Legend of Zelda Demo v0.52.6 released
Posted on 27 January 1999, 05:46 GMT
Sam Heald has released the Legend of Zelda Demo v0.52.6 for the TI-82 (Ash), TI-83 (AShell83), and TI-86. This new version adds a shield, an octorak enemy, increased hit points for the bosses, four directional sprites for enemies, a larger overworld, and fixes numerous bugs. The level development is now being headed up by Derrick Ward. A final release should be available in mid-April.

It's a fun game. By no means as good as the original. But fun none the less.

As for the 86 version...
Not a bad demo, considering it was designed for the 82/83. Character animation seems a little "jumpy", Link seems to bounce up and down as he walks. Not animating every frame and using more than two frames of animation would improve that alot.
16x16 sprites seem a little big for such a small screen, making the game feel "cramped". The screen to screen scrolling might look better if it was slowed down, so the scrolling would be visible (probably visible on the 82/83, the 86 is probably much faster).
The effect of opening a treasure chest is very weird: the chest disapears, the object apears then disapears, then the empty chest apears.
Also, collision detection with link and game objects is a little strict compared to a Game Boy or NES game (requiring the player to be exactly in the center of a chest or a door). It might help if it were relaxed a little, possibly checking two pixels into the sprite.
These comments are coming from a player's point of view (one who has played Zelda DX heavily for the past few days on GBC emu). I am making these comments not to criticize the game, but to offer suggestions, knowing that the game is far from finished.
From a programmers view, I realize that this game was designed for the limited 82/83, and I know how many hours must have been put into this demo. I also realize that the engine was created many months ago another programmer, so the original design was not made by the current programmers. I think that, when finished, this game will be a fun version of Zelda to play.
Keep up the good work!

Relax, okay? If the author wants a TI-85 version, there will be a TI-85 version. Be assured, though, that there will eventually be a Zelda to play. Macross Software is making one in grayscale, with a lot more stuff than this game has (not to put down this game, of course).
Also, just so you know, I'm not one of those better- than- thou owners who believes that only HIS calc is important. In fact, my only calculator is a TI-85. I had an HP48g, as well, but some idiot in a maroon car ran over it... that's a long story.

The sprites are a bit too large, the Nintendo GameBoy version was more smooth and had smaller sprites.. I think that there are a lot that could be done for the finished version, but this is going well.

hehe, we have Zelda ayteee-niiiiine and yoooooooou dooooooon't. J/K this game looks ok, but Zelda 89 rules any TI grphics-based game. You say, "but it''s not finished?" Welp, still got SMQ which rocks too!!! Geez, CAS, high resolution, huge memory for the sweetest games...I'd marry my 89 if it could cook!

The ti-89 has the simplest and most user-friendly interface of any calculator i've ever used. i mean, waht calc has all that you need in a toolbar atop the screen that you can customize, a fast, not to mestion reliable, Motorola 68k processor, and nicely contoured buttons. I love my 89. I used to have an 86, which was a step in the right direction, with pop-up toolbars along the bottom of the screen and built in assembly, for only 15 bucks more than the eternally crappy and crashable 85 (god i loathe that thing).
And as for the 89's cost, save a measly 60 bucks and ask for the other hundred for christmas.
