TI-83 Plus & TI-84 Plus Directories Merged
Posted by Michael on 10 September 2004, 02:20 GMT

It's been four months since we added the TI-84 Plus section to our file archives. In retrospect, this was not the best decision. One major developing problem was uninformed 84 Plus users who looked for programs for their calculator and were confused by finding only a few. Bearing in mind that the actual differences between even the 83+ and 84+ SE, the extremes of the series in capabilities, are very minimal, we have merged the two directories together to create the TI-83/84 Plus directory.

We hope that this change will lead to less confusion among new users and also will prevent the duplication of files in both directory structures. If a program requiring the 84+ is uploaded, it would be best to make a note of it in the program description. The only one such far that I'm aware of is Timerize.

Well I know one person on the staff that is pushing the idea of making one...or at least an ASM section with a linked BASIC section.

Well, with all new progs compiled with the latest TIGCC being compatable, there is little reason.

Unless the program is pure 68K ASM. Then, it's more than just using the latest assembler or even include file.

But there are a lot of old programs that are not being recompiled. The tigcc fileIO routines used to have a couple bugs that have been fixed for more than a year. I used to send out emails to authors asking them to recompile but no luck so far.

What about doing the same to the TI-92+ and Voyage 200 directories? It was already enough of a hassle to upload a file to both the TI-89 and TI-92+ directories, so many authors (including me) didn't bother (and just picked one arbitrarily), and the V200 one is a third one. And while there are significant differences (screen size, both physical and logical keyboard layout) between the 89 and the 92+, the situation between the 92+ and the V200 is much like the one between the 83+ and the 84+.

That was my arguement when we were deciding this...there's no consistency if we did this to the 84 directory....but I don't really care as ong as nobody touches my 86 dir. :-)

The best way to do that is to make a note to the file archiver to have the program linked to the other directories. It will then appear in all three.

There perhaps doesnt have to be a seperarte directory for the two 89's (although I feel that there should be) if there was a more permanent way of marking files than only in their description. I'm thinking of something similar to the small icons next to the program names that tell you if there is a screenshot. There could be a 89 only marker a 89T only marker a marker for programs that work for 89 and 89T. This could also be implemented in the 83/84 Plus directory.

: The only one such far that I'm aware of is Timerize.

Although I am glad you featured this great program, this statement is not entirely true. The Navigate! series by Ger Paternotte (ticalc.org/ archives/ files/ authors/ 74/ 7404.html), Sequence by Jon Pezzino (ticalc.org/ archives/ files/ fileinfo/ 345/ 34581.html), and Timerize 2.6 (released soon) are the only ones I remember.

The problem with having a joint section is that an 83 Plus user (and if I were just introduced to this site, I would do it too) might download one of the above 84-only programs and be shocked at an ERR:VERSION. The best way to keep from doing this is to revert to the old organization, except new submissions would have to be entered manually by the file archiver if and only if the comments specifically say that the program uses {the time functions, OpenLib(, ExecLib}. (Updates could be handled as they are now.) Or TI could put more thought into the release of calculators.

Or you can do as the article says and specifically state that this program will only work on the TI-84+...which is infinitely easier.

...except for n00bs, who I'm sure will not even read the description, or even if they do, think that it doesn't apply to them.

OR you can add a subdirectory in asm, basic, flash that says:
TI-84 Plus Assembly Clock Programs
TI-84 Plus BASIC Clock Programs
TI-84 Plus Flash Clock Programs
only for programs that need to use the clock on 84s

Yea but what if a game or a science program uses the clock? Then you would have to put it in both categories :o

Get the staff to link it. That's what I did with TI Calculator Knower (link). It is in the Mac, Windows, and UNIX directories, and they all share the same statistics.

Actually, I think that the 84+/SE link should be in the 83+/SE folder saying something like "84+ Only Programs". This would hopefully eliminate all confusion.

P.S... YAY!!! I CAN POST AGAIN
