Mega Man 86
Posted by Nick on 23 May 2000, 01:25 GMT
None of you know the exact amount of time I've remorselessly wasted playing Mega Man as a young, impressionable child. Perhaps the Mega Man III footage located on my little site was a giveaway, but for all of you folks who haven't been there yet, let me tell you this: if I had a choice between the following and giving up Mega Man for all time, I would sell my best friend into cruel, torturous bondage. I'm not even kidding. To this end, imagine my shocked awe when that and my other favorite thing in the whole widest world, the TI-86, decided to join hands in eternal happiness. Cullen Sauls has released a TI-86 version of said Mega Man, aptly named Mega Man 86. It's a remake of Mega Man II, but we won't hold that to him (any educated observer can tell you that it's a known, established scientific fact that Mega Man III is the best one). This is still in the demo phase, but it looks very, VERY nice. Final bosses, as I've seen, aren't in place yet, but it still looks slick. The scrolling and response times are very smooth, as expected. You can see the progress of the game as it goes through its development here.

Despite what some less enlightened individuals think, I too agree that Mega Man III was the best. Now, if I only had an 86...

Well, it seems like no one else is going to actually play this game, so I'll post some impressions... Overall, this game has AWESOME graphics... just looking at the intro screen, I was gaping and thinking to myself, "Am I really playing this on an 86?" Then I realized that it must just be the title screen that looks good... NOT SO. The character selection screen and that little screen that shows who the boss is on the level (If you've ever played Mega Man, you know what I mean) look so much like the original, you won't even notice it's in greyscale. (and very nice greyscale, at that) Then you get to play the game... which also has very nice graphics. However, the enormous sprites (the Man himself takes up about half the screen...) and the slow framerate (I admit it, I'm spoiled by console games. ;P) make this game nearly unplayable. Another "feature" (that I discovered about 5 seconds into the game) is that the enemies like to follow you around... very closely... in fact, so closely that you can't shoot them. However, this could be due to the fact that I suck at Mega Man games. Overall, I'd give the graphics an 8 (considering the graphics *are* amazing...), the gameplay a 6 (I'm sure it'll a lot more fun once I get to play it a bit longer), and the satisfaction a 9 (Mega Man! On the 86! Wow!). Definitely worth the download just to see the graphics...

Hey ho, don't cry yet, I will help out with the constructive criticism.
First, the key choice (2nd and F1) is just a bit odd. Either 2nd and Alpha or 2nd and F2 are better choices in my opinion.
Second, i agree, the guy moves too slowly to manuver around that beginning furry guy. Heh, dropped dead when letting go since buttons are weird didn't help. So, maybe fixing one thing will help the other, thats worth a try. If you have to move that slowly to keep it from flickering, then fix the buttons or drop that furry guy's speed down just ONE notch.
Heh, this ISN'T bad, but kinda funny. Before the gameplay, i kept hitting enter when should hit 2nd and alpha when enter and 2nd correctly sometimes. Well, who looks to see how to choose menus right?! :)
Sorry I only put the "CC" in there, but i will say congrats to the design of the flow. It does stand out. BOING BOING BOING BOING BOING, now for the down part of the jump, BOING BOING BOING, fire, bah losts 2nd key. Even harder on keyboard of PC :)
Keep up the good work, i know this DIDN'T take you a day and a night to code.

This game is just truly amazing! It has excellent graphics, multiple weapons, collision detection, etc...
The keys are a little odd right now, but that doesn't take away from the excellent game this is.
Great Game, Cullen.
