thank.

No, I have Win98. Tisshot doesn't work with the new vti, because there is something different about the skins (or so I've heard).

It works fine. Turn off your skin so you have nothing showing but the actual LCD display (no calc buttons). It's in the right click menu somewhere.

It also works if you can find skins from older copies of VTI. This are the skins without tranparencies; they also have a handy titlebar like on other windows, which can display the percent of actual performance.
