TI-83 Plus & TI-84 Plus Directories Merged
Posted by Michael on 10 September 2004, 02:20 GMT
It's been four months since we added the TI-84 Plus section to our file archives. In retrospect, this was not the best decision. One major developing problem was uninformed 84 Plus users who looked for programs for their calculator and were confused by finding only a few. Bearing in mind that the actual differences between even the 83+ and 84+ SE, the extremes of the series in capabilities, are very minimal, we have merged the two directories together to create the TI-83/84 Plus directory.
We hope that this change will lead to less confusion among new users and also will prevent the duplication of files in both directory structures. If a program requiring the 84+ is uploaded, it would be best to make a note of it in the program description. The only one such far that I'm aware of is Timerize.

Good. Now my friends who are calculator newbies won't complain to me as much that there aren't any games for their calculator.

Is there a reason it's not going to be "TI-83 Plus / TI-84 Plus"? Right now a newbie might think that the TI-83/TI-84+ means a regular 83.
It still shows two seperate directories on the root listing, although they both link to the same actual directory. Is this intended?
Also, the page at http://www.ticalc.org/pub/83plus/ still says 83+ (doesn't say anything about the 84+)

Good. Now to be really fair you should make a titianium section. There are REAL compatibility issues there.

As far as TIGCC is concerned, the Titanium is just a TI-89 HW3.
Rationale: There will be no other TI-89 HW3 (TI has discontinued production of the "classic" 89), so it's a unique identifier (we have a HW_VERSION pseudoconstant even in _nostub mode for quite some time now), and we can't give a non-0 value to CALCULATOR on an 89-family calculator because this would break source compatibility with the tons of programs writing CALCULATOR?foo:bar. Also, the keyboard layout is practically the same between the 89 and the Titanium (the Titanium keyboard has just been distorted by a curve freak, but other than that it's the same), so there is no reason for the typical game or utility to conditionalize on Titanium or not. Launchers or shells will indeed need to conditionalize on HW3, but they should conditionalize on the hardware version, not on the calculator model, in order to accomodate for future HW3 V200-family models.
