TI-84 Plus OS v2.40 Released
Posted by Michael on 28 January 2006, 21:58 GMT
TI has released v2.40 of its operating system for the TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. They have again neglected to provide any description of new features or bug fixes in this version. However, it has been discovered that pressing Left+Right+On while the 84+ is off enters into a restricted mode designed for teachers to restrict calculators during tests.

Our calcs aren't safe anymore...
To fix this?
An assembly program that emulates the homescreen and memory menu (OS version check).
And the left-right-on combination results in the same effect, but only until another key combo is pressed.
I'm sure the restrictor mode won't be a problem for long...

I downloaded the new OS (2.40) onto my 84+ SE a few days ago and I see no difference in this one and the last one...other than that weird restricted feature...

Exactly.
The Z80 in the calculators can only address a 64KB memory map. The first quarter section (16KB) is permanently ROM page 0 and the second quarter is where Flash Apps and OS ROM pages are loaded. The last 32KB are addressed to RAM, but the OS uses both of these 16KB RAM pages for everything TI-OS (flags, ramCode, stacks, etc). If you were to swap in one of the unused RAM pages ones into either RAM slot, you'd lose either your VAT/stacks or your system flags/data. So, like Andy said, the only way to support extra RAM would be to map the second quarter of 'ROM space' with a RAM page. But then, the OS couldn't use any routines because all the OS code is also swapped into that second quarter of ROM. You can have one or the other, but not both (and the TI-OS is what makes your calculator 'work'!).
Also, Apps like Omnicalc and Emu8x _temporarily_ swap in RAM pages into the RAM slots, but they must restore it to the original page before they quit to the TI-OS or a crash would be imminent. It's how TI designed their OS...
