TI Announces TI-83+ Silver Edition
Posted by Nick on 5 January 2001, 22:12 GMT
TI has announced that a new silver TI-83+ will be produced. It looks a lot like the gray iMacs, Handspring Visors, my old GBP, and so forth. It has around 1.5 megs of available Flash ROM and 24K of RAM (quite the insane amount of storage space, if you ask any TI type person). It's estimated to be available in April or May, 2001. Mmmmmm... eye candy in calculator form. I wish they did this sort of thing with the 89. Wait, I use Mathematica now. Never mind. :) Update (Eric): One more interesting thing to note is that the new TI-83+'s will have a CPU of 15 Mhz, which is more than twice as fast as the current model's 6 Mhz and 50% faster than the TI-92. Additionally, Detached Solutions has announced that a brand-spanking new silver TI-83+ will be the grand prize to their Application Programming Contest, previously mentioned on ticalc.org here. Update (Eric): Yeah, okay, I suck. I forgot that the new TI-83+ will be a Z80 running at 15 Mhz, which is still slower than the TI-89/92 running a 68K processor. So don't go trashing your TI-89 yet :).

Why is everyone talking about how it looks? Who cares! With all the upgraded stuff, I would be able to put up with an "ugly" calc. If you don't like it, put a diferent slide case on it!

Fast forward to january 2002
TI has just announced its newest calculator, the ti-83 pluse silver alpha ex 3 gold quantum edition. the new calculator features nearly 1 gig of memory and a 100mhz z80 processor. however, it still uses to same os and screen so i guess you'll be able to compute 3+3 really really quickly.. the calculator is expected to cost around $25-$30 more than the ti-83 plus silver alpha ex 3 gold.

I just bought an 89 after using the 83+ for a semester. I see no need to expand the memory in this primitive calculator. From what I am reading, TI would have better spent their efforts on an enhanced 86. It would be too bad for me if they announced an upgraded 89. I hate having old stuff.

With all this storage space, maybe a bunch of people can now make a CAS system

Keep in mind "This calculator was released to be sold alongside the TI-83 Plus and is not meant as a replacement. It is simply for those who want more power and memory."

Ummm...
I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but what the heck is anyone going to do with 1.5 megs of archive? Put 94 apps in it? Give me a break. I have the *original* TI-83 Plus with 160k of archive in it and I still can't fill the whole thing up. I keep on average 30 programs (plus MirageOS) at a time on it and only use about 5-10 of them more than once a week.
And how long is it gonna take to Garbage Collect? A week?

Ok I have what probably is a stupid question, but how are the higher-level calculators able to do grayscale graphics? I vaguely remember something about different shades of gray with the pixels, but I can't remember really. Could someone shed some light on this?

i have an 83+, rom 1.12 i believe. anyway, when i went to play sqrxz the game, it locked up big time. now everytime i hit the 'on' button, it flips on for a second showing random pixels, then shuts off itself. even if you insert a link cable, it flips back off. i've searched the TI site, but no luck. my friend fixed the same problem by hitting a sequence of buttons on his calc, but he can't remember which ones of course...
if anyone knows how to fix this problem, i would really appreciate it!

By CLEAR, I meant you press ON, and then you press CLEAR a few times until it works.
At least when I did that, I was able to get it on, so that I was able to reset the memory. However, I could not simply clear the RAM, and if I attempted, it would lock up, and I would have to get it on again until I decided to clear all memory, after which it worked fine. (Some of the special ways of turning it on are holding DEL or CLEAR while taking out one battery, keeping on holding it and putting the battery in, after which the calculator might turn on properly. [Read the TI Guidebook for this, though.]) Good Luck!
