100000th News Post!
Posted by Michael on 24 December 2003, 18:31 GMT

This news article marks the 100,000th post in our news database. The actual number is less, because of deleted comments. Thank you to all the authors and users who have made us able to reach this milestone! As you know, Magnus has recently been working on improvements to our system, and we hope to have an even better news system in the future. What programs get to be featured in the one-tenth of a million news article, you ask?

XPak 1.0 and uView 1.0 have been released by Paul Froissart. XPak is a file compressor for the 89/92+/V200 that works like ZipLib, is almost as powerful as TTPack, and several times faster. uView is a companion text editor.

Basicbuilder by Martin Warmer is a Windows program to convert your BASIC programs into flash applications for the TI-83 Plus. This seems perfect for personal use, packaging games so that they can be run from flash and avoiding the pain of constantly ungrouping them. Please don't release a million number guessing game apps, however.

Oh, and right now - Merry Christmas to those of you in Australia.

Interesting programs. The zip thing looks nice, will have to check it out. Anyone writing similar for z80 series?

About the Flash App thing. I think its newsworthy to restate the fact that it should be for personal use only. We don't need 1 million copies of the BASIC programs to come out in Flash form. Sheesh, we'd have to make a separate directory to weed out the crap.

Which reminds me, I should upload GeoTI, I've had it for almost two years and not put it @ ticalc.org.

Anyway, good job guys!

Good point. I originally was going to write about me grimacing at the thought of this, and then I removed it. I put a little blurb back in.

The program though will not compile unless the percentage of wasted space is less than a certain number, ostensibly to prevent single 500 byte programs from being converted into 16 KB apps.

I tried to make it a little harder for basic programmers to abuse basicbuilder.

I require the original basic programs to be distributed as well, to stop people from using it to hide their basic code. I created a decompiler to enforce this rule.

It won't create an app if there is more than 3kb of space wasted. That's already 1.875% of the archive space on a ti83+.

If anybody thinks I should add some other feature to stop abuse just mail me.

It sounds like a good idea, but as for all the bad BASIC games being converted to APPs... Anyway, would it run faster? It seems like it would, since it's an APP. That would be a slight advantage.

Wait... never mind, it runs them from the RAM, right?

Yes, as you can see in the readme:
"You can start them from the app and they will be copied to ram, executed and deleted afterwards."

Actually there s already a directory for these programs/apps. It was made about a week ago at request of the author. Click the weblink or go here:
http://www.ticalc.org/pub/ 83plus/flash/ programs/basicbuilder/

We have yet to decide if they will continue to be included in stats.

I guess that would depend on if they uploaded the regular BASIC version as well. You don't want them getting double credit for the programs...

I know this sounds like a pretty stupid idea... but if having the APP basic programs is a problem, why have a section for them at all? Then, BASIC programmers would just include the APP version of the program in along with the zip file, so everything is 1) easier to access, and 2) only counting for one program, instead of two.

That makes sense to me, but I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons against that. Go ahead and give your input.

lol...I think that the basicbuilder folder shouldn't be part of the stats, that if the people want stats they have package the app with the original prog in the correct BASIC folder. -+=<My $0.02>=+-

Well, the beginning sound can't be represented with standard english letters, so usually either an "H" or a "Ch" is used instead.

It's either Chanukah, or Hanukkah. Note that the version that's spelled with a C has one k, rather than 2.

Aaah, faling to read the article again :-(

"This news article marks the 100,000th post in our news database."

What is even more sad is that it was the first line of the article. :-)

He pondered somewhere on this page about not using punctuation in the articles to get those who only read the first sentence to not stop at the first peroid because there would be no punctuation.

No, I just didn't understand what it meant. I thought they were writing this because somebody else got the 100,000th post. Furthermore, I didn't know that the articles counted as posts, themselves. But now it all makes sense. :)

Wow, that's incredible about 100K comments! Ay first I thought you meant 100K articles, but then I realized you meant comments...

That BASIC-->App thing is cool, but as others have noted, now the archives will be flooded with BASIc apps. Oh well.

Merry belated Christmas!
