A Pretty Perplexing Plethora of Perspicacious Programs
Posted by Nick on 22 October 1999, 00:31 GMT

A bevy of programs has been released under Ion (AGAIN!) for the 83 and 83 Plus in the past day or so by Sam Heald of Void Productions.

In no logical order:

FrAWgGuts v1.0: This game is not unlike the classic Frogger for the old Atari systems. You need to navigate a frog across a busy highway and onto a safe lilypad. You can download it for the 83 and 83 Plus.

Z-Kart 3D v1.0: This game is a port of the classic Z-Kart 3D game for the 85. Download it for the 83 and 83 Plus.

Z-Kart v1.0: This game is like Z-Kart 3D, except... uh, less 3-D :) It's featured in the screenshot above. You can snag this for the 83 and 83 Plus.

Picross v1.0: My personal favorite, this game is ported from the game by Andreas Ess. You need to form a predetermined picture in a limited amount of time using logic. 83 and 83 Plus versions exist.

Pac-Man '99 v0.5: This game is... well, Pac-Man. I don't think I need to elaborate further. 83 and 83 Plus.

Galaxian v1.0: Galaxian is a game like Space Invaders and Phoenix. Get it here for the 83 and 83 Plus.

*phew* :)

I am very proud of all of the "not wanting to insult" comments!!!!! GO TI-83+ users! I knew that you couldn't all be bad...I didn't think that I was the only one...Also, has any1 e-mailed (a nice e-mail) to ahmed or the other programmer...Sam was it (sorry for forgeting your name)? Saying what the problem is and do they have any suggestions or do they know what is wrong...So far...the only way I've kept it from crashing is not having Z-Kart 3D un-archived. I don't know if this is what you are doing...but it works for me! Thank you guys for being such a good public for the programmers!

tell me about it!, a lot of people are so desperate, they PAY me for these games.. i have made $65 cuz i am the only person who has the games and ION and i dont give people the ION install files so they cant send this to other calc's (unless they are smart enough to do a backup)

Good, now I hope every ti-83(+) user is satisfied. Now hopefully programmers can move on to other more sophisticated calculators instead of satisfying the needs of whiny ti-83+ users. I don't care if you flame me, my only point being: If you wanted to play games on your calc, you shouldn't have bought a ti-83+.

Shutup. Some people don't even know how to operate a ti 83+. Some of the higher models are not as hard to operate. Which means the ti83+ is a sophisticated calculator. Plus if you bought a calculator at all just to play games you shoulden't of. Want something portable and cheaper for games, buy a gameboy. Again shutup.

Actually, the cost of ownership is quite different beyond 4 or 5 games, and it makes much more sense to buy the calculator.

TI-graphing calculator......... .....$80-150
TI-GraphLink... ............... .........$25
games.......... ............... ..........$0
--------------- --------------- ------------
Total of 5 games $105-175
Total of 10 games $105-175
Total of 25 games $105-175

GameBoy (Original, Pocket, Color).....$40-80
games.......... ............... .......$5-35
--------------- --------------- ------------
Total of 5 games $65-255
Total of 10 games $90-430
Total of 25 games $165-955

This does _not_ take into account the quality, length, or type of the games, obviously.

Actually, there's one more thing you can factor in.

A cartridge burner and a rewritable cart. but i have no idea how much those cost. The people at Icarus would probably know though.

Vist www.bung.com.hk for info on N64 and GB products. I would hate to think that anyone would buy these to pirate gb carts, but that's really what they were designed for (just how big is the amatuer development market? "mass produced"?), so I'll mention it anyway. The 16mbit cart is big enough for any gb cart out there, and can hold multiple games.

Gameboy Color -- $ 80 (if new)
Bung XChanger -- $ 35 ($30 + some shipping)
Bung 16m Cart -- $ 50 (shipped at once)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Total cost -- $165

If you're looking to play games for free, heck, get a free SNES or Genesis emulator and play them on the computer. Or play GB games on the computer. If you buy a Gameboy, BUY the games! Authors work really hard on them, not so they can just be stolen. However, if you're looking to get into GB development, $165 is not a bad price at all. About the same as an 89 and a graph link (I bought my 86 and 89 just to program) and I dare say a lot more fun :)

Actually, you're comparing two inconsistent units. Not knowing how to use something is a measure of its ease-of-use, not its sophistication. It's also a measure of one's education on the subject. If you think the 83+ is sophisticated because many people don't know how to use it, you're dead wrong.

Just because others have a better processer and screen and a few other things does not mean it is overall better. I am basing it on how complicated it is to handle a ti-83+ and keep it from craping up. Some of those other calculators are too simple for me. I need a calculator that works more like a computer. Flash (Archive mem) = Hard Drive, Ram = Ram. Programs are much more safe on a ti 83+ than on those others that are not flash. <fake>How can us insult the ti-83+ about inferrioty with it sitting next to this monitor. Some of you should say sorry. Other calcs may be seeing this too. </fake>

<flame> (comment: please excuse the flame, but this guy deserves it) EXCUSE ME?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?!? Where do you get off saying that the TI-83+ isn't a "sophisticated" calculator? Just becuase it doesn't have all of the functions of a TI-89 (which I own) or a TI-92 (which I also own) it is still a great calculator! It is great for beginners...It has many useful functions, and it serves its purpose...Some computers don't even have that. Define "sophisticated" for me would you? Do you consider "sophisticated" a calculator that can do everything for you? Maybe that's more advanced but not more "sophisticated"! You need to stop flaming the TI-83+ users. Sure, a bunch of them messed up when they flamed Ahmed...but give them some slack! The flamers were newbies...I hope...GO WRITE YOUR OWN ARTICLE ABOUT WHY YOU THINK THAT THEY SHOULDN'T WHINE AND COMPLAIN! It doesn't belong here that's for sure...SO DON'T FLAME PEOPLE UNLESS THEY FLAMED FIRST...Just go along your merry way and shut up!

I'm sorry, my friend, but you didn't read the post as carefully as you should have. He said that the 83 *is* sophisticated, not what you thought he said. Also, consider this in light of your argument:

sophisticated adj - ahead in development; complex or intricate; "advanced technology"; "a sophisticated electronic control system" [syn: advanced] (source: WordNet 1.6 (c)1997 Princeton University)

I also own an 89, but what does that prove? Also, when using HTML tags (even fake ones), please finish them.

Today's moral: Don't flame something you haven't carefully read.

I'm sorry, I seem to have posted this in the wrong spot. I thought you were replying to Etec's reply up there, which doesn't make sense anyway. I guess the only thing you need to pay attention to is the definition of sophistication and the line after.

Programmers don't pick the platform based on what's the best calculator. They pick based on what calc they own or what calcs they are capable of programming. Like I have said about 3 times already in these posts, comments such as: "Why are people still programming for the TI-83 when the TI-89 is better?" are just so unbelievably stupid. Why would someone write programs for a calculator they don't even own? If all I had was an 83+, then any game I would make would be for the 83+.

Justin, I couldn't have said it better myself.

and on a side note, the only working calc I have is the Ti-92. I program for the 83 because it is in my opinion the easiest calc to develop for. With the 83 you have to have no outside shell (but SOS/Ashell) is a plus, and i have a ton of utilities to speed up development.

To make a game i cut and paste the header from an old file then type "zasm XXXXXXXX" (i made a zasm batch file which works with tasm and devpac83 by Hannes).
Then i right click on Virtual-TI emulator and send SOS and the file i made.

I also might like this calculator more because I started coding ASM on it 3 years ago.
