Calculators vs. PDAs
Posted by Nick on 13 June 2002, 01:22 GMT

CNN has recently put out an article (discussion also on Slashdot) regarding the slow but definitely palpable convergence of graphing calculators and PDAs. Since TI has essentially cornered the graphing calculator market (others would be quick to debate that, but it's what I think), the article places major focus on their business strategy (FLASH on the 83+, Voyage 200, and so forth) and its relation to Palm's inclinations towards mathematical applications and suchandsuch. This is definitely worth mulling over and discussing. Go!

Really now... PDA's are like $500 (for a good one). I'll stay with my $150 89 any day.

wrong. $699. But at Office-Max, i think a long time ago was having a 25-yr sale thing and HP-Jordanas were about $250 (which my mom wouldn't let me get. I dunno why)

Just to mess up no_one_2000_ ...
Here, PDA stands for public display of affection, something that few of us get because we're all socially-deprived nerds (I KNEW there was a reason we post here)!

Absolutely! If there's anything we TI-Gurus don't get, it's PDA! :-)

*sniffle* I wish we did, every once in a while, though. *sob*

How about "sn00t!"?

Yep.. Guess you learn something new every day, like TI-89s are fun to crash by saying Exec "51"

P.S. How do you use the Exec command? All I get is "Illegal Command" or "Address Error"

Exec is a string of mc68000 opcodes.
examples:
exec "4E444E750000" turns off calc
exec "4E494E750000" runs self test
opcodes are 4 hex digits long, ex.
4e44 is "trap #4"
4e4a is "trap #a (10 in hex)"
4e75 is "rts" (done)
4e71 is do nothing for one cycle ("nop")
0000 goes at the end of the string for padding
eg. exec "4e750000" is the shortest string possible - anything shorter or not a multiple of 4 characters long will give you an error (non-fatal). similarly, anything not in
1234567890abcdABCD
will give a non-fatal error
non-fatal means like an error: Break. fatal, conversely, means a crash where you have to reset with 2nd+left+right+on

Personally iPaq's suck. Not because of their software or any of that stuff, that in itself is great. But the annoying thing about them is their battery life. You only get 6 hours!

I personally like Palm because they last so long (in greyscale only). Plus the fact that there's craploads of free software for them (and shareware).

Oh, and if you were refering to handsprings specifically I have to agree with you because the cheaper ones don't have flash-roms, break easily, and have a very old palm os.

oh no, iPaq's last longer than 6 hrs. More like ~14 hrs. PC Mag Reviewed all types of PDAs and the iPAQ lasted 2 more hrs than the Jordana (or is that the other way around?)

He would be looking at PocketPCs and their ilk.

My PDA, a NewtonOS device, cost $116. It plays MP3s, it can download pictures from digital cameras, it can do anything that PocketPC can do, but the Newton does it better. NewtonOS is far superior to PalmOS or PocketPC. Palm is too simplistic and PocketPC is too much like a desktop OS to be a good handheld OS.

An interesting side note, before Palm started making handhelds, they wrote software for the Newton.
