Voyage 200 PLT Announced
Posted by Eric on 7 January 2002, 18:47 GMT

Voyage 200TI has announced Voyage 200, a new calculating device they're calling a "Personal Learning Tool" (PLT). The device is similar to the TI-92+ and contains all its features, including a QWERTY keyboard. It also includes a funky new design and a 2.7MB ROM. It'll go for around $200 (includes a Graph Link) and will be out in time for back-to-school season. Check the page for more information or view the specifications.

Update: (Nathan): Okay, okay, so it's been announced and not yet released. Boy, some of you people are picky! :)

Well, i guess that you get a dumb answer if you post a dump question. But really why would TI use AAA batteries that are much more expensive than AA batteries and only have on third the capacity? I mean the voyage 200 PLT is not exactly small!

I think they should have rechargables(Li-Ion or something) and sell the calc w/ an adapter so I could charge the batteries when they are low over night. I hate going to the store buying those things.

You can buy the rechargable Batteries from Radio Shack (AAA).

I did, but I don't want it like that, it's extra trip and extra purchase. Why not include it in the package like you get when u by loptops.

as long as it doesnt have solar power where you have to sit under a light and angle it before you can see anything
that would just be kinda useless

I think its pretty stupid to use AAA batteries on a '92' calc , or as our 'friends' at ti call it, the voyage 200.
My 92+ drains enough of my batteries now and if i had AAA instead id have to change them almost every week! The lesser calcs should get the smaller batteries, not the biggest one of them all (if im right that the 92+ is)
BTW doesnt the 83+ drain batteries pretty fast on its own?

My silver's not draining very much, alas it has effects on performance, slower graph than 83+

Mine doesn't. The only problem i ever had was when i bought cheap batteries and left it on a basic game and the calc didn't APD and they ran out after 1 day. Otherwise i get about 3 or 4 monthst out of them (or thereabouts)

(though very late) I agree totaly. They should allow AA instead of AAA. NiMH AA cost the same amount as AAA but last 4x-5x longer and are rechargable.

seems to me that this is like the 83+-se or whatever they call that thing except as an updated 92+. doesnt look like a groundbreaking device for ti but at least they are releasing something new which shows that they will still be dedicated to their calcs for a while longer. the name seems a little too awkward and strange, voyage 200 plt is a too extravagant for a name, they should have continued the number series and made it ti-93 or something. it looks like a good device but will people pay for it when one can get a smaller ti89 which basically has the same functions for a cheaper price? i dont really see this device making its own niche. just my opinions. -DavidJ

I was basing the title on the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition. It seems like all they did was tweak both of them (which isn't bad or anything).

true, a bureaucracy's main goal is self-continuation, and an easy idea that makes them look good is taking one of their older products and putting it in a prettier face, adding a feature that would have cost more money to put in in the original version, and giving the product a new and snappy name like "voyage 200 plt" or "ti83se" or "windows ME" or my personal favorite for following this little practice: "imac" making the public think the product is actually a totally new and innovative product which in turn saves the designer's, bureaucracy's, and this case ti's ass. may not be truly new for the community but it does keep those ti ppl busy and ticalc.org gets a news item to make it look busy too! wow, i guess the bureaucracy was thinkin about this site all along, nevermind the cd fiasco. but i ramble, just my opinion. -DavidJ

Yes very good point. They should of continued the number series. What is with Voyage 200? It should be something like the beautiful name TI-93.

They should make another "prime" (like 73, 83, 89) calc, so they should call it TI-97, I think.
