Voyage 200 PLT Announced
Posted by Eric on 7 January 2002, 18:47 GMT

Voyage 200TI has announced Voyage 200, a new calculating device they're calling a "Personal Learning Tool" (PLT). The device is similar to the TI-92+ and contains all its features, including a QWERTY keyboard. It also includes a funky new design and a 2.7MB ROM. It'll go for around $200 (includes a Graph Link) and will be out in time for back-to-school season. Check the page for more information or view the specifications.

Update: (Nathan): Okay, okay, so it's been announced and not yet released. Boy, some of you people are picky! :)

That implies that it has actually come out and they are selling it or distributing it or what not. They have simply *announced* it though. Yeah yeah, minor issue, but it made me misread it and lots of people only read headlines.

On a side note, I guess this is their TI-92+.

I meant to say TI-92++ or TI-92+ Silver Edition.

I don't think they'd want to get stuck in that rut like Capcom has with Streetfighter...

Does anyone know the physical dimensions of the thing? And what speed the processor will be running at? It looks cool, but will probably only be usefull to those who do not have either an 89 or 92+.

Whoever was asking about the dimensions, they are
L*W*H
6 in, 4 in, 3/4 in. There is a slight angle for the keyboard though. processor speed probably hasn't changed from what I've heard.

Wow.. anyway, is this thing compatible with the TI-92+ as in you can send stuff to it and from it?? Does all the TI-92+ programs/games work on this?
BTW I think they should of named it TI-92+ SE

I think so too. Why would they call it Voyage 200? TI-92 Plus Plus would sound better.

Well, I suggested calling it the TI-92+ Silver Edition.
I've actually tested the Voyage 200 and I've experianced it firsthand. First off it's like a 92+. I will test the shells for it but almost all official TI-92+ APPs seem to work fine. The keyboard has the ?,! ect on it making it easier to type. There is also (as you may know) a graphical APPS menu and a clock. I will say no more. Because I don't know how much I'm allowed to tell.

Why exactly would you want this new calc if you already have an 89 or 92? It's virtually the same... I mean sure, it would be good if you have neither 89 or 92 and were going to be in some AP classes but otherwise it's not really a new calculator.

Plus, the name is misleading. Why not call it the TI-92 Plus Silver Edition like we all would have suggested? Using a new name implies something new and revolutionary, whereas this is just a beefed up 92+

TI-92+ Blue Edition might be more accurate (it is blue, not silver), but then they'd be kinda committed to using colors and +s for upgrades for a while. But they could have picked a better name than this.

Also, I've thought about getting a 92+ even though I already have an 89 just for the keyboard (I do a lot of on-calc programming).

A name of TI-92 Plus Blue Edition would limit distribution to K-Mart only :-|

Is the screen the same size as the 92+?
Will there be an os update for the 89 as well as the 92+, the graphical app thing seems like it would take too much screen space

According to the bid specifications, the screen is still a 128 x 240 pixel display. An OS Update for 92+ adding the new features seems to planned. A 89 AMS Update could be possible, and I hope for it, cause this clock feature is nice.

Clock... heh...
I remember when someone made a real-time clock for the 89/92. It made it so your calc didn't actually turn off - just set the contrast to 0. It was a TSR hook. It made your batteries die - fast. Fun.

Yes, but the HW2 TI-89/92+ and the new Voyage(TM) 200 PLT have a hardware RTC (real-time clock).

Re: I remember when someone made a real-time clock

This TSR clock which you're speaking about didn't set the contrast to 0, but turned the TI-89's LCD off:

From Fargo Documentation (Lowlevel.txt)

WO [60001C]
<...43210|........> = Something to do with LCD
: The TI-92's ROM writes $21 to this port during
: initialization, and $FF when the calculator is
: turned off.
<........|....3210> = bits <4321.> of contrast

The fact is you could'nt turn off the whole calculator, because you need the processor for the clock which is emulated by softawe.

There is nothing to worry about the clock on the voyage 200 since its clock will be for sure part of its hardware.

But anyway, this "voyage 200", is very disapointing so far. Now, if it comes with a C-compiler on it, then it would be great.

i was just looking at the source it uses a timer on auto int 5 to keep track of the time. But it does not use the $600005 low power port anyware.

Using this low power port it would be possible to turn the calc off until auto int 5 occurs. A massive amount of power could be saved with it.

I wonder if you could make a program that calls the time from the calc. Like if you wanted to make a program that found what time it would be in 2 hours and 37 minuted without having to prompt for the time. Kind of like the visual basic command: "x = Time(Minutes)" to get the minutes. Just curious!

You haven't said anything that TI didn't say in the spec sheets...

The only things that should require modification are the HW2patch (i.e., new AMS version needs to be able to be patched) and any programs which detect the calculator, and if unknown, default to TI-89. Other assembly programs seem to work fine on it. More issues might be found as far as a patch goes, but I'm certainly not about to try to hack it myself... I don't really care about assembly for it.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Voyage 200 PLT Released

It is not that they DEFAULT to TI-89, it is that they think the V200 is a TI-89 because 4 MB of FlashROM means ROM_base at the address $200000 like on the TI-89.

Those who have a prototype: Did you try ExePacked games like TI-Chess on it? Did they work?

I also think the fact that the current TIGCC grayscale routines default to HW1 when the HW version is not 2 might be a problem.

Everything *runs* that doesn't require hw2patch. I don't see any protection changes in the hardware.

Programs that assume the user is smart enough to know what calculator they have (i.e. Monster, Platinum Edition) also work, since they were compiled specifically for one calculator.

Oops, I assumed that programs would see what calculator it was using a documented method like FL_getParmBlock. I should've known that wouldn't be the case. I therefore assume that a hack is also used to detect HW1 vs HW2; and this hack seems to think the calc is HW2 still (or at the least, grayscale works fine).

Belive it or not... I have seen a TI-93 before. It looks just like the TI 92/+ but it doesn't have all the good features. It has like a slot for software though. One of my classmates had it in middle school. I saw the "TI-93" I was amazed... Maybe it was a prototype but I remeber seeing it. I really wanted to comfirm if there was ever, a TI-93.

It's more than compatible, it's practically the same thing. Other than a few strategic changes of key positioning, the main additions are more Flash APPS space, it's slightly thinner, uses AAA batteries, has a built-in clock and an optional icon based user interface. However, they will be releasing Flash APPS for the icons and the clock for a 92+, so the only new addition that might make it special is the extra room for Flash APPS.

Having a clock is always nice. I'm sure there are some benifits a program would gain by being able to time itself to a system clock.
