TI-83 Plus & TI-84 Plus Directories Merged
Posted by Michael on 10 September 2004, 02:20 GMT
It's been four months since we added the TI-84 Plus section to our file archives. In retrospect, this was not the best decision. One major developing problem was uninformed 84 Plus users who looked for programs for their calculator and were confused by finding only a few. Bearing in mind that the actual differences between even the 83+ and 84+ SE, the extremes of the series in capabilities, are very minimal, we have merged the two directories together to create the TI-83/84 Plus directory.
We hope that this change will lead to less confusion among new users and also will prevent the duplication of files in both directory structures. If a program requiring the 84+ is uploaded, it would be best to make a note of it in the program description. The only one such far that I'm aware of is Timerize.

What about doing the same to the TI-92+ and Voyage 200 directories? It was already enough of a hassle to upload a file to both the TI-89 and TI-92+ directories, so many authors (including me) didn't bother (and just picked one arbitrarily), and the V200 one is a third one. And while there are significant differences (screen size, both physical and logical keyboard layout) between the 89 and the 92+, the situation between the 92+ and the V200 is much like the one between the 83+ and the 84+.

Although I am glad you featured this great program, this statement is not entirely true. The Navigate! series by Ger Paternotte (ticalc.org/ archives/ files/ authors/ 74/ 7404.html), Sequence by Jon Pezzino (ticalc.org/ archives/ files/ fileinfo/ 345/ 34581.html), and Timerize 2.6 (released soon) are the only ones I remember.
The problem with having a joint section is that an 83 Plus user (and if I were just introduced to this site, I would do it too) might download one of the above 84-only programs and be shocked at an ERR:VERSION. The best way to keep from doing this is to revert to the old organization, except new submissions would have to be entered manually by the file archiver if and only if the comments specifically say that the program uses {the time functions, OpenLib(, ExecLib}. (Updates could be handled as they are now.) Or TI could put more thought into the release of calculators.
