Bejewelled and Puyo Puyo 83
Posted by Travis on 17 November 2010, 06:33 GMT

It's time again to revisit some previous interesting programs in the archives:

Bejewelled screenshotBejewelled by Jonathan Martin is a fun TI-83 Plus/84 Plus Ion clone of the famous Macromedia Flash game. The object is to swap gems with adjacent ones to form groups of three or more of the same type of gym.

Screenshot of Puyo Puyo 83 Kevin Horowitz's Puyo Puyo 83 is a puzzle game that may resemble Tetris at first glance, but requires much more advance planning. The object is to clear blocks by placing matching ones next to each other in a way that causes remaining matching blocks to be cleared by falling on each other, etc., triggering a chain reaction. This game has a unique feature of being played with the calculator positioned sideways to better match the shape of the playing field. It also supports link play with a friend.

I remember that Bejewelled game. Quite awesome. I think that's the only one for calcs, right? Someone submitted one for Omni contest 2009, but it got rejected because the contest was for a platformer game in the style of Mario or Block Dude, plus it did not work properly. It had even better animations, though. Still, nice work Jon! *wonders if he's still around*

I haven't tried Puyo Puyo but it looked really great. I wonder if it's easy to play with the calc sideways.

Puyo Puyo is one of my favorite calc games ever! It's great that's finally being featured. The normal gameplay is awesome, and the addition of link play makes this game even more fun. I highly recommend it if you need more convincing.

I've never played Bejewelled, but it looks like a gem of a game...

Yeah, Puyo Puyo is an awesome game that deserves the feature. This is one of the reasons that Ticalc needs to award two POTYs this year: 2010, and Yesteryear (POTYY, for instance). I love the gameplay, the linkplay, and especially the sideways calcualtor concept that finally gives us righties what we deserve.

What would make Puyo Puyo even more fun is if the author made it compatible with Calc Net 2 in Doors CS to support four player linkplay (now wouldn't that be awesome!)

Oh, and speaking of which...
I don't know where else to say this, but I looked at the CalcNet 2 documentation and found out that it isn't compatible with Axe because of saferam conflicts (The author of this also wrote Axe, which made me think of this). So, if any of the guys at Cemetech are reading this, could the writer of CalcNet please move the Calcnet buffers to the *end* of SavesScreen in a future release, rather than the beginning, so that we can use it in Axe? Thanks very much.

That would be me. :) Since I'm sure I'm going to completely forget about this, would you mind bringing it up on Cemetech at some point? I have a lot of stress atm and I won't get to deal with this for a few days.
